1 Facciamo ora l’elogio di uomini illustri, dei padri nostri nelle loro generazioni.	1 Now will I praise those godly men, our ancestors, each in his own time:
2 Il Signore li ha resi molto gloriosi: la sua grandezza è da sempre.	2 The abounding glory of the Most High's portion, his own part, since the days of old. Subduers of the land in kingly fashion, men of renown for their might,
3 Signori nei loro regni, uomini rinomati per la loro potenza, consiglieri per la loro intelligenza e annunciatori nelle profezie.	3 Or counselors in their prudence, or seers of all things in prophecy;
4 Capi del popolo con le loro decisioni e con l’intelligenza della sapienza popolare; saggi discorsi erano nel loro insegnamento.	4 Resolute princes of the folk, and governors with their staves; Authors skilled in composition, and forgers of epigrams with their spikes;
5 Inventori di melodie musicali e compositori di canti poetici.	5 Composers of melodious psalms, or discoursers on lyric themes;
6 Uomini ricchi, dotati di forza, che vivevano in pace nelle loro dimore.	6 Stalwart men, solidly established and at peace in their own estates--
7 Tutti costoro furono onorati dai loro contemporanei, furono un vanto ai loro tempi.	7 All these were glorious in their time, each illustrious in his day.
8 Di loro, alcuni lasciarono un nome, perché se ne celebrasse la lode.	8 Some of them have left behind a name and men recount their praiseworthy deeds;
9 Di altri non sussiste memoria, svanirono come se non fossero esistiti, furono come se non fossero mai stati, e così pure i loro figli dopo di loro.	9 But of others there is no memory, for when they ceased, they ceased. And they are as though they had not lived, they and their children after them.
10 Questi invece furono uomini di fede, e le loro opere giuste non sono dimenticate.	10 Yet these also were godly men whose virtues have not been forgotten;
11 Nella loro discendenza dimora una preziosa eredità: i loro posteri.	11 Their wealth remains in their families, their heritage with their descendants;
12 La loro discendenza resta fedele alle alleanze e grazie a loro anche i loro figli.	12 Through God's covenant with them their family endures, their posterity, for their sake.
13 Per sempre rimarrà la loro discendenza e la loro gloria non sarà offuscata.	13 And for all time their progeny will endure, their glory will never be blotted out;
14 I loro corpi furono sepolti in pace, ma il loro nome vive per sempre.	14 Their bodies are peacefully laid away, but their name lives on and on.
15 I popoli parlano della loro sapienza, l’assemblea ne proclama la lode.	15 At gatherings their wisdom is retold, and the assembly proclaims their praise.
16 Enoc piacque al Signore e fu rapito, esempio di conversione per tutte le generazioni.	16 [ENOCH walked with the LORD and was taken up, that succeeding generations might learn by his example.]
17 Noè fu trovato perfetto e giusto, al tempo dell’ira fu segno di riconciliazione; per mezzo suo un resto sopravvisse sulla terra, quando ci fu il diluvio.	17 NOAH, found just and perfect, renewed the race in the time of devastation. Because of his worth there were survivors, and with a sign to him the deluge ended;
18 Alleanze eterne furono stabilite con lui, perché con il diluvio non fosse distrutto ogni vivente.	18 A lasting agreement was made with him, that never should all flesh be destroyed.
19 Abramo fu grande padre di una moltitudine di nazioni, nessuno fu trovato simile a lui nella gloria.	19 ABRAHAM, father of many peoples, kept his glory without stain:
20 Egli custodì la legge dell’Altissimo, con lui entrò in alleanza. Stabilì l’alleanza nella propria carne e nella prova fu trovato degno di fede.	20 He observed the precepts of the Most High, and entered into an agreement with him; In his own flesh he incised the ordinance, and when tested he was found loyal.
21 Per questo Dio gli promise con giuramento di benedire le nazioni nella sua discendenza, di moltiplicarlo come la polvere della terra, di innalzare la sua discendenza come gli astri e di dar loro un’eredità da mare a mare e dal fiume fino all’estremità della terra.	21 For this reason, God promised him with an oath that in his descendants the nations would be blessed, That he would make him numerous as the grains of dust, and exalt his posterity like the stars; That he would give them an inheritance from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth.
22 Anche a Isacco fu fatta la stessa promessa grazie ad Abramo, suo padre.	22 And for ISAAC he renewed the same promise because of Abraham, his father. The covenant with all his forebears was confirmed, and the blessing rested upon the head of JACOB.
23 La benedizione di tutti gli uomini e la sua alleanza Dio fece posare sul capo di Giacobbe; lo confermò nelle sue benedizioni, gli diede il paese in eredità: lo divise in varie parti, assegnandole alle dodici tribù. Da lui fece sorgere un uomo mite, che incontrò favore agli occhi di tutti,	23 God acknowledged him as the first-born, and gave him his inheritance. He fixed the boundaries for his tribes, and their division into twelve.
