1 Elifaz il Temanita prese la parola e disse:	1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:
2 Se si tenta di parlarti, ti sarà forse gravoso? Ma chi può trattenere il discorso?	2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?
3 Ecco, tu hai istruito molti e a mani fiacche hai ridato vigore;	3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.
4 le tue parole hanno sorretto chi vacillava e le ginocchia che si piegavano hai rafforzato.	4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.
5 Ma ora questo accade a te e ti abbatti; capita a te e ne sei sconvolto.	5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.
6 La tua pietà non era forse la tua fiducia e la tua condotta integra, la tua speranza?	6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?
7 Ricordalo: quale innocente è mai perito e quando mai furon distrutti gli uomini retti?	7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?
8 Per quanto io ho visto, chi coltiva iniquità, chi semina affanni, li raccoglie.	8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.
9 A un soffio di Dio periscono e dallo sfogo della sua ira sono annientati.	9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.
10 Il ruggito del leone e l'urlo del leopardo e i denti dei leoncelli sono frantumati.	10 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;
11 Il leone è perito per mancanza di preda e i figli della leonessa sono stati dispersi.	11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
12 A me fu recata, furtiva, una parola e il mio orecchio ne percepì il lieve sussurro.	12 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.
13 Nei fantasmi, tra visioni notturne, quando grava sugli uomini il sonno,	13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
14 terrore mi prese e spavento e tutte le ossa mi fece tremare;	14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.
15 un vento mi passò sulla faccia, e il pelo si drizzò sulla mia carne...	15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.
16 Stava là ritto uno, di cui non riconobbi l'aspetto, un fantasma stava davanti ai miei occhi... Un sussurro..., e una voce mi si fece sentire:	16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:
17 "Può il mortale essere giusto davanti a Dio o innocente l'uomo davanti al suo creatore?	17 "Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?
18 Ecco, dei suoi servi egli non si fida e ai suoi angeli imputa difetti;	18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.
19 quanto più a chi abita case di fango, che nella polvere hanno il loro fondamento! Come tarlo sono schiacciati,	19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!
20 annientati fra il mattino e la sera: senza che nessuno ci badi, periscono per sempre.	20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.
21 La funicella della loro tenda non viene forse strappata? Muoiono senza saggezza!".	21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom."
