Siracide 16

NOVA VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
1 Ne iucunderis in filiis impiis; si multiplicentur, non oblecteris superipsos,
si non est timor Dei cum illis.
1 Do not long for a brood of worthless children, and do not take pleasure in godless sons.
2 Non credas vitae illorum
et ne respexeris in labores eorum.
2 However many you have, take no pleasure in them, unless the fear of the Lord lives among them.
3 Melior est enim unus timens Deum
quam mille filii impii;
3 Do not count on their having long life, do not put too much faith in their number; for better have onethan a thousand, better die childless than have children who are godless.
4 et potius est mori sine filiis
quam relinquere filios impios.
4 One person of sense can populate a city, but a race of lawless people will be destroyed.
5 Ab uno sensato inhabitabitur patria,
tribus autem impiorum deseretur.
5 My eyes have seen many such things, my ears have heard things even more impressive.
6 Multa talia vidit oculus meus,
et fortiora horum audivit auris mea.
6 Fire is kindled in a sinful society, Retribution blazes in a rebel ious nation.
7 In synagoga peccantium exardebit ignis,
et in gente incredibili exardescet ira.
7 God did not pardon the giants of old who, confident in their strength, had rebel ed.
8 Non exoraverunt eum antiqui gigantes,
qui rebelles fuerunt confidentes suae virtuti.
8 He did not spare the people with whom Lot lived; he abhorred them, rather, for their pride.
9 Et non pepercit accolis Lot
et exsecratus est eos prae superbia verbi illorum;
9 He was pitiless to the nation of perdition -- those people who gloried in their sins-
10 non misertus est gentis anathematis,
qui depulsi sunt in peccatis suis.
10 as also to the six hundred thousand men on the march, who had banded together in their obstinacy.
11 Et sicut sescenta milia peditum,
qui congregati sunt in duritia cordis sui;
et, si unus fuisset cervicatus,
mirum si fuisset immunis:
11 And had there been only one man stubborn, it would have been amazing had he escaped unpunished,since mercy and wrath alike belong to the Lord who is mighty to forgive and to pour out wrath.
12 misericordia enim et ira est cum illo,
sustinens, exorabilis et effundens iram.
12 As great as his mercy, so is his severity; he judges each person as his deeds deserve:
13 ecundum multam misericordiam suam, sic et correptio illius:
hominem secundum opera sua iudicat.
13 the sinner wil not escape with his il -gotten gains nor the patience of the devout go for nothing.
14 Non effugiet in rapina peccator,
et non irrita erit sustinentia iusti.
14 He takes note of every charitable action, and everyone is treated as he deserves.
15 Omni misericordiae erit merces:
unusquisque secundum meritum operum suorum inveniet coram se
et secundum intellectum peregrinationis ipsius.
Dominus induravit cor pharaonis, ne agnosceret illum,
ut opera sua innotescerent sub caelo.
Misericordia eius apparuit omnibus creaturis eius,
lucem suam et tenebras dispertiit filiis hominum.
15
16 Non dicas: “ A Deo abscondar!
Et, ex summo quis mei memorabitur?
16
17 In populo magno non agnoscar;
quae est enim anima mea in tam immensa creatura? ”.
17 Do not say, 'I shal hide from the Lord; who is going to remember me up there? I shall not be noticedamong so many people; what am I in the immensity of creation?'
18 Ecce caelum et caeli caelorum,
abyssus et universa terra et quae in eis sunt,
in visitatione illius commovebuntur;
18 For see, the sky and the heavens above the sky, the abyss and the earth shake at his visitation.
19 montes simul et colles et fundamenta terrae,
cum conspexerit illa Deus, tremore concutientur.
19 The mountains and earth's foundations alike quail and tremble when he looks at them.
20 Et in omnibus his non apponet cor,
etenim omne cor intellegitur ab illo.
20 But to all this no one gives thought. Who keeps his movements in mind?
21 Et vias illius quis intellegit
et procellam, quam nec oculus videbit hominis?
21 The storm wind itself is invisible, and most of what he does goes undetected.
22 Nam plurima illius opera sunt in absconsis,
et opera iustitiae eius quis enuntiabit, aut quis sustinebit?
Longe enim est decretum,
et interrogatio omnium in consummatione est.
22 'Who wil report whether justice has been done? Who wil be watching? The covenant is remote!'
23 Qui minoratur corde, cogitat ista,
et vir imprudens et errans cogitat stulta.
23 Such are the thoughts of the person of little sense, stupid, misguided, cherishing his fol y.
24 Audi me, fili, et disce prudentiam sensus,
24 Listen to me, my child, and learn knowledge, and give your whole mind to my words.
25 et dicam in aequitate disciplinam
et scrutabor enarrare sapientiam;
et in verbis meis attende in corde tuo.
Edico in aequitate spiritus virtutes,
quas posuit Deus in opera sua ab initio,
et in veritate enuntio scientiam eius.
25 I shal expound discipline methodically and proclaim knowledge with precision.
26 Quando creavit Deus opera sua ab initio
et ab institutione ipsorum distinxit partes illorum,
26 When God created his works in the beginning, he assigned them their places as soon as they weremade.
27 ornavit in aeternum opera illorum
et dominatum eorum in generationibus suis.
Nec esurierunt nec laboraverunt
et non destiterunt ab operibus suis.
27 He determined his works for al time, from their origins to their distant generations. They know neitherhunger nor weariness, and they never desert their duties.
28 Unusquisque proximum sibi non angustiavit,
28 Not one has ever got in the way of another, and they wil never disobey his word.
29 et usque in aeternum non erunt incredibiles verbo illius.
29 And afterwards the Lord looked at the earth, and filled it with his good things.
30 Post haec Deus in terram respexit
et complevit illam bonis suis;
30 He covered its surface with every kind of animal, and to it they wil return.
31 anima omnis vitalis cooperuit faciem ipsius,
et in ipsam iterum reversio illorum.
