BIBBIA TINTORI	DOUAI-RHEIMS
1 Figlio mio, ritieni le mie parole, e fa tesoro dei miei precetti.	1 My son, keep my words, and lay up my precepts with thee. Son,
2 Figlio, osserva i miei precetti e vivrai, custodisci la mia legge come la pupilla, del tuo occhio,	2 Keep my commandments, and thou shalt live: and my law as the apple of thy eye:
3 legatela alle dita, scrivila sulle tavole del tuo cuore.	3 Bind it upon thy fingers, write it upon the tables of thy heart.
4 Di' alla sapienza: « Tu sei mia sorella » e chiama tua amica la prudenza,	4 Say to wisdom: Thou art my sister: and call prudence thy friend,
5 affinchè essa ti preservi dalla donna estranea, dalla forestiera che usa parole melate.	5 That she may keep thee from the woman that is not thine, and from the stranger who sweeteneth her words.
6 Dalla finestra della mia casa io guardavo attraverso le persiane,	6 For I look out of the window of my house through the lattice,
7 e vedo dei ragazzi, e noto un giovane insensato	7 And I see little ones, I behold a foolish young man,
8 che passa per la piazza rasente all'angolo e passeggia per la via davanti alla casa di lei,	8 Who passeth through the street by the corner, and goeth nigh the way of her house.
9 sul crepuscolo, al declinar del giorno, nelle tenebre della notte, nel buio.	9 In the dark, when it grows late, in the darkness and obscurity of the night,
10 Ed ecco ad incontrarlo una donna in abbigliamento da meretrice, pronta a rapire anime, ciarliera, girellona,	10 And behold a woman meeteth him in harlot's attire prepared to deceive souls; talkative and wandering,
11 incapace di star ferma e di tenere i piedi in casa.	11 Not bearing to be quiet, not able to abide still at home,
12 Ora per le strade, ora per le piazze, ora alle cantonate tende insidie.	12 Now abroad, now in the streets, now lying in wait near the corners.
13 Abbracciato il giovane, lo bacia, sfacciatamente lo accarezza e gli dice:	13 And catching the young man, she kisseth him, and with an impudent face, flattereth, saying:
14 «Avevo fatto voto d'un sacrifizio di ringraziamento, oggi ho sciolto il mio voto,	14 I vowed victims for prosperity, this day I have paid my vows.
15 per questo ti son venuta incontro, desiderosa di vederti, e t'ho trovato.	15 Therefore I am come out to meet thee, desirous to see thee, and I have found thee.
16 Ho steso sulle corde il mio letto, vi ho messo sopra screziate coperte d'Egitto.	16 I have woven my bed with cords, I have covered it with painted tapestry, brought from Egypt.
17 Ho profumata la mia camera con mirra, aloe e cinnamomo.	17 I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
18 Vieni, inebriamoci di amore, godiamo i desiderati amplessi finché non apparisca il giorno;	18 Come, let us be inebriated with the breasts, and let us enjoy the desired embraces, till the day appear.
19 giacchè il marito non è in casa sua, e partito per lunghissimo viaggio,	19 For my husband is not at home, he is gone a very long journey.
20 aa preso seco un sacchetto di danaro, non tornerà che a luna piena ».	20 He took with him a bag of money: he mill return home the day of the full moon.
21 Colle molte parole lo tira nella rete, colle lusinghe delle labbra lo trascina.	21 She entangled him with many words, and drew him away with the flattery of her lips.
22 Egli subito la segue come un bue condotto al macello, come agnello che scherza e non sa, lo stolto, che è menato alla catena,	22 Immediately he followeth her as an ox led to be a victim, and as a lamb playing the wanton, and not knowing that he is drawn like a fool to bonds,
23 finchè una freccia non gli squarci il fegato: come un uccello si precipita sul laccio, senza riflettere che si tratta del pericolo della vita.	23 Till the arrow pierce his liver: as if a bird should make haste to the snare, and knoweth not that his life is in danger.
24 Or dunque, figlio mio, ascoltami, stai attento alle parole della mia bocca:	24 Now therefore, my son, hear me, and attend to the words of my mouth.
25 Il tuo cuore non si lasci trascinare nelle vie di lei, non ti smarrire nei suoi sentieri;	25 Let not thy mind be drawn away in her ways: neither be thou deceived with her paths.
26 Che molti ne ha fatti cadere trafitti, ed anche i più forti furon da lei uccisi.	26 For she hath cast down many wounded, and the strongest have been slain by her.
27 La sua casa è la via dell'inferno, e discende negli abissi della morte.	27 Her house is the way to hell, reaching even to the inner chambers of death.
