| 1 - Poichè molti han tentato di ordinare un racconto dei fatti che si sono compiuti tra noi, | 1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things which have been accomplished among us, |
| 2 secondo che ce li hanno trasmessi quelli che fin da principio ne furono testimoni oculari e ministri della parola, | 2 just as they were delivered to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, |
| 3 è parso anche a me, dopo aver fin dall'origine investigato diligentemente ogni cosa, di scrivertene, con ordine, eccellentissimo Teofilo, | 3 it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, |
| 4 affinchè tu riconosca la certezza delle cose che ti son state insegnate. | 4 that you may know the truth concerning the things of which you have been informed. |
| 5 Al tempo di Erode, re della Giudea, c'era un sacerdote, di nome Zaccaria, della classe di Abia, la cui moglie era delle figliuole di Aronne, e si chiamava Elisabetta. | 5 In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. |
| 6 Ambedue erano giusti nel cospetto di Dio, camminando in modo irreprensibile in tutti i comandamenti e precetti del Signore. | 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. |
| 7 Essi non avevano figliuoli, perchè Elisabetta era sterile, e ambedue eran molto avanti in età. | 7 But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and both were advanced in years. |
| 8 Ora, mentre Zaccaria esercitava davanti al Signore le sue funzioni sacerdotali secondo il turno della sua classe, | 8 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, |
| 9 gli toccò in sorte, secondo il costume seguìto dai sacerdoti, di entrare nel santuario del Signore per offrirvi l'incenso. | 9 according to the custom of the priesthood, it fell to him by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. |
| 10 Mentre tutta la moltitudine del popolo stava di fuori in preghiera nell'ora dell'incenso, | 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. |
| 11 gli apparve un angelo del Signore, ritto alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso. | 11 And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. |
| 12 Zaccaria, al vederlo, fu turbato e preso da spavento. | 12 And Zechariah was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. |
| 13 Ma l'angelo gli disse: «Non temere, Zaccaria, perchè la tua preghiera è stata esaudita e tua moglie Elisabetta ti darà un figliuolo, al quale metterai nome Giovanni. | 13 But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer is heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. |
| 14 Egli sarà per te un motivo di gioia e di allegrezza, e molti gioiranno per la nascita di lui, | 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth; |
| 15 perchè egli sarà grande nel cospetto del Signore. Non berrà nè vino nè bevanda inebriante, e sarà pieno di Spirito Santo fin dal seno di sua madre. | 15 for he will be great before the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. |
| 16 Convertirà molti figliuoli d'Israele al Signore loro Dio, | 16 And he will turn many of the sons of Israel to the Lord their God, |
| 17 e camminerà davanti a Lui con lo spirito e la potenza di Elia, per ricondurre il cuore dei padri verso i figli e i ribelli alla saggezza dei giusti per preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto». | 17 and he will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared." |
| 18 Zaccaria disse all'angelo: «Donde conoscerò io questo? Poichè io sono vecchio e mia moglie è molto attempata». | 18 And Zechariah said to the angel, "How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is advanced in years." |
| 19 L'angelo gli rispose: «Io sono Gabriele, che sto dinanzi a Dio e fui mandato a parlarti e a recarti questa buona notizia. | 19 And the angel answered him, "I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. |
| 20 Ed ecco che tu sarai muto e non potrai parlare fino al giorno in cui queste cose avverranno, perchè non hai creduto alle mie parole che si adempiranno a loro tempo». | 20 And behold, you will be silent and unable to speak until the day that these things come to pass, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their time." |
| 21 Il popolo intanto stava aspettando Zaccaria e si meravigliava del suo indugiarsi nel santuario. | 21 And the people were waiting for Zechariah, and they wondered at his delay in the temple. |
| 22 Ma quando uscì, egli non poteva parlar loro; sicchè essi compresero che aveva avuto una visione nel santuario; egli faceva loro dei segni e rimase muto. | 22 And when he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple; and he made signs to them and remained dumb. |
| 23 Terminato il tempo del suo servizio, se n'andò a casa sua. | 23 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home. |
| 24 Alcun tempo dopo Elisabetta, sua moglie, si trovò incinta e si tenne nascosta per cinque mesi, dicendo: | 24 After these days his wife Elizabeth conceived, and for five months she hid herself, saying, |
| 25 «Così ha fatto con me il Signore, il giorno in cui mi ha guardato per togliere la mia ignominia in mezzo agli uomini». | 25 "Thus the Lord has done to me in the days when he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men." |
| 26 Ora, al sesto mese, l'angelo Gabriele, fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea, chiamata Nazaret, | 26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, |
| 27 a una vergine fidanzata ad un uomo della casa di David, di nome Giuseppe e il nome della vergine era Maria. | 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. |
| 28 L'angelo, entrato da lei, disse: «Ti saluto, piena di grazia; il Signore è con te! Tu sei benedetta tra le donne». | 28 And he came to her and said, "Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!" |
| 29 Maria, avendo udito ciò, fu turbata alle sue parole e si domandava cosa potesse significare quel saluto. | 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. |
| 30 L'angelo soggiunse: «Non temere, Maria, perchè tu hai trovato grazia presso Dio; | 30 And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. |
| 31 ecco, tu concepirai nel tuo seno e darai alla luce un figliuolo, a cui porrai nome Gesù. | 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. |
| 32 Questi sarà grande e sarà chiamato Figliuolo dell'Altissimo; il Signore Iddio gli darà il trono di David, suo padre, ed egli regnerà in eterno sulla casa di Giacobbe | 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, |
| 33 e il suo regno non avrà mai fine». | 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." |
| 34 Allora Maria disse all'angelo: «Come avverrà questo, se io non conosco uomo?». | 34 And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" |
| 35 L'angelo le rispose: «Lo Spirito Santo discenderà in te e la potenza dell'Altissimo ti coprirà con la sua ombra e perciò il santo che nascerà da te sarà chiamato Figlio di Dio. | 35 And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. |
| 36 Ed ecco Elisabetta, tua parente, ha concepito anche lei un figliuolo nella sua vecchiaia, ed ella, che era chiamata sterile, è già nel sesto mese, | 36 And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. |
| 37 perchè nulla è impossibile a Dio». | 37 For with God nothing will be impossible." |
| 38 E Maria disse: «Ecco l'ancella del Signore; si faccia di me secondo la tua parola». E l'angelo si partì da lei. | 38 And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. |
| 39 In quei giorni Maria si pose in viaggio, e andò in fretta in una regione montuosa, in una città di Giuda. | 39 In those days Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a city of Judah, |
| 40 Entrata in casa di Zaccaria salutò Elisabetta. | 40 and she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. |
| 41 Ed avvenne che appena Elisabetta udì il saluto di Maria, il bambino le balzò nel seno ed Elisabetta fu ripiena di Spirito Santo | 41 And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit |
| 42 e ad alta voce esclamò: «Benedetta tu sei tra le donne e benedetto il frutto del tuo seno. | 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! |
| 43 E in grazia di che mi è concesso che la madre del mio Signore venga a me? | 43 And why is this granted me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? |
| 44 Infatti appena il suono del tuo saluto mi è giunto agli orecchi, il bambino m'è balzato per giubilo nel seno. | 44 For behold, when the voice of your greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leaped for joy. |
| 45 Te beata, che hai creduto; perchè si compiranno le cose dette a te dal Signore». | 45 And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her from the Lord." |
| 46 E Maria disse:«L'anima mia magnifica il Signore, | 46 And Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord, |
| 47 e il mio spirito esulta in Dio, mio Salvatore; | 47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, |
| 48 perchè egli ha rivolto i suoi sguardi sulla bassezza della sua ancella, e così da questo momento tutte le generazioni mi chiameran beata; | 48 for he has regarded the low estate of his handmaiden. For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed; |
| 49 perchè gran cose ha fatto in me Colui che è potente e il cui nome è santo, | 49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name. |
| 50 e la cui misericordia si estende di generazione in generazione su coloro che lo temono. | 50 And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. |
| 51 Egli ha operato potentemente col suo braccio; ha disperso coloro che s'inorgoglivano nei pensieri del loro cuore; | 51 He has shown strength with his arm, he has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts, |
| 52 ha rovesciato dal loro trono i potenti ed ha esaltato gli umili; | 52 he has put down the mighty from their thrones, and exalted those of low degree; |
| 53 ha ricolmato di beni gli affamati e rimandato vuoti i ricchi. | 53 he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent empty away. |
| 54 Si è preso cura d'Israele, suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia, | 54 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy, |
| 55 come parlò ai padri nostri, ad Abramo e ai suoi discendenti per i secoli». | 55 as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his posterity for ever." |
| 56 Maria rimase con Elisabetta circa tre mesi, e poi se ne tornò a casa. | 56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her home. |
| 57 Compiutosi per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire, diede alla luce un figliuolo. | 57 Now the time came for Elizabeth to be delivered, and she gave birth to a son. |
| 58 I vicini e i parenti, avendo udito che il Signore aveva manifestato la sua gran misericordia verso lei, se ne congratulavano. | 58 And her neighbors and kinsfolk heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her. |
| 59 Nell'ottavo giorno vennero a circoncidere il bambino e lo chiamarono Zaccaria dal nome di suo padre. | 59 And on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they would have named him Zechariah after his father, |
| 60 Ma la madre di lui disse: «No, invece avrà nome Giovanni». | 60 but his mother said, "Not so; he shall be called John." |
| 61 Le replicarono: «Non c'è nessuno nel tuo parentado che porti questo nome». | 61 And they said to her, "None of your kindred is called by this name." |
| 62 E facevano cenni al padre per sapere come fosse chiamato. | 62 And they made signs to his father, inquiring what he would have him called. |
| 63 Ed egli, chiesta una tavoletta, vi scrisse: «Il suo nome è Giovanni». E tutti restarono meravigliati. | 63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, "His name is John." And they all marveled. |
| 64 In quel momento si aprì la bocca di Zaccaria e la sua lingua si sciolse ed egli parlava e benediceva il Signore. | 64 And immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue loosed, and he spoke, blessing God. |
| 65 Tutti i loro vicini furono presi da sbigottimento e dovunque per tutte le montagne di Giudea, si parlava di queste cose. | 65 And fear came on all their neighbors. And all these things were talked about through all the hill country of Judea; |
| 66 Quanti le udivano, le conservavano in cuore e dicevano: «Che bambino sarà mai questo?». Perchè la mano del Signore era con lui. | 66 and all who heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, "What then will this child be?" For the hand of the Lord was with him. |
| 67 Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ripieno di Spirito Santo e profetò così: | 67 And his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, |
| 68 «Benedetto sia il Signore, Dio d'Israele, perchè ha visitato e redento il suo popolo; | 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people, |
| 69 ha suscitato per noi il corno di salvezza nella casa di David, suo servo, | 69 and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David, |
| 70 come aveva annunziato per bocca dei suoi santi, dei suoi profeti, fin dai tempi antichi; | 70 as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, |
| 71 salvezza dai nostri nemici e dalle mani di quanti ci odiano; | 71 that we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; |
| 72 per esercitare la sua misericordia verso i nostri padri, e ricordarsi della sua santa alleanza: | 72 to perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant, |
| 73 giuramento che fece ad Abramo, padre nostro, di concederci | 73 the oath which he swore to our father Abraham, |
| 74 che senza timore, liberati dalle mani dei nostri nemici, lo servissimo | 74 to grant us that we, being delivered from the hand of our enemies, might serve him without fear, |
| 75 con santità e con giustizia innanzi a Lui, per tutti i giorni di nostra vita. | 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. |
| 76 E tu, o bambino, sarai chiamato profeta dell'Altissimo, perchè tu camminerai davanti alla faccia del Signore, per preparargli le vie | 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, |
| 77 ed insegnare al suo popolo a riconoscere la salute nella remissione dei loro peccati; | 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people in the forgiveness of their sins, |
| 78 per le viscere di misericordia del nostro Dio, in virtù della quale ci ha visitati il Sole sorgente dall'alto, | 78 through the tender mercy of our God, when the day shall dawn upon us from on high |
| 79 per illuminare chi giace nelle tenebre e nell'ombra di morte, per guidare i nostri passi nella via della pace». | 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." |
| 80 E il bambino cresceva e si fortificava in ispirito; e stava nei deserti fino al giorno in cui doveva manifestarsi a Israele. | 80 And the child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the wilderness till the day of his manifestation to Israel. |
