1 Certo, per l'argento vi sono miniere e per l'oro luoghi dove esso si raffina.	1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.
2 Il ferro si cava dal suolo e la pietra fusa libera il rame.	2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.
3 L'uomo pone un termine alle tenebre e fruga fino all'estremo limite le rocce nel buio più fondo.	3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.
4 Forano pozzi lungi dall'abitato coloro che perdono l'uso dei piedi: pendono sospesi lontano dalla gente e vacillano.	4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.
5 Una terra, da cui si trae pane, di sotto è sconvolta come dal fuoco.	5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.
6 Le sue pietre contengono zaffiri e oro la sua polvere.	6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.
7 L'uccello rapace ne ignora il sentiero, non lo scorge neppure l'occhio dell'aquila,	7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;
8 non battuto da bestie feroci, né mai attraversato dal leopardo.	8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.
9 Contro la selce l'uomo porta la mano, sconvolge le montagne:	9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.
10 nelle rocce scava gallerie e su quanto è prezioso posa l'occhio:	10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.
11 scandaglia il fondo dei fiumi e quel che vi è nascosto porta alla luce.	11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.
12 Ma la sapienza da dove si trae? E il luogo dell'intelligenza dov'è?	12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
13 L'uomo non ne conosce la via, essa non si trova sulla terra dei viventi.	13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.
14 L'abisso dice: "Non è in me!" e il mare dice: "Neppure presso di me!".	14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.
15 Non si scambia con l'oro più scelto, né per comprarla si pesa l'argento.	15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,
16 Non si acquista con l'oro di Ofir, con il prezioso berillo o con lo zaffiro.	16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.
17 Non la pareggia l'oro e il cristallo, né si permuta con vasi di oro puro.	17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,
