1 Chiama, dunque! Ti risponderà forse qualcuno? E a chi fra i santi ti rivolgerai?	1 Make your appeal then. Wil you find an answer? To which of the holy ones wil you turn?
2 Poiché allo stolto dà morte lo sdegno e la collera fa morire lo sciocco.	2 Resentment kil s the senseless, and anger brings death to the fool.
3 Io ho visto lo stolto metter radici, ma imputridire la sua dimora all'istante.	3 I have seen the senseless taking root, when a curse fel suddenly on his house.
4 I suoi figli sono lungi dal prosperare, sono oppressi alla porta, senza difensore;	4 His children are deprived of prop and stay, ruined at the gate, and no one to defend them;
5 l'affamato ne divora la messe e gente assetata ne succhia gli averi.	5 their harvest goes to feed the hungry, God snatches it from their mouths, and covetous people thirst fortheir possessions.
6 Non esce certo dalla polvere la sventura né germoglia dalla terra il dolore,	6 No, misery does not grow out of the soil, nor sorrow spring from the ground.
7 ma è l'uomo che genera pene, come le scintille volano in alto.	7 It is people who breed trouble for themselves as surely as eagles fly to the height.
8 Io, invece, mi rivolgerei a Dio e a Dio esporrei la mia causa:	8 If I were you, I should appeal to God and lay my case before him.
9 a lui, che fa cose grandi e incomprensibili, meraviglie senza numero,	9 His works are great, past al reckoning, marvels beyond al counting.
10 che dà la pioggia alla terra e manda le acque sulle campagne.	10 He sends down rain to the earth, pours down water on the fields.
11 Colloca gli umili in alto e gli afflitti solleva a prosperità;	11 If his wil is to raise up the downcast, or exalt the afflicted to the heights of prosperity,
12 rende vani i pensieri degli scaltri e le loro mani non ne compiono i disegni;	12 he frustrates the plans of the artful so that they cannot succeed in their intrigues.
13 coglie di sorpresa i saggi nella loro astuzia e manda in rovina il consiglio degli scaltri.	13 He traps the crafty in the snare of their own trickery, throws the plans of the cunning into disarray.
14 Di giorno incappano nel buio e brancolano in pieno sole come di notte,	14 In daylight they come up against darkness, and grope their way as if noon were night.
15 mentre egli salva dalla loro spada l'oppresso, e il meschino dalla mano del prepotente.	15 He rescues the bankrupt from their jaws, and the needy from the grasp of the mighty.
16 C'è speranza per il misero e l'ingiustizia chiude la bocca.	16 Hope springs afresh for the weak, and wickedness must shut its mouth.
17 Felice l'uomo, che è corretto da Dio: perciò tu non sdegnare la correzione dell'Onnipotente,	17 Blessed are those whom God corrects! Do not then scorn the lesson of Shaddai!
18 perché egli fa la piaga e la fascia, ferisce e la sua mano risana.	18 For he who wounds is he who soothes the sore, and the hand that hurts is the hand that heals.
19 Da sei tribolazioni ti libererà e alla settima non ti toccherà il male;	19 Six times he wil deliver you from sorrow, and the seventh time, evil wil not touch you.
20 nella carestia ti scamperà dalla morte e in guerra dal colpo della spada;	20 In time of famine, he wil save you from death, and in wartime from the stroke of the sword.
21 sarai al riparo dal flagello della lingua, né temerai quando giunge la rovina.	21 You will be safe from the lash of the tongue, unafraid at the approach of the despoiler.
22 Della rovina e della fame ti riderai né temerai le bestie selvatiche;	22 You will laugh at drought and frost, and have no fear of the beasts of the earth.
23 con le pietre del campo avrai un patto e le bestie selvatiche saranno in pace con te.	23 You will have a pact with the stones of the field, and live in amity with wild beasts.
24 Conoscerai la prosperità della tua tenda, visiterai la tua proprietà e non sarai deluso.	24 You will know that your tent is secure, and your sheepfold unharmed when you inspect it.
25 Vedrai, numerosa, la prole, i tuoi rampolli come l'erba dei prati.	25 You will see your descendants multiply, your offspring grow like the grass in the fields.
26 Te ne andrai alla tomba in piena maturità, come si ammucchia il grano a suo tempo.	26 At a ripe age you wil go to the grave, like a wheatsheaf stacked in due season.
27 Ecco, questo abbiamo osservato: è così. Ascoltalo e sappilo per tuo bene.	27 Al this we have observed and it is so! Heed it, you wil be the wiser for it!
