1 Come la neve all'estate e la pioggia al tempo della messe, così l'onore non s'addice allo stolto.	1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.
2 Come uccello che passa volando, come passerotto che va qua e là, così la maledizione non meritata non ha effetto.	2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.
3 La frusta pel cavallo, la cavezza per l'asino, il bastone sul dorso degli stolti.	3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.
4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, chè tu non abbia a diventar simile a lui.	4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.

6 Si tronca le gambe e beve iniquità chi affida messaggi ad uno stolto.	6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.
7 Come lo zoppo ha invano belle gambe, così le gravi sentenze non stan bene in bocca dello stolto.	7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Come chi getta la pietra nel mucchio di Mercurio, così fa chi onora lo stollo.	8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.
9 Come spina capitata nella mano d'un briaco, così una massima nella bocca dello stolto.	9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 La sentenza del giudice finisce le liti, e chi impone silenzio allo stolto calma gli sdegni.	10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.
11 Come cane che torna al suo vomito, così è lo stolto che ricade nella sua stoltezza.	11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.
12 Hai tu veduto un uomo che si crede sapiente? Più di lui può sperare uno stolto.	12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!
13 Dice il pigro: « C'è un leone nella via, c'è una leonessa nel cammino ».	13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'
14 Come la porta gira sui gangheri, così il pigro nel suo letto.	14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.
15 Il pigro nasconde la mano sotto l'ascella, gli par gran fatica portarla alla bocca.	15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.
16 Il pigro si crede più sapiente di sette uomini che pronunziano sentenze.	16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.
17 E' come chi piglia un cane per le orecchie colui che, passando, s'irrita e s'immischia nella lite d'un altro.	17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.

24 Il nemico si riconosce al suo parlare, quando nel cuore cova tradimenti.	24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;
25 Quando parla con voce sommessa, non te ne fidare, perchè porta nel cuore sette malizie.	25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.
26 Egli con finzione nasconde il suo odio, ma la sua malizia sarà rivelata nell'assemblea.	26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.
27 Chi scava la fossa vi cadrà, e la pietra cadrà addosso a chi la rotola.	27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.
