2 Filii Iapheth: Gomer et Magog et Madai et Iavan et Thubal et Mosoch et Thiras. | 2 Japheth's sons: Gomer, Magog, the Medes, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, Tiras. |
3 Porro filii Gomer: Aschenez et Riphath et Thogorma. | 3 Gomer's sons: Ashkenaz, Riphath, Togarmah. |
4 Filii autem Iavan: Elisa et Tharsis, Cetthim et Rodanim. | 4 Javan's sons: Elishah, Tarshish, the Kittim, the Dananites. |
5 Ab his divisae sunt insulae gentium in regionibus suis, unusquisque secundum linguam suam et familias suas in nationibus suis.
| 5 From these came the dispersal to the islands of the nations. These were Japheth's sons, in theirrespective countries, each with its own language, by clan and nation. |
6 Filii autem Cham: Chus et Mesraim et Phut et Chanaan. | 6 Ham's sons: Cush, Mizraim, Put, Canaan. |
7 Filii Chus: Saba et Hevila et Sabatha et Regma et Sabathacha. Filii Regma: Saba et Dedan. | 7 Cush's sons: Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, Sabteca. Raamah's sons: Sheba, Dedan. |
8 Porro Chus genuit Nemrod: ipse coepit esse potens in terra
| 8 Cush fathered Nimrod who was the first potentate on earth. |
9 et erat robustus venator coram Domino. Ob hoc exivit proverbium: “Quasi Nemrod robustus venator coram Domino”. | 9 He was a mighty hunter in the eyes of Yahweh, hence the saying, 'Like Nimrod, a mighty hunter in theeyes of Yahweh'. |

11 De terra illa egressus est in Assyriam et aedificavit Nineven et Rohobothir et Chale, | 11 From this country came Asshur, and he built Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah, |
12 Resen quoque inter Nineven et Chale; haec est civitas magna. | 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah (this being the capital). |
