| 1 Poi Jahvè gli apparve alla quercia di Mambre, mentre egli sedeva al’ingresso della tenda nell’ora più calda del giorno. | 1 And the LORD appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre, as he sat at the door of his tent in the heat of the day. |
| 2 Egli alzò gli occhi, vide che tre uomini stavano in piedi presso di lui e, appena li vide, corse loro incontro all’ingresso della tenda e si prostrò fino a terra | 2 He lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, three men stood in front of him. When he saw them, he ran from the tent door to meet them, and bowed himself to the earth, |
| 3 dicendo: «Mio signore, se ho, trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi non passare oltre senza fermarti dal tuo servitore. | 3 and said, "My lord, if I have found favor in your sight, do not pass by your servant. |
| 4 Si porti un po’ di acqua: vi laverete i piedi e vi stenderete sotto l'albero. | 4 Let a little water be brought, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree, |
| 5 Prenderò un boccone di pane e vi ristorerete il cuore; dopo, sì, potrete proseguire, perché voi siete passati per questo dal vostro servitore». Quelli dissero: «Fa’ pure come hai detto». | 5 while I fetch a morsel of bread, that you may refresh yourselves, and after that you may pass on--since you have come to your servant." So they said, "Do as you have said." |
| 6 Allora Abramo andò in fretta nella tenda da Sara e disse: «Presto: tre sea di fior di farina, impastala e fanne focacce». | 6 And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah, and said, "Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes." |
| 7 Abramo corse al bestiame grosso, prese un vitello tenero e gustoso e lo diede allo schiavo che si affrettò a prepararlo. | 7 And Abraham ran to the herd, and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to the servant, who hastened to prepare it. |
| 8 Prese bevanda di latte acido e latte fresco insieme con il vitello che aveva preparato, e li depose davanti a loro e così, mentre egli stava in piedi presso di loro sotto l’albero, quelli mangiarono. | 8 Then he took curds, and milk, and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree while they ate. |
| 9 Poi gli dissero: «Dov’è Sara tua moglie?» Rispose: «È là, nella tenda». | 9 They said to him, "Where is Sarah your wife?" And he said, "She is in the tent." |
| 10 Riprese: «Tornerò di sicuro da te fra un anno e allora Sara tua moglie avrà un figlio»: Intanto Sara stava ad ascoltare all’ingresso della tenda dietro di lui. | 10 The LORD said, "I will surely return to you in the spring, and Sarah your wife shall have a son." And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. |
| 11 Ora, Abramo e Sara erano vecchi, avanzati negli anni; era cessato di avvenire a Sara ciò che avviene regolarmente alle donne. | 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. |
| 12 Allora Sara rise dentro di sé, dicendo: «Proprio adesso che sono logora, dovrei provare piacere! E mio marito è vecchio!» | 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, "After I have grown old, and my husband is old, shall I have pleasure?" |
| 13 Ma Jahvè disse ad Abramo: «Perché Sara ha riso dicendo: “Davvero dovrò partorire mentre sono vecchia?”. | 13 The LORD said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh, and say, 'Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?' |
| 14 C’è forse qualche cosa che sia troppo meravigliosa per Jahvè? Al tempo fissato tornerò da te, fra un anno, e Sara avrà un figlio». | 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, in the spring, and Sarah shall have a son." |
| 15 Allora Sara negò dicendo: «Non ho riso!», perché ebbe paura, ma quegli disse: «Sì, hai proprio riso!». | 15 But Sarah denied, saying, "I did not laugh"; for she was afraid. He said, "No, but you did laugh." |
| 16 Poi gli uomini si alzarono di là e andarono a contemplare dall’alto il panorama di Sodoma, mentre Abramo li accompagnava per accomiatarsi da loro. | 16 Then the men set out from there, and they looked toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to set them on their way. |
| 17 E Jahvè diceva: «Devo tenere nascosto ad Abramo ciò che sto per fare, | 17 The LORD said, "Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do, |
| 18 mentre Abramo dovrà diventare una nazione grande e potente e in lui saranno benedette tutte le nazioni della terra? | 18 seeing that Abraham shall become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall bless themselves by him? |
| 19 Infatti io l’ho favorito, perché egli obblighi i suoi figli e la sua casa dopo di lui a osservare la via di Jahvè, operando ciò che è giustizia e diritto, perché Jahvè attui per Abramo quanto gli ha promesso». | 19 No, for I have chosen him, that he may charge his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing righteousness and justice; so that the LORD may bring to Abraham what he has promised him." |
| 20 Disse allora Jahvè: «Il grido contro Sodoma e Gomorra è troppo grande e il loro peccato è assai grave! | 20 Then the LORD said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, |
| 21 Voglio scendere e vedere se proprio hanno fatto tutto il male di cui mi è giunto il grido oppure no; lo voglio sapere!» | 21 I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry which has come to me; and if not, I will know." |
| 22 Poi gli uomini partirono di là e andarono verso Sodoma, mentre Abramo stava sempre davanti a Jahvè. | 22 So the men turned from there, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham still stood before the LORD. |
| 23 Allora Abramo gli si avvicinò e gli disse: «Davvero stai per sopprimere il giusto con l’empio? | 23 Then Abraham drew near, and said, "Wilt thou indeed destroy the righteous with the wicked? |
| 24 Forse vi sono cinquanta giusti entro la città: davvero li vuoi sopprime e non perdonerai a quel luogo in grazia dei cinquanta giusti che vi si trovano in mezzo? | 24 Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt thou then destroy the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? |
| 25 Lungi da te il fare tale cosa! Far morire il giusto con l’empio, così che il giusto sia alla stregua dell'empio; lungi da te! Forse il giudice di tutta la terra non farà giustizia?» | 25 Far be it from thee to do such a thing, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from thee! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" |
| 26 Rispose Jahvè: «Se a Sodoma troverò cinquanta giusti nella città, perdonerò a tutto il luogo per causa loro». | 26 And the LORD said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake." |
| 27 Rispose Abramo e disse: «Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore, io che sono polvere e cenere... | 27 Abraham answered, "Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. |
| 28 Forse ai cinquanta giusti ne mancheranno cinque; per questi cinque distruggerai tutta la città?» Rispose: «Non la distruggerò, se ve ne trovo quarantacinque». | 28 Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking? Wilt thou destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." |
| 29 Ancora l’altro riprese a parlargli e disse: «Forse là se ne troveranno quaranta...». Rispose: «Non lo farò a causa di quei quaranta». | 29 Again he spoke to him, and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." |
| 30 Riprese: «Non si adiri il mio Signore. Possa io dire: “Forse là se ne troveranno trenta”...». Rispose: «Non lo farò, se ve ne troverò trenta». | 30 Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." |
| 31 Riprese: «Vedi come ardisco parlare al mio Signore! Forse là se ne troveranno venti...». Rispose: «Non la distruggerò a causa di quei venti». | 31 He said, "Behold, I have taken upon myself to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." |
| 32 Riprese: «Non si adiri il mio Signore. Possa io parlare ancora una sola volta: “Forse là se ne troveranno dieci”». Rispose: «Non la distruggerò a causa di quei dieci». | 32 Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there." He answered, "For the sake of ten I will not destroy it." |
| 33 Poi Jahvè, come ebbe finito di parlare con Abramo, se ne andò e Abramo ritornò alla sua residenza. | 33 And the LORD went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. |
