BIBBIA TINTORI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Giobbe rispose, con dire:	1 Job spoke next. He said:
2 « Anche ora le mie parole son piene d'amarezza; e la mano che mi piaga è più grave dei miei gemiti.	2 My lament is stil rebellious; despite my groans, his hand is just as heavy.
3 Oh! sapessi come trovarlo, come giungere fino al suo trono!	3 Wil no one help me to know how to travel to his dwel ing?
4 Esporrei dinanzi a lui la mia causa ed avrei piena di querela la mia bocca.	4 I should set out my case to him, advancing any number of grievances.
5 E vorrei sapere che potrebbe oppormi, e capire quel che avrebbe da dirmi.	5 Then I could learn his defence, every word of it, taking note of everything he said to me.
6 Ma non vorrei che Egli contendesse meco colla sua gran potenza, e mi schiacciasse sotto il peso della sua grandezza.	6 Would he put al his strength into this debate with me? No, he would only have to give his attention tome,
7 Proponga contro di me l'equità, e la mia causa otterrà vittoria.	7 to recognise his opponent as upright and so I should win my case for ever.
8 Ma se io vo' verso l'oriente, Egli non comparisce, se vado verso l'occidente non lo vedo.	8 If I go to the east, he is not there; or to the west, I stil cannot see him.
9 Se a sinistra, che devo fare, non trovandolo? Se a destra, non lo vedrò.	9 If I seek him in the north, he is not to be found, invisible as ever, if I turn to the south.
10 Ma Egli conosce la mia condotta, Egli m'ha provato come l'oro attraverso il fuoco,	10 And yet he knows every step I take! Let him test me in the crucible: I shall come out pure gold.
11 il mio piede ha seguite le sue orme; sono stato sempre nella sua vìa, senza allontanarmi da essa,	11 My footsteps have fol owed close in his, I have walked in his way without swerving;
12 non mi sono allontanato dai precetti delle sue labbra, ed ho riposte nel mio cuore le parole della sua bocca.	12 I have not neglected the commandment of his lips, in my heart I have cherished the words of hismouth.
13 Ma Egli solo è, e nessuno può turbare i suoi disegni. Egli ha fatto ciò che ha voluto.	13 But once he has made up his mind, who can change it? Whatever he plans, that he carries out.
14 Quando Egli avrà compita su di me la sua volontà, avrà ancora gran numero di simili mezzi a sua disposizione.	14 No doubt, then, but he wil carry out my sentence, like so many other decrees that he has made.
15 Per questo io mi turbo alla sua presenza, e quando penso a lui son preso dallo spavento.	15 That is why I am ful of fear before him, and the more I think, the greater grows my dread of him.
16 Dio mi strugge il cuore, l'Onnipotente mi spaventa.	16 God has undermined my courage, Shaddai has filled me with fear.
17 Ma io non perisco per tenebre che mi opprimano, e la caligine non ha coperta la mia faccia ».	17 The darkness having failed to destroy me, I am plunged back into obscurity by him!
