1 Grandi pene sono destinate a ogni uomo e un giogo pesante sta sui figli di Adamo, dal giorno della loro uscita dal grembo materno fino al giorno del ritorno alla madre di tutti.	1 A great anxiety has God allotted, and a heavy yoke, to the sons of men; From the day one leaves his mother's womb to the day he returns to the mother of all the living,
2 Il pensiero dell’attesa e il giorno della fine provocano le loro riflessioni e il timore del cuore.	2 His thoughts, the fear in his heart, and his troubled forebodings till the day he dies--
3 Da chi siede su un trono glorioso fino a chi è umiliato su terra e su cenere,	3 Whether he sits on a lofty throne or grovels in dust and ashes,
4 da chi indossa porpora e corona fino a chi è ricoperto di panno grossolano,	4 Whether he bears a splendid crown or is wrapped in the coarsest of cloaks--
5 non c’è che sdegno, invidia, spavento, agitazione, paura della morte, contese e liti. Anche durante il riposo nel letto il sogno notturno turba i suoi pensieri:	5 Are of wrath and envy, trouble and dread, terror of death, fury and strife. Even when he lies on his bed to rest, his cares at night disturb his sleep.
6 per un poco, come niente, sta nel riposo e subito nel sonno si affatica come di giorno, è sconvolto dalla visione del suo cuore, come chi è scampato da una battaglia.	6 So short is his rest it seems like none, till in his dreams he struggles as he did by day, Terrified by what his mind's eye sees, like a fugitive being pursued;
7 Al momento di mettersi in salvo si sveglia, meravigliandosi dell’irreale timore.	7 As he reaches safety, he wakes up astonished that there was nothing to fear.
8 Così è per ogni essere vivente, dall’uomo alla bestia, ma per i peccatori sette volte tanto:	8 So it is with all flesh, with man and with beast, but for sinners seven times more.
9 morte, sangue, contese, spada, disgrazie, fame, calamità, flagelli.	9 Plague and bloodshed, wrath and the sword, plunder and ruin, famine and death:
10 Questi mali sono stati creati per gli empi, per loro causa venne anche il diluvio.	10 For the wicked, these were created evil, and it is they who bring on destruction.
11 Tutto quello che proviene dalla terra alla terra ritorna, quanto viene dalle acque rifluisce nel mare.	11 All that is of earth returns to earth, and what is from above returns above.
12 Ogni corruzione e ogni ingiustizia sparirà, ma la fedeltà resterà per sempre.	12 All that comes from bribes or injustice will be wiped out, but loyalty remains for ages.
13 Le ricchezze degli ingiusti si prosciugheranno come un torrente, si disperderanno come tuono che echeggia durante l’uragano.	13 Wealth out of wickedness is like a wadi in spate: like a mighty stream with lightning and thunder,
14 Se gli ingiusti dovranno alzare le mani, ci si rallegrerà, così i trasgressori cadranno in rovina.	14 Which, in its rising, rolls along the stones, but suddenly, once and for all, comes to an end.
15 La stirpe degli empi non moltiplica i suoi rami, le radici impure sono sopra una pietra dura.	15 The offshoot of violence will not flourish, for the root of the godless is on sheer rock;
16 Il giunco su ogni corso d’acqua o sugli argini di un fiume viene tagliato prima di ogni altra erba.	16 Or they are like reeds on the riverbank, withered before all other plants;
17 Un atto di bontà è come un giardino di benedizioni, l’elemosina dura per sempre.	17 But goodness will never be cut off, and justice endures forever. Wealth or wages can make life sweet, but better than either is finding a treasure.
18 La vita di chi basta a se stesso e del lavoratore è dolce, ma più ancora lo è per chi trova un tesoro.	18 A child or a city will preserve one's name, but better than either, attaining wisdom.
19 I figli e la fondazione di una città consolidano un nome, ma più ancora è apprezzata una donna irreprensibile.	19 Sheepfolds and orchards bring flourishing health; but better than either, a devoted wife;
20 Vino e musica rallegrano il cuore, ma più ancora l’amore della sapienza.	20 Wine and music delight the soul, but better than either, conjugal love.
21 Il flauto e l’arpa rendono piacevole il canto, ma più ancora una voce soave.	21 The flute and the harp offer sweet melody, but better than either, a voice that is true.
22 L’occhio desidera grazia e bellezza, ma più ancora il verde dei campi.	22 Charm and beauty delight the eye, but better than either, the flowers of the field.
23 Il compagno e l’amico s’incontrano a tempo opportuno, ma più ancora moglie e marito.	23 A friend, a neighbor, are timely guides, but better than either, a prudent wife.
24 Fratelli e soccorritori aiutano nella tribolazione, ma più ancora l’elemosina.	24 A brother, a helper, for times of stress; but better than either, charity that rescues.
25 Oro e argento rendono sicuro il piede, ma più ancora è stimato un consiglio.	25 Gold and silver make one's way secure, but better than either, sound judgment.
26 Ricchezze e potenza sollevano il cuore, ma più ancora il timore del Signore. Con il timore del Signore non manca nulla, con esso non c’è bisogno di cercare un altro aiuto.	26 Wealth and vigor build up confidence, but better than either, fear of God. Fear of the LORD leaves nothing wanting; he who has it need seek no other support:
27 Il timore del Signore è come un giardino di benedizioni e protegge più di qualsiasi gloria.	27 The fear of God is a paradise of blessings; its canopy, all that is glorious.
28 Figlio, non vivere una vita da mendicante: è meglio morire piuttosto che mendicare.	28 My son, live not the life of a beggar, better to die than to beg;
29 Un uomo che guarda alla tavola altrui ha una vita che non si può chiamare tale; si contaminerà con cibi estranei, l’uomo sapiente ed educato se ne guarderà.	29 When one has to look to another's table, his life is not really a life. His neighbor's delicacies bring revulsion of spirit to one who understands inward feelings:
30 Il mendicare è dolce nella bocca dello sfrontato, ma dentro di lui c’è un fuoco che brucia.	30 In the mouth of the shameless man begging is sweet, but within him it burns like fire.
