| 2 Sara morì a Kiriat-Arbe, cioè Hebron, nella terra di Canaan; Abramo andò a far il lamento per Sara e a piangerla. | 2 And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. |
| 3 Poi Abramo si allontanò dal suo morto e parlò ai figli di Khet: | 3 And Abraham rose up from before his dead, and said to the Hittites, |
| 4 «Io sono forestiero e di passaggio tra di voi. Datemi una proprietà sepolcrale tra di voi, così che io possa portare via il mio morto e seppellirlo». | 4 "I am a stranger and a sojourner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight." |
| 5 Allora i figli di Khet risposero: | 5 The Hittites answered Abraham, |
| 6 «Ascolta noi, piuttosto, o signore! Tu sei un principe di Dio in mezzo a noi: nel migliore dei nostri sepolcri seppellisci il tuo morto. | 12 Allora Abramo si inchinò davanti a lui alla presenza del popolo della terra. | 12 Then Abraham bowed down before the people of the land. |
| 13 Parlò a Efron, mentre lo udiva il popolo della terra, e disse: «Se proprio tu... Ascolta me piuttosto: io ti do il prezzo del campo. Accettalo da me, così vi seppellirò il mio morto». | 13 And he said to Ephron in the hearing of the people of the land, "But if you will, hear me; I will give the price of the field; accept it from me, that I may bury my dead there." |
| 14 Efron rispose ad Abramo: | 14 Ephron answered Abraham, |
| 15 «Ascolta me piuttosto, mio signore: una terra di quattrocento sicli d’argento che cosa è mai tra me e te? Seppellisci dunque il tuo morto!» | 15 "My lord, listen to me; a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver, what is that between you and me? Bury your dead." |
| 16 Allora Abramo acconsentì alla richiesta di Efron, e Abramo pesò a Efron il prezzo che egli aveva fissato, mentre lo udivano i figli di Khet, cioè quattrocento sicli d’argento, della moneta corrente sul mercato. | 16 Abraham agreed with Ephron; and Abraham weighed out for Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the Hittites, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the weights current among the merchants. |
