1 C’è un rimprovero che è fuori tempo, c’è chi tace ed è prudente.	1 How much better is it to reprove, than to become angry, so as not to hinder him who may confess in prayer.
2 Quanto è meglio rimproverare che covare l’ira!	2 The lust of an eunuch will deflower a young maiden;
3 Chi si confessa colpevole evita l’umiliazione.	3 similar is he who by violence gives an iniquitous judgment.
4 Come un eunuco che vuol deflorare una ragazza, così chi vuole fare giustizia con la violenza.	4 How good it is, when you are corrected, to show contrition! For in this way, you will escape deliberate sin.
5 C’è chi tace ed è ritenuto saggio, e chi è riprovato per la troppa loquacità.	5 There is one who, by remaining silent, is found to be wise. And there is another who is hateful and who provokes by speaking out.
6 C’è chi tace, perché non sa che cosa rispondere, e c’è chi tace, perché conosce il momento opportuno.	6 There is one who, not having the understanding to speak, remains silent. And there is another who remains silent, knowing the proper time.
7 L’uomo saggio sta zitto fino al momento opportuno, il millantatore e lo stolto non ne tengono conto.	7 A wise man will remain silent until the proper time. But an unrestrained and imprudent person will not heed the times.
8 Chi esagera nel parlare si renderà riprovevole, chi vuole imporsi a tutti i costi sarà detestato. Com’è bello quando chi è biasimato mostra pentimento, perché così tu sfuggirai a un peccato volontario.	8 Whoever uses many words will wound his own soul. And whoever unjustly takes authority upon himself will be hated.
9 Nelle disgrazie qualcuno può trovare un vantaggio, ma c’è un profitto che si può cambiare in perdita.	9 There is advancement in evil for an undisciplined man, and there is a plan which turns to his detriment.
10 C’è una generosità che non ti arreca vantaggi e c’è una generosità che rende il doppio.	10 There is a gift which is not helpful, and there is a gift, the repayment for which is double.
11 C’è un’umiliazione che viene dalla gloria e c’è chi dall’abbattimento alza la testa.	11 There is a loss for the sake of boasting, and there is one who will lift up his head from lowliness.
12 C’è chi compra molte cose con poco e chi le paga sette volte il loro valore.	12 There is one who buys much for a small price, and who pays it back sevenfold.
13 Il saggio si rende amabile con le sue parole, ma le cortesie degli stolti sono sciupate.	13 Anyone wise in words makes himself loved. But the graces of the foolish will be poured away.
14 Il dono di uno stolto non ti giova, e ugualmente quello dell’invidioso, perché è frutto di costrizione; i suoi occhi, infatti, sono molti invece di uno.	14 A gift from the unwise will not benefit you. For his gaze is divided, sevenfold.
15 Egli dà poco, ma rinfaccia molto; apre la sua bocca come un banditore. Oggi fa un prestito e domani lo richiede; quanto è odioso un uomo del genere!	15 He will give little, and reproach much. And the opening of his mouth is like a burning flame.
16 Lo stolto dice: «Non ho un amico, non c’è gratitudine al bene che faccio». Quelli che mangiano il suo pane sono lingue cattive.	16 There is one who lends today and demands repayment tomorrow. A man such as this is hateful.
17 Quanti si burleranno di lui, e quante volte! Poiché non accoglie l’avere con spirito retto, e il non avere gli è ugualmente indifferente.	17 A foolish man will not have a friend, and there will be no thanks for his good deeds.
18 Meglio inciampare sul pavimento che con la lingua; è così che la caduta dei cattivi giunge rapida.	18 For those who eat his bread have a false tongue. How often and how many are those who will ridicule him!
19 Un discorso inopportuno è come un racconto inopportuno: è sempre sulla bocca dei maleducati.	19 For what he possesses, he does not distribute with correct understanding. And he acts similarly with what he does not possess.
20 Non si accetta un proverbio dalla bocca dello stolto, perché non lo dice mai a proposito.	20 The slip of a false tongue is like someone who falls upon pavement. Such a fall for the wicked will arrive quickly.
21 C’è chi è trattenuto dal peccare a causa della miseria e quando riposa non avrà rimorsi.	21 A disagreeable man is like a pointless fable; it will be continually in the mouth of the undisciplined.
22 C’è chi si rovina per rispetto umano e di fronte a uno stolto si dà perduto.	22 A parable from the mouth of a fool will be rejected. For he does not speak it at the proper time.
23 C’è chi per rispetto umano fa promesse a un amico, e in tal modo gratuitamente se lo rende nemico.	23 There is one who is prevented from sinning by poverty, and in his rest, he will be vexed.
24 Brutta macchia nell’uomo la menzogna, è sempre sulla bocca dei maldicenti.	24 There is one who will lose his own soul because of pretense, and he will lose it by an example of imprudence. For by seeking the approval of another, he will destroy himself.
25 Meglio un ladro che un mentitore abituale, tutti e due avranno in sorte la rovina.	25 There is one who, for the sake of what other’s think, makes a promise to a friend, and so he gains him as an enemy for no reason.
26 L’abitudine del bugiardo è un disonore, la vergogna che si merita è sempre con lui.	26 A lie is a wicked disgrace to a man, and yet lies will be continually in the mouths of those without discipline.
27 Chi è saggio nel parlare si apre una strada e l’uomo prudente piace ai grandi.	27 A thief is better than a man who constantly lies. But both of them will inherit perdition.
28 Chi lavora la terra accresce il suo raccolto, chi piace ai grandi si fa perdonare i suoi torti.	28 The habits of lying men are without honor. And their shame is with them without ceasing.
29 Regali e doni accecano gli occhi dei saggi, come bavaglio sulla bocca soffocano i rimproveri.	29 A wise man will benefit himself by his own words, and a prudent man will please the powerful.
30 Sapienza nascosta e tesoro invisibile: a che servono l’una e l’altro?	30 Whoever works his land will raise high a stockpile of grain. And whoever works justice will himself be raised high. Yet truly, whoever pleases the powerful will escape unfair treatment.
31 Meglio l’uomo che nasconde la sua stoltezza di quello che nasconde la sua sapienza.	31 Presents and gifts blind the eyes of judges, and silence their mouths, turning them aside from their task of correction.
32 È meglio perseverare nella ricerca del Signore che essere un libero auriga della propria vita.	32 Wisdom hidden, and treasure unseen: of what use is either of these?
	33 He who hides his foolishness is better than a man who conceals his wisdom.
