1 Come la neve all'estate, e le pioggie al tempo di segatura, così male sta allo stolto la gloria.	1 In the manner of snow in the summer, and rain at the harvest, so also is glory unfit for the foolish.
2 La maldicenza scagliata senza ragione sopra di alcuno, è come un uccello, che svolazza qua, e là, e come un passerotto, che salta per ogni parte	2 Like a bird flying away to another place, and like a sparrow that hurries away freely, so also a curse uttered against someone without cause will pass away.
3 La frusta pel cavallo, la cavezza per l'asino, la verga pel dosso degli stolti	3 A whip is for a horse, and a muzzle is for donkey, and a rod is for the back of the imprudent.
4 Non rispondere allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza per non diventar simil a lui.	4 Do not respond to the foolish according to his folly, lest you become like him.
5 Rispondi allo stolto, come esige la sua stoltezza, affinchè egli non abbia a credersi saggio.	5 Respond to the foolish according to his folly, lest he imagine himself to be wise.
6 Chi pe' suoi affari spedisce un messo stolto, si taglia le gambe, e bee gli errori di quello.	6 Whoever sends words by a foolish messenger has lame feet and drinks iniquity.
7 Come uno stroppiato in darno ha belli gli stinchi, cosi non istan bene le gravi sentenze in bocca dello stolto.	7 In the manner of a lame man who has beautiful legs to no purpose, so also is a parable unfit for the mouth of the foolish.
8 Chi onora lo stolto fa come chi getta la sua pietra nel mucchio dedicato a Mercurio.	8 Just like one who casts a stone into the pile of Mercury, so also is he who gives honor to the foolish.
9 La parabola in bocca allo stolto come una spina, che spuntasse nella mano d'un briaco.	9 In the manner of a thorn, if it were to spring up from the hand of a drunkard, so also is a parable in the mouth of the foolish.
10 La sentenza del giudice finisce le iti, e chi fa tacere lo stolto calma gli sdegni.	10 Judgment determines cases. And whoever imposes silence on the foolish mitigates anger.
11 Lo stolto che ricade nella sua stoltezza è come il cane, che torna a quel, che avea vomitato.	11 Like a dog that returns to his vomit, so also is the imprudent who repeats his foolishness.
12 Hai tu veduto un uomo, che si crede sapiente? più di lui può avere speranza quegli, che non sa nulla.	12 Have you seen a man who seems wise to himself? There will be greater hope held for the unwise than for him.
13 Il pigro dice: Nella strada havvi un lione, e al capo della strada una lionessa.	13 The lazy one says, “There is a lion along the way, and a lioness in the roads.”
14 Come la porta si volge su' suoi cardini, così il pigro nel suo letto.	14 Just as a door turns upon its hinges, so also does the lazy one turn upon his bed.
15 Il pigro si nasconde la mano sotto l'ascella: è gran fatica per lui il portarla alla bocca.	15 The lazy one conceals his hand under his arms, and it is a labor for him to move it to his mouth.
16 Il pigro si crede più sapiente, che sette uomini, che pronunciano sentenze.	16 The lazy one seems wiser to himself than seven men speaking judgments.
17 Chi in passando si impaccia temerariamente nelle altrui contese, è come chi prende un cane per le orecchie.	17 Just like one who takes hold of a dog by the ears, so also is he who crosses impatiently and meddles in the quarrels of another.
18 Come è reo chi scaglia saette, e dardi mortiferi;	18 Just as he is guilty who let loose the arrows and the lances unto death,
19 Così colui che fa danno con frode all'amico, e quando viene ad essere o scoperto, dice: Non l'ho fatto con mal fine.	19 so also is the man who harms his friend by deceitfulness. And when he has been apprehended, he says, “I did it jokingly.”
20 Al mancar delle legna si spegne il fuoco, e tolto via il soffione si calmano le contese.	20 When the wood fails, the fire will be extinguished. And when the gossiper is taken away, conflicts will be quelled.
21 Come i carboni danno il fuoco, e la legna la fiamma, cosi l'uomo iracondo accende le risse.	21 Just as charcoals are to burning coals, and wood is to fire, so also is an angry man who stirs up quarrels.
22 Le parole del soffione paiono semplici, ma elle penetrano nell'intimo delle viscere,	22 The words of a whisperer seem simple, but they penetrate to the innermost parts of the self.
23 Le labbra turgide congiunte con pessimo cuore, son come argento impuro, col quale tu pretenda di ornare un vaso di terra cotta.	23 In the same manner as an earthen vessel, if it were adorned with impure silver, conceited lips are allied with a wicked heart.
24 Al suo parlare si riconose il nemico, quando macchina inganni in cuor a suo.	24 An enemy is known by his lips, though it is from his heart that he draws out deceit.
25 Allorché egli abbassa sua voce, o non te ne fidare, perocché egli ha sette iniquità in cuor suo.	25 When he will have lowered his voice, do not believe him, for there are seven vices in his heart.
26 Si scoprirà nella pubblica adunanza la malizia di colui, il quale con finzione nasconde la sua mala volontà.	26 Whoever covers hatred with deceit, his malice shall be revealed in the assembly.
27 Chi scava la fossa vi caderà, e la pietra cadrà addosso a chi l'ha smossa.	27 Whoever digs a pit will fall into it. And whoever rolls a stone, it will roll back to him.
28 La lingua dell'ingannatore non ama la verità, e la bocca adulatrìce è a cagion di rovine.	28 A false tongue does not love truth. And a slippery mouth works ruin.
