1 Elifaz il Temanita prese a dire:	1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:
2 Può forse l'uomo giovare a Dio, se il saggio giova solo a se stesso?	2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?
3 Quale interesse ne viene all'Onnipotente che tu sia giusto o che vantaggio ha, se tieni una condotta integra?	3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?
4 Forse per la tua pietà ti punisce e ti convoca in giudizio?	4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?
5 O non piuttosto per la tua grande malvagità e per le tue iniquità senza limite?	5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!
6 Senza motivo infatti hai angariato i tuoi fratelli e delle vesti hai spogliato gli ignudi.	6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,
7 Non hai dato da bere all'assetato e all'affamato hai rifiutato il pane,	7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;
8 la terra l'ha il prepotente e vi abita il tuo favorito.	8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,
9 Le vedove hai rimandato a mani vuote e le braccia degli orfani hai rotto.	9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.
10 Ecco perché d'intorno a te ci sono lacci e un improvviso spavento ti sorprende.	10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;
11 Tenebra è la tua luce e più non vedi e la piena delle acque ti sommerge.	11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.
12 Ma Dio non è nell'alto dei cieli? Guarda il vertice delle stelle: quanto sono alte!	12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?
13 E tu dici: "Che cosa sa Dio? Può giudicare attraverso la caligine?	13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?
14 Le nubi gli fanno velo e non vede e sulla volta dei cieli passeggia".	14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'
15 Vuoi tu seguire il sentiero d'un tempo, già battuto da uomini empi,	15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,
16 che prima del tempo furono portati via, quando un fiume si era riversato sulle loro fondamenta?	16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,
17 Dicevano a Dio: "Allontànati da noi! Che cosa ci può fare l'Onnipotente?".	17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'
18 Eppure egli aveva riempito le loro case di beni, anche se i propositi degli empi erano lontani da lui.	18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!
19 I giusti ora vedono e ne godono e l'innocente si beffa di loro:	19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:
20 "Sì, certo è stata annientata la loro fortuna e il fuoco ne ha divorati gli avanzi!".	20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'
21 Su, riconcìliati con lui e tornerai felice, ne riceverai un gran vantaggio.	21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.
22 Accogli la legge dalla sua bocca e poni le sue parole nel tuo cuore.	22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.
23 Se ti rivolgerai all'Onnipotente con umiltà, se allontanerai l'iniquità dalla tua tenda,	23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,
24 se stimerai come polvere l'oro e come ciottoli dei fiumi l'oro di Ofir,	24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,
25 allora sarà l'Onnipotente il tuo oro e sarà per te argento a mucchi.	25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.
26 Allora sì, nell'Onnipotente ti delizierai e alzerai a Dio la tua faccia.	26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.
27 Lo supplicherai ed egli t'esaudirà e tu scioglierai i tuoi voti.	27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.
28 Deciderai una cosa e ti riuscirà e sul tuo cammino splenderà la luce.	28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;
29 Egli umilia l'alterigia del superbo, ma soccorre chi ha gli occhi bassi.	29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.
30 Egli libera l'innocente; tu sarai liberato per la purezza delle tue mani.	30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.
