1 Sofar di Naamà prese a dire:	1 And Zophar the Naamathite spoke out and said:
2 «A tante parole non si dovrà forse dare risposta? O il loquace dovrà avere ragione?	2 Should not the man of many words be answered, or must the garrulous man necessarily be right?
3 I tuoi sproloqui faranno tacere la gente? Ti farai beffe, senza che alcuno ti svergogni?	3 Shall your babblings keep men silent, and shall you deride and no one give rebuke?
4 Tu dici: “Pura è la mia condotta, io sono irreprensibile agli occhi tuoi”.	4 Shall you say: "My teaching is pure, and I am clean in your sight"?
5 Tuttavia, volesse Dio parlare e aprire le labbra contro di te,	5 But oh, that God would speak, and open his lips against you,
6 per manifestarti i segreti della sapienza, che sono così difficili all’intelletto, allora sapresti che Dio ti condona parte della tua colpa.	6 And tell you that the secrets of wisdom are twice as effective: So you might learn that God will make you answer for your guilt.
7 Credi tu di poter scrutare l’intimo di Dio o penetrare la perfezione dell’Onnipotente?	7 Can you penetrate the designs of God? Dare you vie with the perfection of the Almighty?
8 È più alta del cielo: che cosa puoi fare? È più profonda del regno dei morti: che cosa ne sai?	8 It is higher than the heavens; what can you do? It is deeper than the nether world; what can you know?
9 Più lunga della terra ne è la dimensione, più vasta del mare.	9 It is longer than the earth in measure, and broader than the sea.
10 Se egli assale e imprigiona e chiama in giudizio, chi glielo può impedire?	10 If he seize and imprison or call to judgment, who then can say him nay?
11 Egli conosce gli uomini fallaci; quando scorge l’iniquità, non dovrebbe tenerne conto?	11 For he knows the worthlessness of men and sees iniquity; will he then ignore it?
12 L’uomo stolto diventerà giudizioso? E un puledro di asino selvatico sarà generato uomo?	12 Will empty man then gain understanding, and the wild jackass be made docile?
13 Ora, se tu a Dio dirigerai il cuore e tenderai a lui le tue palme,	13 If you set your heart aright and stretch out your hands toward him,
14 se allontanerai l’iniquità che è nella tua mano e non farai abitare l’ingiustizia nelle tue tende,	14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,
15 allora potrai alzare il capo senza macchia, sarai saldo e non avrai timori,	15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.
16 perché dimenticherai l’affanno e te ne ricorderai come di acqua passata.	16 For then you shall forget your misery, or recall it like waters that have ebbed away.
17 Più del sole meridiano splenderà la tua vita, l’oscurità sarà per te come l’aurora.	17 Then your life shall be brighter than the noonday; its gloom shall become as the morning,
18 Avrai fiducia perché c’è speranza e, guardandoti attorno, riposerai tranquillo.	18 And you shall be secure, because there is hope; you shall look round you and lie down in safety,
19 Ti coricherai e nessuno ti metterà paura; anzi, molti cercheranno i tuoi favori.	19 and you shall take your rest with none to disturb. Many shall entreat your favor,
20 Ma gli occhi dei malvagi languiranno, ogni scampo è loro precluso, unica loro speranza è l’ultimo respiro!».	20 but the wicked, looking on, shall be consumed with envy. Escape shall be cut off from them, they shall wait to expire.
