1 Questi sono i nomi dei figliuoli d'Israele, che entrarono in Egitto con Giacobbe: ciascheduno vi andò colla sua famiglia:	1 These are the names of the sons of Israel, who went into Egypt with Jacob. They entered, each one with his house:
2 Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Giuda,	2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah,
3 Issachar, Zabulon, e Beniamin,	3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,
4 Dan, e Nephthali, Gad, e Aser.	4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.
5 Erano adunque tutte le anime di coloro, che eran nati di Giacobbe, settanta: Giuseppe poi era in Egitto.	5 Therefore, all the souls of those who went forth from Jacob’s thigh were seventy. Now Joseph was in Egypt.
6 Dopo la morte del quale, e de' fratelli di lui, e di tutta quella generazione,	6 When he had died, along with all of his brothers and all of that generation,
7 I figliuoli d'Israele crebbero, e come l'erba moltiplicarono; e rinforzatisi oltre ogni credere riempierono quella terra.	7 the sons of Israel increased, and they multiplied like seedlings. And having been strengthened exceedingly, they filled the land.
8 Si levò su frattanto un nuovo re in Egitto, il quale nulla sapea di Giuseppe:	8 Meanwhile, there arose a new king over Egypt, who was ignorant of Joseph.
9 E disse al suo popolo: Ecco che il popolo de' figliuoli d'Israele è numeroso, e ne può più di noi.	9 And he said to his people: “Behold, the people of the sons of Israel are many, and they are stronger than we are.
10 Su via, vediam d'opprimerlo con arte, affinché non si vada ingrossando; e in caso che ci sia mossa guerra, si unisca co' nostri nemici, e vinti noi, se ne vada da questo paese.	10 Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply; and if any war should advance against us, they may be added to our enemies, and having fought against us, they might depart from the land.”
11 Dette adunque ad essi de' soprastanti a' lavori, affinché questi li caricassero di pesi: ed essi fabbricarono a Faraone le città de' tabernacoli, Phithom, e Ramesses.	11 And so he set over them masters of the works, in order to afflict them with burdens. And they built for Pharaoh the cities of the tabernacles: Pithom and Raamses.
12 Ma quanto più gli opprimevano, tanto più moltiplicavano, e crescevano.	12 And the more they oppressed them, so much more did they multiply and increase.
13 E gli Egiziani aveano in odio gl'Israeliti, e aggiungevano allo strazio gl'insulti:	13 And the Egyptians hated the sons of Israel, and they afflicted them and mocked them.
14 E rendevan loro amara la vita col caricarli di faticosi lavori di terra cotta, e a far de' mattoni, e in ogni specie di servitù, onde gli angariavano ne' lavori di campagna.	14 And they led their life directly into bitterness, with hard work in clay and brick, and with all kinds of servitude, so that they were being overwhelmed with the works of the land.
15 E il re d'Egitto parlò alle levatrici degli Ebrei, delle quali l'una chiamavasi Sephora, l'altra Phua,	15 Then the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews, (one of whom one was called Shiphrah, another Puah)
16 E fece loro questo comando: Quando assisterete le donne Ebree nel tempo del parto, se sarà un maschio, uccidetelo; se una femmina, salvatela.	16 instructing them: “When you will act as a midwife to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery has arrived: if it is male, put it to death; if it is female, retain it.”
17 Ma le levatrici temettero Dio, e non obbedirono al comando del re d'Egitto; ma salvavano i maschi.	17 But the midwives feared God, and so they did not act according to the precept of the king of Egypt, but they kept the males safe.
18 E chiamatele a sé il re disse loro: Che è quello che voi avete voluto fare in salvando i bambini?	18 And summoning them, the king said, “What did you intend to do, so that you would save the boys?”
19 Risposer quelle: Non sono le donne Ebree, come l'Egiziane: perocché elle sanno aiutarsi ne' loro parti, e partoriscono prima che noi andiamo ad assisterle.	19 They responded: “The Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women. For they themselves have the wisdom of a midwife, and so they give birth before we can come to them.”
20 Dio pertanto fece del bene alle levatrici: e il popolo cresceva e diventava possente formisura.	20 Therefore, God acted favorably toward the midwives. And the people increased, and they were strengthened exceedingly.
21 E perché le levatrici temettero Dio, egli stabilì le case loro.	21 And because the midwives feared God, he built houses for them.
22 Intimò adunque Faraone a tutto il suo popolo quest'ordine: Tutti i maschi, che nasceranno, gettateli nel fiume; e serbate tutte le femmine.	22 Therefore, Pharaoh instructed all his people, saying: “Whatever will be born of the male sex, cast it into the river; whatever will be born of the female sex, retain it.”
