| 3 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Er. | 3 And she conceived, and bore a son, and called his name Her. |
| 4 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Onan. | 4 And conceiving again, she bore a son, and called him Onan. |
| 5 Ancora un’altra volta partorì un figlio e lo chiamò Shela. Ora, essa si trovava in Chezib, quando lo partorì. | 5 She bore also a third: whom she called Sela. after whose birth, she ceased to bear any more. |
| 6 Giuda prese per Er suo primogenito una moglie che si chiamava Tamar. | 6 And Juda took a wife for Her his firstborn, whose name was Thamar. |
| 7 Ma Er primogenito di Giuda si rese spiacevole agli occhi di Jahve e Jahve lo fece morire. | 7 And Her, the firstborn of Juda, was wicked in the sight of the Lord: and was slain by him. |
| 8 Allora Giuda disse a Onan: « Unisciti alla moglie di tuo fratello, compi verso di lei il dovere di cognato e suscita una posterità per tuo fratello ». | 8 Juda, therefore add to Onan his son: Go in to thy brother's wife and marry her, that thou mayst raise seed to thy brother. |
| 9 Ma Onan, sapendo che la prole non sarebbe stata sua, quando si univa alla moglie di suo fratello disperdeva per terra per non dare posterità al fratello. | 9 He knowing that the children should not be his, when he went in to his brother's wife, spilled his seed upon the ground, lest children should be born in his brother's name. |
| 10 Quanto egli fece dispiacque agli occhi di Jahve che fece morire anche lui. | 10 And therefore the Lord slew him, because he did a detestable thing. |
| 11 Allora Giuda disse a Tamar sua nuora: « Ritorna alla casa di tuo padre in stato di vedovanza, finchè Shela mio figlio non sarà adulto ». Perchè pensava: « Non muoia anche questo come i suoi fratelli! ». Così Tamar se andò e ritornò alla casa di suo padre. | 11 Wherefore Juda said to Thamar his daughter in law: Remain a widow in thy father's house, till Sela my son grow up: for he was afraid lest he also might die, as his brethren did. She went her way and dwelt in her father's house. |
| 12 Passarono molti giorni e morì la figlia di Shua, moglie di Giuda.
