| 1 - Chiama pur, se c'è chi ti risponda, e rivolgiti a qualcuno dei santi. | 1 "Call now; is there any one who will answer you? To which of the holy ones will you turn? |
| 2 Però lo stolto lo uccide la rabbia e al dissennato dà morte l'invidia. | 2 Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple. |
| 3 Io ben vidi lo stolto [quale albero] con sode radici, ma imputridì la sua prosperità ad un tratto. | 3 I have seen the fool taking root, but suddenly I cursed his dwelling. |
| 4 Lungi da salvezza finiranno i suoi figli, oppressi saranno sulla porta senza che alcun li salvi. | 4 His sons are far from safety, they are crushed in the gate, and there is no one to deliver them. |
| 5 La sua mèsse la divorerà l'affamato, un armato rapirà via lui, gente assetata succhierà le sue ricchezze. | 5 His harvest the hungry eat, and he takes it even out of thorns; and the thirsty pant after his wealth. |
| 6 Non avviene nulla in terra senza cagione, e dal suolo non germoglia l'affanno: | 6 For affliction does not come from the dust, nor does trouble sprout from the ground; |
| 7 l'uomo nasce al travaglio, come l'uccello per il volo. | 7 but man is born to trouble as the sparks fly upward. |
| 8 Io quindi, [fossi in te], pregherei il Signore, e innanzi a Dio proporrei la mia causa: | 8 "As for me, I would seek God, and to God would I commit my cause; |
| 9 egli opera cose grandi e imperscrutabili, cose mirabili che non hanno numero; | 9 who does great things and unsearchable, marvelous things without number: |
| 10 manda egli la pioggia sulla superficie della terraed irriga con le acque ogni cosa; | 10 he gives rain upon the earth and sends waters upon the fields; |
| 11 egli mette in alto tutti gli umiliati, e gli afflitti eleva in salvezza; | 11 he sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety. |
| 12 egli dissipa i pensieri dei maligni, sì che le lor mani non compiano ciò che cominciarono; | 12 He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so that their hands achieve no success. |
| 13 comprende egli i sapienti nella loro accortezza, e disperde il disegno dei malvagi: | 13 He takes the wise in their own craftiness; and the schemes of the wily are brought to a quick end. |
| 14 di giorno incappano essi nelle tenebre, e come di notte brancolano a mezzodì. | 14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and grope at noonday as in the night. |
| 15 Egli quindi salverà il misero dalla spada della lor bocca, e il poverello dalla mano del violento: | 15 But he saves the fatherless from their mouth, the needy from the hand of the mighty. |
| 16 sì che v'abbia per l'infelice una speranza, e l'iniquità chiuda la sua bocca. | 16 So the poor have hope, and injustice shuts her mouth. |
| 17 Beato l'uomo che da Dio è corretto: la riprensione del Signore tu dunque non spregiare! | 17 "Behold, happy is the man whom God reproves; therefore despise not the chastening of the Almighty. |
| 18 Poichè egli ferisce e pur medica, percuote e pur le sue mani guariscono. | 18 For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands heal. |
| 19 In sei angustie egli ti salverà, e nella settima non ti toccherà il male: | 19 He will deliver you from six troubles; in seven there shall no evil touch you. |
| 20 nella fame ti libererà dalla morte, e nella mischia dal poter della spada; | 20 In famine he will redeem you from death, and in war from the power of the sword. |
| 21 dal flagello della lingua [calunniatrice] sarai celato, nè temerai della calamità se venga; | 21 You shall be hid from the scourge of the tongue, and shall not fear destruction when it comes. |
| 22 della desolazione e carestia ti farai beffe, delle fiere della terra non avrai paura; | 22 At destruction and famine you shall laugh, and shall not fear the beasts of the earth. |
| 23 pur dalle pietre dei campi tu trarrai vantaggio, e le fiere della terra saranno in pace con te. | 23 For you shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the beasts of the field shall be at peace with you. |
| 24 Proverai che la tua tenda gode di pace, e visitando la tua dimora non troverai mancanza. | 24 You shall know that your tent is safe, and you shall inspect your fold and miss nothing. |
| 25 Proverai pure che la tua prole s'accresce, e la tua progenie sarà come l'erba della terra. | 25 You shall know also that your descendants shall be many, and your offspring as the grass of the earth. |
| 26 Giungerai in decrepitezza alla tombacome racchiudesi la bica del grano a suo tempo. | 26 You shall come to your grave in ripe old age, as a shock of grain comes up to the threshing floor in its season. |
| 27 Ecco, la cosa sta come abbiamo investigato; su ciò che hai ascoltato tu rifletti.» | 27 Lo, this we have searched out; it is true. Hear, and know it for your good." |
