1 Allora Giobbe, presa la parola, disse;	1 Then Job said in reply:
2 « Ascoltate, ve ne prego, le mie parole, e mutate sentimenti.	2 At least listen to my words, and let that be the consolation you offer.
3 Permettetemi di parlare, e quando avrò detto, se vi parrà, ridete pure delle mie parole.	3 Bear with me while I speak; and after I have spoken, you can mock!
4 E' forse contro un uomo la mia disputa, chè io non abbia ragione di rattristarmi?	4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?
5 Guardatemi, e, allibiti, ponete il dito alla vostra bocca.	5 Look at me and be astonished, put your hands over your mouths.
6 Io al sol pensarci son preso dallo spavento, un tremito agita la mia carne.	6 When I think of it, I am dismayed, and horror takes hold on my flesh.
7 Come mai vivono gli empi, e sono innalzati e resi potenti dalle ricchezze?	7 Why do the wicked survive, grow old, become mighty in power?
8 Una prospera progenie li circonda, una turba di parenti e di nipoti sta alla loro presenza.	8 Their progeny is secure in their sight; they see before them their kinsfolk and their offspring.
9 Le loro case son tranquille e al sicuro, e la verga di Dio non li tocca.	9 Their homes are safe and without fear, nor is the scourge of God upon them.
10 I loro bovi fan concepire senza aborti, le loro vacche mettono alla luce e non va loro a male un parto.	10 Their bulls gender without fail; their cows calve and do not miscarry.
11 I loro fanciulli escon fuori come greggi, i loro ragazzi saltano e si divertono.	11 These folk have infants numerous as lambs, and their children dance.
12 Portano in mano il tamburo e la cetra, si rallegrano al suon degli strumenti.	12 They sing to the timbrel and harp, and make merry to the sound of the flute.
13 passano nella felicità i loro giorni, e in un momento scendono nel sepolcro.	13 They live out their days in prosperity, and tranquilly go down to the nether world.
14 Essi, che dissero a Dio: Allontanati da noi: non vogliamo saperne delle tue vie.	14 Yet they say to God, "Depart from us, for we have no wish to learn your ways!
15 Chi è l'Onnipotente che dobbiamo servirlo? Che guadagneremo a pregarlo?	15 What is the Almighty that we should serve him? And what gain shall we have if we pray to him?"
16 Ma siccome i loro beni non sono in loro mano, lungi da me il consiglio degli empi.	16 If their happiness is not in their own hands and if the counsel of the wicked is repulsive to God,
17 Quante volte si spegnerà la lucerna degli empi, e piomberà sopra di essi la rovina, e (Dio) nell'ira sua distribuirà loro i dolori?	17 How often is the lamp of the wicked put out? How often does destruction come upon them, the portion he allots in his anger?
18 Saran come paglia al vento, come cenere che il turbine disperde.	18 Let them be like straw before the wind, and like chaff which the storm snatches away!
19 Dio serberà ai figli i castighi del padre. Invece egli dovrebbe imparare dal castigo,	19 May God not store up the man's misery for his children; let him requite the man himself so that he feels it,
20 Ì suoi occhi dovrebbero veder la sua rovina, egli dovrebbe bere il furore dell'Ònnipotente.	20 Let his own eyes see the calamity, and the wrath of the Almighty let him drink!
21 Che gl'importa infatti della sua casa dopo di lui, quand'anche il numero dei suoi mesi fosse dimezzato?	21 For what interest has he in his family after him, when the number of his months is finished?
22 Chi pretenderà d'insegnare la scienza a Dio, il quale giudica i celesti?	22 Can anyone teach God knowledge, seeing that he judges those on high?
23 Uno muore robusto e sano, e ricco e felice;	23 One dies in his full vigor, wholly at ease and content;
24 le sue viscere son piene di grasso, le sue ossa sono irrigate di midollo.	24 His figure is full and nourished, and his bones are rich in marrow.
25 Un'altro invece muore coll'amarezza nell'anima, senza beni di fortuna.	25 Another dies in bitterness of soul, having never tasted happiness.
26 Eppure giaceranno ugualmente nella polvere, e i vermi li copriranno.	26 Alike they lie down in the dust, and worms cover them both.
27 Io però conosco bene i vostri pensieri, i giudizi iniqui che mi opponete,	27 Behold, I know your thoughts, and the arguments you rehearse against me.
28 infatti voi dite: Dov'è la casa del principe? Dove sono le tende degli empi?	28 For you say, "Where is the house of the magnate, and where the dwelling place of the wicked?"
29 Domandatene a chiunque volete dei viaggiatori, e sentirete che egli sa bene queste cose:	29 Have you not asked the wayfarers and do you not recognize their monuments?
30 che l'empio è riservato pel giorno della vendetta, e sarà condotto al giorno del furore.	30 Nay, the evil man is spared calamity when it comes;
31 Chi gli rimprovererà in faccia il suo modo di agire? Chi gli renderà quanto si merita?	31 Who will charge him with his conduct to his face, and for what he has done who will repay him?
32 Egli sarà condotto al sepolcro, e veglierà, tra la turba dei morti:	32 and on the day he is carried to the grave
33 gradito alla ghiaia del Cocito, trascinerà dietro a, sè tutti gli uomini e davanti a sè una turba innumerevole.	33 Sweet to him are the clods of the valley, and over him the funeral mound keeps watch, While all the line of mankind follows him, and the countless others who have gone before.
34 A che state a darmi vane consolazioni se è chiaro che la vostra risposta, ripugna alla verità? »	34 How then can you offer me vain comfort, while in your answers perfidy remains?
