1 Come la neve all'estate e la pioggia al tempo della messe, così l'onore non s'addice allo stolto.	1 As snow in summer, and rain in harvest, so glory is not seemly for a fool.
2 Come uccello che passa volando, come passerotto che va qua e là, così la maledizione non meritata non ha effetto.	2 As a bird flying to other places, and a sparrow going here or there: so a curse uttered without cause shall come upon a man.
3 La frusta pel cavallo, la cavezza per l'asino, il bastone sul dorso degli stolti.	3 A whip for a horse, and a snaffle for an ass, and a rod for the back of fools.
4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, chè tu non abbia a diventar simile a lui.	4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou be made like him.
5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, perchè non si tenga saggio.	5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he imagine himself to be wise.
6 Si tronca le gambe e beve iniquità chi affida messaggi ad uno stolto.	6 He that sendeth words by a foolish messenger, is lame of feet and drinketh iniquity.
7 Come lo zoppo ha invano belle gambe, così le gravi sentenze non stan bene in bocca dello stolto.	7 As a lame man hath fair legs in vain: so a parable is unseemly in the mouth of fools.
8 Come chi getta la pietra nel mucchio di Mercurio, così fa chi onora lo stollo.	8 As he that casteth a stone into the heap of Mercury: so is he that giveth honour to a fool.
9 Come spina capitata nella mano d'un briaco, così una massima nella bocca dello stolto.	9 As if a thorn should grow in the hand of a drunkard: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.
10 La sentenza del giudice finisce le liti, e chi impone silenzio allo stolto calma gli sdegni.	10 Judgment determineth causes: and he that putteth a fool to silence, appeaseth anger.
11 Come cane che torna al suo vomito, così è lo stolto che ricade nella sua stoltezza.	11 As a dog that returneth to his vomit, so is the fool that repeateth his folly.
12 Hai tu veduto un uomo che si crede sapiente? Più di lui può sperare uno stolto.	12 Hast thou seen a man wise in his own conceit? there shall be more hope of a fool than of him.
13 Dice il pigro: « C'è un leone nella via, c'è una leonessa nel cammino ».	13 The slothful man saith: There is a lion in the way, and a lioness in the roads.
14 Come la porta gira sui gangheri, così il pigro nel suo letto.	14 As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.
15 Il pigro nasconde la mano sotto l'ascella, gli par gran fatica portarla alla bocca.	15 The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and it grieveth him to turn it to his mouth.
16 Il pigro si crede più sapiente di sette uomini che pronunziano sentenze.	16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit, than seven men that speak sentences.
17 E' come chi piglia un cane per le orecchie colui che, passando, s'irrita e s'immischia nella lite d'un altro.	17 As he that taketh a dog by the ears, so is he that passeth by in anger, and meddleth with another man's quarrel.
18 Come è reo chi scaglia saette e dardi mortali,	18 As he is guilty that shooteth arrows, and lances unto death :
19 così è colui che danneggia con frode l'amico, e, scoperto, dice: « L'ho fatto per scherzo ».	19 So is the man that hurteth his friend deceitfully: and when he is taken, saith: I did it in jest.
20 Al mancar della legna si spegne il fuoco, tolto via il sussurrone, cessan le contese.	20 When the wood faileth, the fire shall go out: and when the talebearer is taken away, contentions shall cease.
21 Come i carboni dàn la brace e le legna il fuoco, così l'iracondo accende le risse.	21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire, so an angry man stirreth up strife.
22 Le parole del sussurrone sembran semplici, ma penetrano nell'intimo delle viscere.	22 The words of a talebearer are as it were simple, but they reach to the innermost parts of the belly.
23 Come scoria d'argento a vernice di vaso di terra cotta, così le labbra gonfie unite a cuore malvagio.	23 Swelling lips joined with a corrupt heart, are like an earthen vessel adorned with silver dross.
24 Il nemico si riconosce al suo parlare, quando nel cuore cova tradimenti.	24 An enemy is known by his lips, when in his heart he entertaineth deceit.
25 Quando parla con voce sommessa, non te ne fidare, perchè porta nel cuore sette malizie.	25 When he shall speak low, trust him not: because there are seven mischiefs in his heart.
26 Egli con finzione nasconde il suo odio, ma la sua malizia sarà rivelata nell'assemblea.	26 He that covereth hatred deceitfully, his malice shall be laid open in the public assembly.
27 Chi scava la fossa vi cadrà, e la pietra cadrà addosso a chi la rotola.	27 He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return to him.
28 La lingua ingannatrice non ama la verità, la bocca che adula è causa di rovine.	28 A deceitful tongue loveth not truth: and a slippery mouth worketh ruin.
