NOVA VULGATANEW AMERICAN BIBLE
1 Qui vindicari vult, a Domino inveniet vindictam,
et peccata illius servans servabit.
1 The vengeful will suffer the LORD'S vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail.
2 Dimitte proximo tuo nocenti te,
et tunc deprecanti tibi peccata tua solventur.
2 Forgive your neighbor's injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven.
3 Homo homini reservat iram
et a Deo quaerit medelam?
3 Should a man nourish anger against his fellows and expect healing from the LORD?
4 In hominem similem sibi non habet misericordiam
et de peccatis suis deprecatur?
4 Should a man refuse mercy to his fellows, yet seek pardon for his own sins?
5 Ipse, cum caro sit, reservat iram
et propitiationem petit a Deo?
Quis exorabit pro delictis illius?
5 If he who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins?
6 Memento novissimorum et desine inimicari,
6 Remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death and decay, and cease from sin!
7 tabitudinis et mortis et permane in mandatis eius.
7 Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor; of the Most High's covenant, and overlook faults.
8 Memorare mandatorum et non irascaris proximo.
8 Avoid strife and your sins will be fewer, for a quarrelsome man kindles disputes,
9 Memorare testamentum Altissimi
et ne respicias ignorantiam proximi.
9 Commits the sin of disrupting friendship and sows discord among those at peace.
10 Abstine te a lite et minues peccata:
10 The more wood, the greater the fire, the more underlying it, the fiercer the fight; The greater a man's strength, the sterner his anger, the greater his power, the greater his wrath.
11 homo enim iracundus incendit litem,
et vir peccator turbabit amicos
et in medio pacem habentium immittet inimicitiam.
11 Pitch and resin make fires flare up, and insistent quarrels provoke bloodshed.
12 Secundum enim ligna silvae sic ignis exardescit,
et secundum virtutem hominis sic iracundia illius erit,
et secundum substantiam suam exaltabit iram suam.
12 If you blow upon a spark, it quickens into flame, if you spit on it, it dies out; yet both you do with your mouth!
13 Certamen festinatum incendit ignem,
et lis festinans effundit sanguinem,
et lingua testificans adducit mortem.
13 Cursed be gossips and the double-tongued, for they destroy the peace of many.
14 Si sufflaveris in scintillam, quasi ignis exardebit;
et, si exspueris super illam, exstinguetur:
utraque ex ore tuo proficiscuntur.
14 A meddlesome tongue subverts many, and makes them refugees among the peoples; It destroys walled cities, and overthrows powerful dynasties.
15 Susurro et bilinguis maledictus:
multos enim perdidit pacem habentes.
15 A meddlesome tongue can drive virtuous women from their homes and rob them of the fruit of their toil;
16 Lingua tertia multos commovit
et dispersit illos de gente in gentem;
16 Whoever heeds it has no rest, nor can he dwell in peace.
17 civitates muratas divitum destruxit
et domos magnatorum evertit;
17 A blow from a whip raises a welt, but a blow from the tongue smashes bones;
18 virtutes populorum concidit
et gentes fortes dissolvit.
18 Many have fallen by the edge of the sword, but not as many as by the tongue.
19 Lingua tertia mulieres viratas eiecit
et privavit illas laboribus suis.
19 Happy he who is sheltered from it, and has not endured its wrath; Who has not borne its yoke nor been fettered with its chain;
20 Qui respicit illam, non habebit requiem
nec habebit amicum, in quo requiescat.
20 For its yoke is a yoke of iron and its chains are chains of bronze!
21 Flagelli plaga livorem facit,
plaga autem linguae comminuet ossa;
21 Dire is the death it inflicts, besides which even the nether world is a gain;
22 multi ceciderunt in ore gladii,
sed non sic quasi qui interierunt per linguam suam.
22 It will not take hold among the just nor scorch them in its flame,
23 Beatus, qui tectus est ab ea,
qui in iracundiam illius non transivit,
et qui non attraxit iugum illius
et in vinculis eius non est ligatus.
23 But those who forsake the LORD will fall victims to it, as it burns among them unquenchably! It will hurl itself against them like a lion; like a panther, it will tear them to pieces.
24 Iugum enim illius iugum ferreum est,
et vinculum illius vinculum aereum est;
24 As you hedge round your vineyard with thorns, set barred doors over your mouth;
25 mors illius mors nequissima,
et utilis potius infernus quam illa.
25 As you seal up your silver and gold, so balance and weigh your words.
26 Non obtinebit imperium iustorum,
et in flamma eius non comburentur;
26 Take care not to slip by your tongue and fall victim to your foe waiting in ambush.
27 qui relinquunt Deum, incident in illam,
et exardebit in illis et non exstinguetur
et immittetur in illos quasi leo
et quasi pardus laedet illos.
28 Saepi aures tuas spinis, linguam nequam noli audire
et ori tuo facito ostia et seras.
29 Aurum tuum et argentum tuum obsigna
et verbis tuis facito stateram et frenos ori tuo rectos.
30 Et attende, ne forte labaris in lingua,
ne cadas in conspectu inimicorum insidiantium tibi,
et sit casus tuus insanabilis in mortem.
