1 Gran travaglio è stato creato per tutti gli uomini, un giogo pesante opprime i figli d'Adamo dal giorno in cui escono dal seno della loro madre fino a che non sono sepolti nel seno della madre comune:	1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,
2 sopraccapi, timori del cuore, preoccupazioni per l'avvenire e il giorno in cui si finisce.	2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--
3 Da chi siede sopra glorioso trono a chi giace sulla polvere e sul la cenere,	3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,
4 da chi veste di giacinto e porta corona a chi si ricopre di rozza tela di lino, furori, gelosie, tumulti, agitazioni, timori di morte, collere ostinate e contese.	4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--
5 Ed anche quando è tempo di riposare nel letto, il sonno della notte perturba l'imaginazione.	5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.
6 Riposa poco o nulla, ed anche nel sonno è come nel giorno in cui è di sentinella.	6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;
7 E' turbato dalle visioni del suo spirito e, come chi fugge nel giorno della battaglia, si sveglia quando è in salvo, e si maraviglia del suo vano timore.	7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.
8 Così va per ogni vivente, dall'uomo alla bestia, e sette volte peggio per i peccatori.	8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.
9 S'aggiunga la morte, il sangue, le contese, la spada, le oppressioni, la fame, le rovine, i flagelli.	9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:
10 Tutte queste cose furon fatte contro gli iniqui, e per essi venne il diluvio.	10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.
11 Tutto quello che vien dalla terra torna alla terra, come tutte le acque ritornano al mare.	11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.
12 Ogni dono ed ogni ingiustizia perirà, ma la fedeltà sussisterà in eterno.	12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.
13 I beni degli empi seccheranno come torrente, faran fracasso come gran tuono durante la pioggia.	13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,
14 Ci sarà gioia nell'aprir la mano, così i prevaricatori periranno per sempre.	14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.
15 I rampolli degli empi non moltiplicheranno i loro rami, e le radici immonde fan rumore sulla cima d'un masso.	15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;
16 Come erba verde lungo ogni acqua, e sul margine del fiume, è strappata avanti ogni altra erba.	16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;
17 La benignità è come giardino benedetto, e la misericordia dura in eterno.	17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.
18 La vita dell'operaio contento di sua sorte sarà dolce, e in essa troverai un tesoro.	18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.
19 I figli e il fondare una città assicurano un nome, ma sarà stimata sopra queste cose una moglie senza macchia.	19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;
20 Il vino e la musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più di tutte e due l'amore della sapienza.	20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.
21 Il flauto e l'arpa dànno soavi melodie, ma più melodiosa di loro è la lingua soave.	21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.
22 Il tuo occhio desidererà la grazia e la bellezza, ma più di queste cose i verdeggianti seminati.	22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.
23 L'amico e il compagno nell'occasione sono di aiuto, ma supera l'uno e l'altro la moglie unita al marito.	23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.
24 I fratelli vengono in soccorso nel tempo della sventura, ma più di loro salverà la misericordia.	24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.
25 L'oro e l'argento fanno star bene in piedi, ma più di tutti e due un buon consiglio.	25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.
26 La ricchezza e la forza esaltano il cuore, ma più di queste cose il timor di Dio.	26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:
27 Nel timor di Dio non manca nulla, e con esso non c'è bisogno di cercare aiuto.	27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.
28 Il timore del Signore è come giardino benedetto, or nato di magnificenza senza pari.	28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;
29 Figlio, nel tempo della tua vita non ti ridurre all'elemosina; meglio morire che mendicare.	29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:
30 L'uomo che guarda all'altrui mensa non impiega la sua vita a pensare al vitto e si nutrisce di viveri altrui.	30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.
31 Ma l'uomo educa to e saggio si guarderà da questo.
32 Alla bocca dello stolto sarà dolce il chiedere l'elemosina, ma nel ventre di lui arderà il fuoco.
