1 Sai tu quando figliano le camozze e assisti al parto delle cerve?	1 Do you know when mountain goats give birth? Have you ever watched deer in labour?
2 Conti tu i mesi della loro gravidanza e sai tu quando devono figliare?	2 Have you ever counted the months that they carry their young? Do you know when they give birth?
3 Si curvano e depongono i figli, metton fine alle loro doglie.	3 They crouch to drop their young, they get rid of their burdens
4 Robusti sono i loro figli, crescono in campagna, partono e non tornano più da esse.	4 and the calves, having grown big and strong, go off into the desert and never come back to them.
5 Chi lascia libero l'asino selvatico e chi scioglie i legami dell'ònagro,	5 Who has given the wild donkey his freedom, who has undone the harness of the brayer?
6 al quale ho dato la steppa per casa e per dimora la terra salmastra?	6 I have given him the wastelands as his home, the salt plain as his habitat.
7 Del fracasso della città se ne ride e gli urli dei guardiani non ode.	7 He scorns the turmoil of the town, obeys no donkey-man's shouts.
8 Gira per le montagne, sua pastura, e va in cerca di quanto è verde.	8 The mountains are the pastures that he ranges in quest of anything green.

13 L'ala dello struzzo batte festante, ma è forse penna e piuma di cicogna?	13 Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of stork or falcon?
14 Abbandona infatti alla terra le uova e sulla polvere le lascia riscaldare.	14 She leaves her eggs on the ground with only earth to warm them;

27 O al tuo comando l'aquila s'innalza e pone il suo nido sulle alture?	27 Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?
28 Abita le rocce e passa la notte sui denti di rupe o sui picchi.	28 She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress,
29 Di lassù spia la preda, lontano scrutano i suoi occhi.	29 from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.
