| 2 Beato l’uomo, la cui anima non lo biasima e la cui speranza non è caduta! | 2 Blessed is anyone whose conscience brings no reproach and who has never given up hope. |
| 3 AI cuore angusto non convengono le ricchezze; per l’uomo dall’occhio cattivo non conviene l’oro. | 3 Wealth is not the right thing for the niggardly, and what use are possessions to the covetous? |
| 4 Chi lo nega a se stesso raccoglie per altri; estranei si godranno i suoi beni. | 4 Whoever hoards by stinting himself is hoarding for others, and others wil live sumptuously on hisriches. |
| 5 Con chi sarà buono chi è cattivo con sè? Certo costui non si allieterà dei suoi beni. | 5 If someone is mean to himself, whom does he benefit? he does not even enjoy what is his own. |
| 6 Non c’è nessuno che sia peggiore di chi è cattivo con sè: in lui è la punizione della sua malizia. | 6 No one is meaner than the person who is mean to himself, this is how his wickedness repays him. |
| 7 Se farà del bene, lo farà ignorando e mostrerà infine la sua malvagità, | 7 If he does any good, he does it unintentional y, and in the end he himself reveals his wickedness. |
| 8 È cattivo l’uomo dall’occhio invido: volge altrove la faccia e considera la vita un nulla. | 8 Wicked the person who has an envious eye, averting his face, and careless of others' lives. |
| 9 All’occhio dell’ingordo la porzione è piccola; fa sua la parte dell’amico e perde la propria. | 9 The eye of the grasping is not content with what he has, greed shrivels up the soul. |
| 10 L’occhio cattivo guarda con invidia il pane; ma c’è disagio sulla sua mensa. | 10 The miser is grudging of bread, there is famine at his table. |
| 11 Figlio mio, benefica te stesso, se possiedi qualcosa, sia generosa la tua mano verso Dio. | 11 My child, treat yourself as wel as you can afford, and bring worthy offerings to the Lord. |
| 12 Ricordati che la morte non tarda e che il decreto dello Sheol non ti viene manifestato. | 12 Remember that death wil not delay, and that you have never seen Sheol's contract. |
| 13 Prima di morire, benefica l’amico; da’ a lui ciò che ti trovi in mano. | 13 Be kind to your friend before you die, treat him as generously as you can afford. |
| 14 Non privarti di una buona giornata; non perderti una sola parte di onesto desiderio. | 14 Do not refuse yourself the good things of today, do not let your share of what is lawfully desired passyou by. |
| 15 Non lascerai forse agli altri quanto possiedi e le tue fatiche al sorteggio? | 15 Wil you not have to leave your fortune to another, and the fruit of your labour to be divided by lot? |
| 16 Da’, ricevi e godine; perchè, nello Sheol, non si ricerca il piacere, | 16 Give and receive, enjoy yourself -- there are no pleasures to be found in Sheol. |
| 17 Ogni esistenza si logora come un indumento; c’è un decreto eterno: « Si deve morire». | 17 Like clothes, every body wil wear out, the age -- old law is, 'Everyone must die.' |
| 18 Come delle foglie che spuntano su un albero frondoso una cade e una nasce; così delle generazioni della carne e del sangue una muore e una nasce. | 18 Like foliage growing on a bushy tree, some leaves fal ing, others growing, so are the generations offlesh and blood: one dies, another is born. |
| 19 Tutte le opere dell’uomo giungono alla consunzione; ma le opere delle sue mani vanno con lui. | 19 Every achievement rots away and perishes, and with it goes its author. |
| 20 Beato l’uomo che pensa alla sapienza ed è tutto rivolto a intendere; | 20 Blessed is anyone who meditates on wisdom, and reasons with intelligence, |
| 21 che ha disposto il suo cuore per le vie di essa e ne scruta i passi; | 21 who studies her ways in his heart, and ponders her secrets. |
| 22 che la segue come uno che cerca e ne spia gli accessi; | 22 He pursues her like a hunter, and lies in wait by her path; |
| 23 che si protende per le sue finestre e origlia ai suoi usci; | 23 he peeps in at her windows, and listens at her doors; |
| 24 che si accampa intorno alla casa di lei e pianta il chiodo alla sua parete; | 24 he lodges close to her house, and fixes his peg in her wal s; |
| 25 che fissa vicino la propria tenda e vi dimora come un buon abitante; | 25 he pitches his tent at her side, and lodges in an excel ent lodging; |
| 26 che pone il proprio nido tra le sue foglie e dimora fra i suoi rami; | 26 he sets his children in her shade, and camps beneath her branches; |
| 27 che sotto la sua ombra cerca un rifugio alla calura e abita nelle sue dimore: | 27 he is sheltered by her from the heat, and in her glory he makes his home. |
