1 La sapienza forse non chiama e l’intelligenza non fa udire la sua voce?	1 Does not Wisdom call, and Understanding raise her voice?
2 In cima alle alture, lungo la via, nei crocicchi delle strade si apposta,	2 On the top of the heights along the road, at the crossroads she takes her stand;
3 presso le porte, all’ingresso della città, sulle soglie degli usci essa grida:	3 By the gates at the approaches of the city, in the entryways she cries aloud:
4 «A voi, uomini, io mi rivolgo, ai figli dell’uomo è diretta la mia voce.	4 "To you, O men, I call; my appeal is to the children of men.
5 Imparate, inesperti, la prudenza e voi, stolti, fatevi assennati.	5 You simple ones, gain resource, you fools, gain sense.
6 Ascoltate, perché dirò cose rilevanti, dalle mie labbra usciranno sentenze giuste,	6 "Give heed! for noble things I speak; honesty opens my lips.
7 perché la mia bocca proclama la verità e l’empietà è orrore per le mie labbra.	7 Yes, the truth my mouth recounts, but the wickedness my lips abhor.
8 Tutte le parole della mia bocca sono giuste, niente in esse è tortuoso o perverso;	8 Sincere are all the words of my mouth, no one of them is wily or crooked;
9 sono tutte chiare per chi le comprende e rette per chi possiede la scienza.	9 All of them are plain to the man of intelligence, and right to those who attain knowledge.
10 Accettate la mia istruzione e non l’argento, la scienza anziché l’oro fino,	10 Receive my instruction in preference to silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold.
11 perché la sapienza vale più delle perle e quanto si può desiderare non l’eguaglia.	11 (For Wisdom is better than corals, and no choice possessions can compare with her.)
12 Io, la sapienza, abito con la prudenza e possiedo scienza e riflessione.	12 "I, Wisdom, dwell with experience, and judicious knowledge I attain.
13 Temere il Signore è odiare il male: io detesto la superbia e l’arroganza, la cattiva condotta e la bocca perversa.	13 (The fear of the LORD is to hate evil;) Pride, arrogance, the evil way, and the perverse mouth I hate.
14 A me appartengono consiglio e successo, mia è l’intelligenza, mia è la potenza.	14 Mine are counsel and advice; Mine is strength; I am understanding.
15 Per mezzo mio regnano i re e i prìncipi promulgano giusti decreti;	15 By me kings reign, and lawgivers establish justice;
16 per mezzo mio i capi comandano e i grandi governano con giustizia.	16 By me princes govern, and nobles; all the rulers of earth.
17 Io amo coloro che mi amano, e quelli che mi cercano mi trovano.	17 "Those who love me I also love, and those who seek me find me.
18 Ricchezza e onore sono con me, sicuro benessere e giustizia.	18 With me are riches and honor, enduring wealth and prosperity.
19 Il mio frutto è migliore dell’oro più fino, il mio prodotto è migliore dell’argento pregiato.	19 My fruit is better than gold, yes, than pure gold, and my revenue than choice silver.
20 Sulla via della giustizia io cammino e per i sentieri dell’equità,	20 On the way of duty I walk, along the paths of justice,
21 per dotare di beni quanti mi amano e riempire i loro tesori.	21 Granting wealth to those who love me, and filling their treasuries.
22 Il Signore mi ha creato come inizio della sua attività, prima di ogni sua opera, all’origine.	22 "The LORD begot me, the first-born of his ways, the forerunner of his prodigies of long ago;
23 Dall’eternità sono stata formata, fin dal principio, dagli inizi della terra.	23 From of old I was poured forth, at the first, before the earth.
24 Quando non esistevano gli abissi, io fui generata, quando ancora non vi erano le sorgenti cariche d’acqua;	24 When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no fountains or springs of water;
25 prima che fossero fissate le basi dei monti, prima delle colline, io fui generata,	25 Before the mountains were settled into place, before the hills, I was brought forth;
26 quando ancora non aveva fatto la terra e i campi né le prime zolle del mondo.	26 While as yet the earth and the fields were not made, nor the first clods of the world.
27 Quando egli fissava i cieli, io ero là; quando tracciava un cerchio sull’abisso,	27 "When he established the heavens I was there, when he marked out the vault over the face of the deep;
28 quando condensava le nubi in alto, quando fissava le sorgenti dell’abisso,	28 When he made firm the skies above, when he fixed fast the foundations of the earth;
29 quando stabiliva al mare i suoi limiti, così che le acque non ne oltrepassassero i confini, quando disponeva le fondamenta della terra,	29 When he set for the sea its limit, so that the waters should not transgress his command;
30 io ero con lui come artefice ed ero la sua delizia ogni giorno: giocavo davanti a lui in ogni istante,	30 Then was I beside him as his craftsman, and I was his delight day by day, Playing before him all the while,
31 giocavo sul globo terrestre, ponendo le mie delizie tra i figli dell’uomo.	31 playing on the surface of his earth; and I found delight in the sons of men.
32 Ora, figli, ascoltatemi: beati quelli che seguono le mie vie!	32 "So now, O children, listen to me;
33 Ascoltate l’esortazione e siate saggi, non trascuratela!	33 instruction and wisdom do not reject! Happy the man who obeys me, and happy those who keep my ways,
34 Beato l’uomo che mi ascolta, vegliando ogni giorno alle mie porte, per custodire gli stipiti della mia soglia.	34 Happy the man watching daily at my gates, waiting at my doorposts;
35 Infatti, chi trova me trova la vita e ottiene il favore del Signore;	35 For he who finds me finds life, and wins favor from the LORD;
36 ma chi pecca contro di me fa male a se stesso; quanti mi odiano amano la morte».	36 But he who misses me harms himself; all who hate me love death."
