1 O morte, quanto è amaro il ricordarti per un uomo che trova la pace nelle sue ricchezze,	1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.
2 per un uomo tranquillo, fortunato in tutto e ancora capace di gustare il cibo!	2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.
3 O morte, il tuo decreto è buono pel meschino a cui diminuiscono le forze,	3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.
4 e che è spossato dall'età, pieno di cure, senza speranza e senza pazienza.	4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.
5 Non temere il decreto della morte: ricordati di quello che è stato avanti di te e pensa a quello che verrà dopo: questo è il decreto emanato dal Signore sopra tutti i viventi.	5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.
6 E che ti verrà aggiunto oltre il beneplacito dell'Altissimo, sian dieci o cento o mille i tuoi anni?	6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.
7 Nell'altro mondo non si guarda a quanto uno ha vissuto.	7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.
8 I figli dei peccatori diventan figli d'abominazione, e così pure quelli che frequentano le case degli empi.	8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.
9 L'eredità dei figli dei peccatori va in perdizione, e l'obbrobrio accompagnerà sempre i loro posteri.	9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.
10 I figli dell'empio si lamentano del loro padre, perchè per colpa di lui vivono nell'ignominia.	10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.
11 Guai a voi, uomini empi, che avete abbandonata la legge del Signore Altissimo!	11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.
12 Quando nascerete, nascerete nella maledizione, e quando ,morirete, la maledizione sarà il vostro avere.	12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;
13 Tutto quello che vien dalla terra tornerà alla terra: così gli empi dalla maledizione andranno alla perdizione.	13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.
14 Gli uomini fan lutto sopra i loro cadaveri, ma il nome degli empi sarà cancellato.	14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:
15 Abbi cura del tuo buon nome, perchè sarà tuo più lungamente che mille tesori preziosi e immensi.	15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;
16 I giorni della buona vita hanno un numero, ma il buon nome dura eternamente.	16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;
17 Figlioli, conservate in pace le istruzioni, perchè la sapienza nascosta è un tesoro ignoto. A che giovano l'una e l'altro?	17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.
18 E' migliore l'uomo che nasconde la sua stoltezza, dell'uomo che nasconde la sua sapienza.	18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;
19 Or voi vergognatevi delle cose che vi dirò;	19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,
20 perchè non è bene arrossire d'ogni cosa, non tutte le cose sono approvate da tutti con verità.	20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;
21 Vergognatevi della fornicazione davanti al padre e alla madre, della menzogna davanti al governatore e al potente;	21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;
22 del delitto dinanzi al principe e al giudice, dell'iniquità davanti all'assemblea e al popolo;	22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;
23 Nell'ingiustizia dinanzi al compagno a all'amico; e, dinanzi alla gente del luogo ove abiti,	23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--
24 Nel furto, della verità di Dio, dell'alleanza, di mettere il gomito sul pane, d'imbrogli nel dare e nel ricevere,	24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.
25 di non rispondere a chi saluta, di gettar gli occhi su donna pubblica, di non guardare in viso un parente.
26 Non volgere altrove la faccia per non vedere il tuo prossimo. (Vergognati) di togliere ad uno la sua parte e di non restituire.
27 Non guardare la donna d'altri, non ne tentare la serva, non ti accostare al suo letto.
28 (Vergognati) di parole offensive cogli amici, e, quando hai fatto un dono, non lo rinfacciare.
