1 (Alef)Io sono l’uomo che ha provato la miseria sotto la sferza della sua ira.	1 I am a man who knows affliction from the rod of his anger,
2 (Alef) Egli mi ha guidato, mi ha fatto camminare nelle tenebre e non nella luce.	2 One whom he has led and forced to walk in darkness, not in the light;
3 (Alef) Sì, contro di me egli volge e rivolge la sua mano tutto il giorno.	3 Against me alone he brings back his hand again and again all the day.
4 (Bet) Egli ha consumato la mia carne e la mia pelle, ha rotto le mie ossa.	4 He has worn away my flesh and my skin, he has broken my bones;
5 (Bet) Ha costruito sopra di me, mi ha circondato di veleno e di affanno.	5 He has beset me round about with poverty and weariness;
6 (Bet) Mi ha fatto abitare in luoghi tenebrosi come i morti da gran tempo.	6 He has left me to dwell in the dark like those long dead.
7 (Ghimel)Mi ha costruito un muro tutt’intorno, non posso più uscire; ha reso pesanti le mie catene.	7 He has hemmed me in with no escape and weighed me down with chains;
8 (Ghimel) Anche se grido e invoco aiuto, egli soffoca la mia preghiera.	8 Even when I cry out for help, he stops my prayer;
9 (Ghimel) Ha sbarrato le mie vie con blocchi di pietra, ha ostruito i miei sentieri.	9 He has blocked my ways with fitted stones, and turned my paths aside.
10 (Dalet) Era per me un orso in agguato, un leone in luoghi nascosti.	10 A lurking bear he has been to me, a lion in ambush!
11 (Dalet) Seminando di spine la mia via, mi ha lacerato, mi ha reso desolato.	11 He deranged my ways, set me astray, left me desolate.
12 (Dalet) Ha teso l’arco, mi ha posto come bersaglio alle sue saette.	12 He bent his bow, and set me up as the target for his arrow.
13 (He) Ha conficcato nei miei reni le frecce della sua faretra.	13 He pierces my sides with shafts from his quiver.
14 (He) Sono diventato lo scherno di tutti i popoli, la loro beffarda canzone tutto il giorno.	14 I have become a laughingstock for all nations, their taunt all the day long;
15 (He) Mi ha saziato con erbe amare, mi ha dissetato con assenzio.	15 He has sated me with bitter food, made me drink my fill of wormwood.
16 (Vau) Ha spezzato i miei denti con la ghiaia, mi ha steso nella polvere.	16 He has broken my teeth with gravel, pressed my face in the dust;
17 (Vau) Sono rimasto lontano dalla pace, ho dimenticato il benessere.	17 My soul is deprived of peace, I have forgotten what happiness is;
18 (Vau) E dico: «È scomparsa la mia gloria, la speranza che mi veniva dal Signore».	18 I tell myself my future is lost, all that I hoped for from the LORD.
19 (Zain) Il ricordo della mia miseria e del mio vagare è come assenzio e veleno.	19 The thought of my homeless poverty is wormwood and gall;
20 (Zain) Ben se ne ricorda la mia anima e si accascia dentro di me.	20 Remembering it over and over leaves my soul downcast within me.
21 (Zain) Questo intendo richiamare al mio cuore, e per questo voglio riprendere speranza.	21 But I will call this to mind, as my reason to have hope:
22 (Het) Le grazie del Signore non sono finite, non sono esaurite le sue misericordie.	22 The favors of the LORD are not exhausted, his mercies are not spent;
23 (Het) Si rinnovano ogni mattina, grande è la sua fedeltà.	23 They are renewed each morning, so great is his faithfulness.
24 (Het) «Mia parte è il Signore – io esclamo –, per questo in lui spero».	24 My portion is the LORD, says my soul; therefore will I hope in him.
25 (Tet) Buono è il Signore con chi spera in lui, con colui che lo cerca.	25 Good is the LORD to one who waits for him, to the soul that seeks him;
26 (Tet) È bene aspettare in silenzio la salvezza del Signore.	26 It is good to hope in silence for the saving help of the LORD.
27 (Tet) È bene per l’uomo portare un giogo nella sua giovinezza.	27 It is good for a man to bear the yoke from his youth.
28 (Iod)Sieda costui solitario e resti in silenzio, poiché egli glielo impone.	28 Let him sit alone and in silence, when it is laid upon him.
29 (Iod)Ponga nella polvere la bocca, forse c’è ancora speranza.	29 Let him put his mouth to the dust; there may yet be hope.
30 (Iod)Porga a chi lo percuote la sua guancia, si sazi di umiliazioni.	30 Let him offer his cheek to be struck, let him be filled with disgrace.
31 (Caf) Poiché il Signore non respinge per sempre.	31 For the Lord's rejection does not last forever;
32 (Caf) Ma, se affligge, avrà anche pietà secondo il suo grande amore.	32 Though he punishes, he takes pity, in the abundance of his mercies;
33 (Caf) Poiché contro il suo desiderio egli umilia e affligge i figli dell’uomo.	33 He has no joy in afflicting or grieving the sons of men.
34 (Lamed)Schiacciano sotto i loro piedi tutti i prigionieri del paese.	34 When anyone tramples underfoot all the prisoners in the land,
35 (Lamed) Ledono i diritti di un uomo davanti al volto dell’Altissimo.	35 When he distorts men's rights in the very sight of the Most High,
36 (Lamed) Opprimono un altro in una causa. Forse il Signore non vede tutto questo?	36 When he presses a crooked claim, the Lord does not look on unconcerned.
37 (Mem) Chi mai ha parlato e la sua parola si è avverata, senza che il Signore lo avesse comandato?	37 Who commands so that it comes to pass, except the Lord ordains it;
38 (Mem) Dalla bocca dell’Altissimo non procedono forse le sventure e il bene?	38 Except it proceeds from the mouth of the Most High, whether the thing be good or bad!
39 (Mem) Perché si rammarica un essere vivente, un uomo, per i castighi dei suoi peccati?	39 Why should any living man complain, any mortal, in the face of his sins?
40 (Nun) «Esaminiamo la nostra condotta e scrutiamola, ritorniamo al Signore.	40 Let us search and examine our ways that we may return to the LORD!
41 (Nun) Innalziamo i nostri cuori al di sopra delle mani, verso Dio nei cieli.	41 Let us reach out our hearts toward God in heaven!
42 (Nun) Noi abbiamo peccato e siamo stati ribelli, e tu non ci hai perdonato.	42 We have sinned and rebelled; you have not forgiven us.
43 (Samec) Ti sei avvolto nell’ira e ci hai perseguitati, hai ucciso senza pietà.	43 You veiled yourself in wrath and pursued us, you slew us and took no pity;
44 (Samec) Ti sei avvolto in una nube, perché la supplica non giungesse fino a te.	44 You wrapped yourself in a cloud which prayer could not pierce.
45 (Samec) Ci hai ridotti a spazzatura e rifiuto in mezzo ai popoli.	45 You have made us offscourings and refuse among the nations.
46 (Pe) Hanno spalancato la bocca contro di noi tutti i nostri nemici.	46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us;
47 (Pe) Nostra sorte sono terrore e fossa, sterminio e rovina».	47 Terror and the pit have been our lot, desolation and destruction;
48 (Pe) Rivoli di lacrime scorrono dai miei occhi, per la rovina della figlia del mio popolo.	48 My eyes run with streams of water over the downfall of the daughter of my people.
49 (Ain) Il mio occhio piange senza sosta perché non ha pace,	49 My eyes flow without ceasing, there is no respite,
50 (Ain) finché non guardi e non veda il Signore dal cielo.	50 Till the LORD from heaven looks down and sees.
51 (Ain) Il mio occhio mi tormenta per tutte le figlie della mia città.	51 My eyes torment my soul at the sight of all the daughters of my city.
52 (Sade) Mi hanno dato la caccia come a un passero coloro che mi odiano senza ragione.	52 Those who were my enemies without cause hunted me down like a bird;
53 (Sade) Mi hanno chiuso vivo nella fossa e hanno gettato pietre su di me.	53 They struck me down alive in the pit, and sealed me in with a stone.
54 (Sade) Sono salite le acque fin sopra il mio capo; ho detto: «È finita per me».	54 The waters flowed over my head, and I said, "I am lost!"
55 (Kof) Ho invocato il tuo nome, o Signore, dalla fossa profonda.	55 I called upon your name, O LORD, from the bottom of the pit;
56 (Kof) Tu hai udito il mio grido: «Non chiudere l’orecchio al mio sfogo».	56 You heard me call, "Let not your ear be deaf to my cry for help!"
57 (Kof) Tu eri vicino quando t’invocavo, hai detto: «Non temere!».	57 You came to my aid when I called to you; you said, "Have no fear!"
58 (Res) Tu hai difeso, Signore, la mia causa, hai riscattato la mia vita.	58 You defended me in mortal danger, you redeemed my life.
59 (Res) Hai visto, o Signore, la mia umiliazione, difendi il mio diritto!	59 You see, O LORD, how I am wronged; do me justice!
60 (Res) Hai visto tutte le loro vendette, tutte le loro trame contro di me.	60 You see all their vindictiveness, all their plots against me.
61 (Sin) Hai udito, Signore, i loro insulti, tutte le loro trame contro di me.	61 You hear their insults, O LORD, (all their plots against me),
62 (Sin) I discorsi dei miei oppositori e i loro pensieri sono contro di me tutto il giorno.	62 The whispered murmurings of my foes, against me all the day;
63 (Sin)Osserva quando siedono e quando si alzano; io sono la loro beffarda canzone.	63 Whether they sit or stand, see, I am their taunt song.
64 (Tau) Ripagali, o Signore, secondo l’opera delle loro mani.	64 Requite them as they deserve, O LORD, according to their deeds;
65 (Tau) Rendili duri di cuore, sia su di loro la tua maledizione!	65 Give them hardness of heart, as your curse upon them;
66 (Tau) Perseguitali nell’ira, Signore, e distruggili sotto il cielo.	66 Pursue them in wrath and destroy them from under your heavens!
