Siracide 21

BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN
1 Figliuolo, hai peccato? Non tornare a peccare, e per i [peccati] di prima prega che ti sian rimessi.	1 Son, have you sinned? You should not add further sins. Then too, for your former sins, pray so that they may be forgiven you.
2 Fuggi dal peccato, come dalla faccia d'un serpente; se ti accosterai, ti morderà.	2 Flee from sins, as if from the face of a serpent. For if you approach them, they will take hold of you.
3 Denti di leone sono i tuoi denti, che tolgon la vita agli uomini.	3 Their teeth are like the teeth of a lion, bringing death to the souls of men.
4 Quasi spada a due tagli è ogni iniquità: alla sua ferita non c'è rimedio.	4 All iniquity is like a two-edged spear; there is no healing in its wound.
5 L'insolenza e l'ingiuria possono annientare una fortuna, e la casa più ricca sarà annientata dalla superbia: cosi la fortuna del superbo sarà sradicata.	5 Reproach and injury will make resources useless. And a house that is exceedingly wealthy will become powerless through pride. In this way, the resources of the arrogant will be eradicated.
6 La preghiera del povero [sale], dalla bocca [di costui], sino al suo orecchio, e il giudizio lo colpirà presto.	6 Supplications from the mouth of the pauper will reach all the way to the ears of God, and judgment will come to him quickly.
7 Chi odia la corruzione, {va] sulle orme del peccatore; e chi teme Dio, si convertirà in cuor suo.	7 Whoever hates correction is walking in the steps of a sinner. But whoever fears God will convert within his heart.
8 Si conosce da lontano il potente per l'audacia della lingua, e l'uomo sensato sa sfuggirgli.	8 He who has power by means of a bold tongue will be known from far away. But an understanding man knows to slip past him.
9 Chi fabbrica la sua casa a spese d'altri, è come chi raccoglie le sue pietre per l'inverno.	9 Whoever builds his house, paid for by another, is like one who gathers his building stones in winter.
10 Una massa di stoppa è la truppa degli empi, e la loro fine una fiammata di fuoco.	10 The synagogue of sinners is like stubble piled up; for the end of them both is a burning fire.
11 La strada de' peccatori è lastricata di pietre, e al suo termine c'è [la fossa del] l'averno, le tenebre e i tormenti.	11 The way of sinners is paved and level, and at their end is hell and darkness and punishments.
12 Chi osserva la giustizia, tiene a freno il proprio spirito,	12 Whoever observes justice will obtain an understanding of it.
13 e la perfezione del timor di Dio è la sapienza e il senno.	13 The consummation of the fear of God is wisdom and understanding.
14 Non acquisterà sapere chi non è prudente nel bene;	14 One who is not wise in goodness will not accept instruction.
15 ma v'è una prudenza che abbonda nel male, e non v'ha senno là dove c'è l'amarezza.	15 Now there is a wisdom which abounds in evil. But there is no understanding where there is bitterness.
16 il sapere del savio cresce come un'inondazione, e il suo consiglio rimane come una fonte di vita.	16 The knowledge of the wise will increase like a flood, and his counsel will continue like a fountain of life.
17 cuore dello stolto è come un vaso fesso, e non può ritenere nessun sapere.	17 The heart of the foolish is like a broken vessel, for it will not hold any wisdom.
18 Qualunque parola saggia che ascolti l'uomo intelligente, la loda e la fa sua; l'ascolta un libertino, e gli dispiace, e se la gitta dietro le spalle.	18 A knowledgeable man will praise any wise word he hears, and he will apply it to himself. The self-indulgent man has heard it, and it displeases him, and so he casts it behind his back.
19 Il racconto dello stolto è come un fardello per via; ma sulle labbra dell'uomo sensato si trova la grazia.	19 The talk of the foolish is like a burden on a journey. But in the lips of the understanding, grace will be found.
20 La bocca del prudente è ricercata nell'assemblea, e sulle sue parole rifletton [tutti] in cuor loro.	20 The mouth of the prudent is sought in the Church, and they will consider his words in their hearts.
21 Come una casa diroccata, così è la sapienza per lo stolto, e la scienza dell'insipiente son parole inintelligibili.	21 Like a house which has been demolished, so is wisdom to the foolish. And the knowledge of the unwise is like meaningless words.
22 [Quasi] ceppi a' piedi è l'istruzione per gli sciocchi, e quasi manette alla mano destra.	22 Doctrine to the senseless is like fetters on the feet, and like chains on the right hand.
23 Lo stolto, ridendo, alza la voce; ma l'uomo prudente sorride appena pian piano.	23 A foolish man lifts up his voice in laughter. But a wise man will not even laugh quietly to himself.
24 [Com'] un ornamento d'oro è l'istruzione per l'uomo prudente, e come un braccialetto al braccio destro.	24 Doctrine is to the prudent like a gold ornament, and like an armband on the right arm.
25 Il piede dello stolto è pronto [a entrar] in casa d'altri, ma l'uomo sperimentato si perita in faccia al potente.	25 The feet of the foolish step easily into his neighbor’s house. But an experienced man will be apprehensive in the presence of the powerful.
26 L'insensato spia dalla finestra nella casa, ma l'uomo educato se ne sta fuori.	26 A senseless man will gaze through a window into the house. But a man who has been well-taught will stand outside.
27 È maleducazione da parte d'uno l'origliare alla porta, e il prudente sdegnerà [tale] infamia.	27 It is foolish for a man to listen through the door. And a prudent man will be grieved at this disgrace.
28 Le labbra degl'imprudenti buttan fuori sciocchezze, ma le parole de' prudenti saran pesate con la bilancia.	28 The lips of the imprudent will describe senseless things. But the words of the prudent will be weighed on a balance.
29 In bocca degli stolti è il cuore loro, e nel cuore de' savi la loro bocca.	29 The hearts of the foolish are in their mouths. But the mouths of the wise are with their hearts.
30 Quando l'empio maledice il diavolo, maledice l'anima sua.	30 Whenever the impious curse the devil, they curse their own soul.
31 Il mormoratore contamina se stesso, e si rende odioso a tutti. E chi si ferma con lui, sarà odiato; ma l'uomo che sa tacere e ha senno, sarà onorato.	31 Those who whisper accusations defile their own souls, and they will be hated by all. And whoever abides with them will be hateful. The silent and understanding man will be honored.
