1 Eliu continuò a dire:	1 Then Elihu continued and said:
2 Ascoltate, saggi, le mie parole e voi, sapienti, porgetemi l'orecchio,	2 Hear, O wise men, my discourse, and you that have knowledge, hear me!
3 Perché l'orecchio distingue le parole, come il palato assapora i cibi.	3 For the ear tests words, as the taste does food.
4 Esploriamo noi ciò che è giusto, indaghiamo fra di noi quale sia il bene:	4 Let us discern for ourselves what is right; let us learn between us what is good.
5 poiché Giobbe ha detto: "Io son giusto, ma Dio mi ha tolto il mio diritto;	5 For Job has said, "I am innocent, but God has taken what is my due.
6 contro il mio diritto passo per menzognero, inguaribile è la mia piaga benché senza colpa".	6 Notwithstanding my right I am set at nought; in my wound the arrow rankles, sinless though I am."
7 Chi è come Giobbe che beve, come l'acqua, l'insulto,	7 What man is like Job? He drinks in blasphemies like water,
8 che fa la strada in compagnia dei malfattori, andando con uomini iniqui?	8 Keeps company with evildoers and goes along with wicked men,
9 Poiché egli ha detto: "Non giova all'uomo essere in buona grazia con Dio".	9 When he says, "It profits a man nought that he is pleasing to God."
10 Perciò ascoltatemi, uomini di senno: lungi da Dio l'iniquità e dall'Onnipotente l'ingiustizia!	10 Therefore, men of understanding, hearken to me: far be it from God to do wickedness; far from the Almighty to do wrong!
11 Poiché egli ripaga l'uomo secondo il suo operato e fa trovare ad ognuno secondo la sua condotta.	11 Rather, he requites men for their conduct, and brings home to a man his way of life.
12 In verità, Dio non agisce da ingiusto e l'Onnipotente non sovverte il diritto!	12 Surely, God cannot act wickedly, the Almighty cannot violate justice.
13 Chi mai gli ha affidato la terra e chi ha disposto il mondo intero?	13 Who gave him government over the earth, or who else set all the land in its place?
14 Se egli richiamasse il suo spirito a sé e a sé ritraesse il suo soffio,	14 If he were to take back his spirit to himself, withdraw to himself his breath,
15 ogni carne morirebbe all'istante e l'uomo ritornerebbe in polvere.	15 All flesh would perish together, and man would return to the dust.
16 Se hai intelletto, ascolta bene questo, porgi l'orecchio al suono delle mie parole.	16 Now, do you, O Job, hear this! Hearken to the words I speak!
17 Può mai governare chi odia il diritto? E tu osi condannare il Gran Giusto?	17 Can an enemy of justice indeed be in control, or will you condemn the supreme Just One,
18 lui che dice ad un re: "Iniquo!" e ai principi: "Malvagi!",	18 Who says to a king, "You are worthless!" and to nobles, "You are wicked!"
19 lui che non usa parzialità con i potenti e non preferisce al povero il ricco, perché tutti costoro sono opera delle sue mani?	19 Who neither favors the person of princes, nor respects the rich more than the poor? For they are all the work of his hands;
20 In un istante muoiono e nel cuore della notte sono colpiti i potenti e periscono; e senza sforzo rimuove i tiranni,	20 in a moment they die, even at midnight. He brings on nobles, and takes them away, removing the powerful without lifting a hand;
21 poiché egli tiene gli occhi sulla condotta dell'uomo e vede tutti i suoi passi.	21 For his eyes are upon the ways of man, and he beholds all his steps.
22 Non vi è tenebra, non densa oscurità, dove possano nascondersi i malfattori.	22 There is no darkness so dense that evildoers can hide in it.
23 Poiché non si pone all'uomo un termine per comparire davanti a Dio in giudizio:	23 For he forewarns no man of his time to come before God in judgment.
24 egli fiacca i potenti, senza fare inchieste, e colloca altri al loro posto.	24 Without a trial he breaks the mighty, and sets others in their stead,
25 Poiché conosce le loro opere, li travolge nella notte e sono schiacciati;	25 Therefore he discerns their works; he turns at night and crushes them.
26 come malvagi li percuote, li colpisce alla vista di tutti;
27 perché si sono allontanati da lui e di tutte le sue vie non si sono curati,	27 Because they turned away from him and heeded none of his ways,
28 sì da far giungere fino a lui il grido dell'oppresso e fargli udire il lamento dei poveri.	28 But caused the cries of the poor to reach him, so that he heard the plea of the afflicted.
29 Se egli tace, chi lo può condannare? Se vela la faccia, chi lo può vedere? Ma sulle nazioni e sugli individui egli veglia,	29 If he remains tranquil, who then can condemn? If he hides his face, who then can behold him?
30 perché non regni un uomo perverso, perché il popolo non abbia inciampi.
31 Si può dunque dire a Dio: "Porto la pena, senza aver fatto il male;	31 When anyone says to God, "I was misguided; I will offend no more.
32 se ho peccato, mostramelo; se ho commesso l'iniquità, non lo farò più"?	32 Teach me wherein I have sinned; if I have done wrong, I will do so no more,"
33 Forse, secondo le tue idee dovrebbe ricompensare, perché tu rifiuti il suo giudizio? Poiché tu devi scegliere, non io, di', dunque, quello che sai.	33 Would you then say that God must punish, since you reject what he is doing? It is you who must choose, not I; speak, therefore, what you know.
34 Gli uomini di senno mi diranno con l'uomo saggio che mi ascolta:	34 Men of understanding will say to me, every wise man who hears my views:
35 "Giobbe non parla con sapienza e le sue parole sono prive di senno".	35 "Job speaks without intelligence, and his words are without sense."
36 Bene, Giobbe sia esaminato fino in fondo, per le sue risposte da uomo empio,	36 Let Job be tried to the limit, since his answers are those of the impious;
37 perché aggiunge al suo peccato la rivolta, in mezzo a noi batte le mani e moltiplica le parole contro Dio.	37 For he is adding rebellion to his sin by brushing off our arguments and addressing many words to God.
