1 Non riportare discorsi sentiti, rivelando il segreto: così non avrai da arrossire e troverai grazia nel cospetto di tutti gli uomini. Non ti vergognare di tutte quest'altre cose, e il rispetto umano non ti faccia peccare.	1 But of these things be not ashamed, lest you sin through human respect:
2 Della legge dell'Altissimo, dell'alleanza, della giustizia che assolve l'empio,	2 Of the law of the Most High and his precepts, or of the sentence to be passed upon the sinful;
3 nei conti coi soci e i viandanti, della divisione dell'eredità tra gli amici,	3 Of sharing the expenses of a business or a journey, or of dividing an inheritance or property;
4 della bilancia e della stadera giusta, del guadagno, molto o poco che sia,	4 Of accuracy of scales and balances, or of tested measures and weights;
5 (di impedire) la corruzione del mercato e dei mercanti, di correggere molto i figlioli, e far sanguinare i fianchi al servo scellerato.	5 Of acquiring much or little, or of bargaining in dealing with a merchant; Of constant training of children, or of beating the sides of a disloyal servant;
6 E' bene mettere il sigillo sopra una donna cattiva.	6 Of a seal to keep an erring wife at home, or of a lock placed where there are many hands;
7 Dove son molte mani, chiudi; e ciò che dài contalo e pesalo, inoltre ciò che dài e ciò che ricevi scrivilo tutto.	7 Of numbering every deposit, or of recording all that is given or received;
8 (Non ti vergognare) di correggere l'insensato, lo stolto, nè dei vecchi condannati dai giovani; così tu sarai saggio in tutto e lo dato davanti a tutti i viventi.	8 Of chastisement of the silly and the foolish, or of the aged and infirm answering for wanton conduct. Thus you will be truly cautious and recognized by all men as discreet.
9 La figlia è l'occulta ansia del padre, e toglie il sonno il timore che essa invecchi ragazza o sia presa in odio da maritata.	9 A daughter is a treasure that keeps her father wakeful, and worry over her drives away rest: Lest she pass her prime unmarried, or when she is married, lest she be disliked;
10 o che sia contaminata nella sua verginità, o che si trovi incinta nella casa paterna, o che sia infedele col marito o per lo meno rimanga sterile.	10 While unmarried, lest she be seduced, or, as a wife, lest she prove unfaithful; Lest she conceive in her father's home, or be sterile in that of her husband.
11 Fai stretta guardia a figlia lussuriosa, chè non ti faccia divenire oggetto di scherno pei tuoi nemici, la favola della città, il ludibrio della plebe, e ti copra di confusione nell'assemblea del popolo.	11 Keep a close watch on your daughter, lest she make you the sport of your enemies, A byword in the city, a reproach among the people, an object of derision in public gatherings. See that there is no lattice in her room, no place that overlooks the approaches to the house.
12 Non guardare alla bellezza di nessun uomo e non ti trattenere in mezzo alle donne.	12 Let her not parade her charms before men, or spend her time with married women;
13 Perchè dalle vesti vien la tignola e dalla donna l'iniquità dell'uomo.	13 For just as moths come from garments, so harm to women comes from women:
14 E' meglio il male da un uomo che i benefìzi da una donna, da una donna che porta vergogna e ignominia.	14 Better a man's harshness than a woman's indulgence, and a frightened daughter than any disgrace.
15 Or rammenterò le opere del Signore, e pubblicherò quello che ho veduto. Per la parola del Signore esistono le sue opere.	15 Now will I recall God's works; what I have seen, I will describe. At God's word were his works brought into being; they do his will as he has ordained for them.
16 Il lucente sole contempla tutto, l'opera del Signore è piena della sua gloria.	16 As the rising sun is clear to all, so the glory of the LORD fills all his works;
17 Non ha forse il Signore dato ai santi di annunziare tutte le sue maraviglie che il Signore onnipotente ha confermate perchè reggano nella sua gloria?	17 Yet even God's holy ones must fail in recounting the wonders of the LORD, Though God has given these, his hosts, the strength to stand firm before his glory.
18 Egli scruta l'abisso e il cuore dell'uomo e conosce i loro segreti accorgimenti;	18 He plumbs the depths and penetrates the heart; their innermost being he understands. The Most High possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are to come:
19 Egli conosce tutto lo scibile e vede i segni del tempo, annunzia le cose passate e quelle future e scopre le tracce delle cose nascoste.	19 He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the deepest secrets.
20 Nessun pensiero gli sfugge, nessuna parola gli resta nascosta.	20 No understanding does he lack; no single thing escapes him.
21 Egli ha decorate le maraviglie della sua sapienza. Egli è prima dei secoli e per tutti i secoli, e nulla s'è aggiunto a lui,	21 Perennial is his almighty wisdom; he is from all eternity one and the same,
22 e nulla gli manca, e non ha bisogno del consiglio di nessuno.	22 With nothing added, nothing taken away; no need of a counselor for him!
23 Quanto son belle le sue opere! E' come scintilla quello che si può considerare.	23 How beautiful are all his works! even to the spark and the fleeting vision!
24 Tutte queste cose vivono e durano nei secoli e tutte in ogni occorrenza obbediscono a lui.	24 The universe lives and abides forever; to meet each need, each creature is preserved.
25 Tutte sono a coppia, l'una di fronte all'altra: Egli non ha fatto nulla di difettoso.	25 All of them differ, one from another, yet none of them has he made in vain, For each in turn, as it comes, is good; can one ever see enough of their splendor?
26 Egli assicura il bene di ciascuna. Chi può saziarsi di mirarne la gloria?
