Proverbi 23

BIBBIA MARTINI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Quando sarai assiso alla mensa del principe, pon mente, e fa attenzione a quelle cose, che ti son posta davanti:	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 E mettiti un coltello alla gola, sa pure sei padrone dell'anima tua.	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 Non desiderare le sue vivande, perché elle son cibo che inganna.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 Non ti affannare per diventare ricco; ma modera la tua sollecitudine.	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 Non alzare gli occhi alle ricchezze, che aver non puoi: perocché elle prenderanno ale come di aquila, e voleranno per lo cielo.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 Non andar a mangiare coll'avaro, e non desiderare la sua tavola:	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 Perché egli a imitazione dell'indovino, e dell'astrologo congettura quello, che non sa. Egli ti dirà: Mangia, e bevi; ma il cuore di lui non è con te.	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.
8 Tu vomiterai quello, che avrai mangiato, e farai getto di tue belle parole.	8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.
9 Non ti mettere a ragionare dinanzi agli stolti, perché sprezzeranno i tuoi sensati ragionamenti.	9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.
10 Non toccare i termini dei padroni di tenera età; e non metter piede nel podere de' pupilli:	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 Imperocché il loro curatore è forte, ed egli giudicherà la causa di quelli contro di te.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Applica alla dottrina il tuo cuore, e le tue orecchie alle parole della scienza.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 Non privare il fanciullo della correzione: perocché se tu lo percuoterai colla verga, egli non morrà.	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 Tu lo percuoterai colla verga, e libererai l'anima di lui dall'inferno.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Figliuol mio, se il cuor tuo sarà saggio, il mio cuore se ne congratulerà con teco:	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 E le mie viscere esulteranno, allorché le tue labbra esporranno documenti di giustizia.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 Non portar invidia in cuor tuo ai peccatori; ma sta fisso perpetuamente nel timor del Signore:	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 Perocché averai alla fine quello che speri, e noli ti sarà tolta la tua espettazione.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Figliuol mio, ascolta, ed avrai saggezza: e indirizzerai nella via (il lei) il cuor tuo.	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 Non frequentare i conviti de' buoni, né le gozzoviglie di quelli, che mettono insieme la lor porzione delle carni per banchettare:	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 Perocché questi sbevazzando, e pagando lo scotto si rifiniscono, e dormiglioni come sono si riducono ai cenci.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Ascolta il padre tuo, che ti ha generato, e non disprezzare la madre tua quando sia invecchiata.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Compera la verità, e non alienare sapienza, la dottrina, e l'intelligenza.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 Il padre del giusto nuota nel gaudio: colui che ha generato un uom saggio, avrà in lui la sua consolazione.	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 Abbia questo gaudio il padre tuo, e la madre tua: ed esulti colei, che ti ha generato.	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Figliuol mio, dammi il tuo cuore: e gli occhi tuoi siano intenti alle mie vie.	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 Perocché fossa profonda è la donna impudica, e pozzo stretto l'adultera.	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 Ella tende insidie sulla strada come un ladrone, e ucciderà quanti vedrà degli incauti.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 A chi i guai? al padre di chi i guai? a chi le risse? a chi i precipizi? a chi le ferite, senza che si sappia il perché? a chi gli occhi salariati?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Se non a quelli, che si stanno col vino, e si studiano di votar più bicchieri?	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 Non guardare il vino quando rosseggia, quando il suo bel colore risplende nel vetro: egli entra con grazia,	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 Ma alla fine morde come serpente, e sparge veleno, come un basilisco.	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 Gli occhi tuoi mireranno la donna altrui: e la tua bocca parlerà di cose perverse.	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 E tu sarai come uno che dorme in mezzo al mare, e come un piloto abbandonato al sonno, che ha perduto il timone:	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 E dirai: Mi hanno battuto; ma io non ne ho sentito dolore: mi hanno strascinato, ma io non me ne sono accorto; quando mi leverò, e tornerò, a bere di nuovo?	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
