1 Ogni amico dirà: « Io ho stretto teco amicizia ». Ma ci son degli amici di nome soltanto. Non c'è in questo uno strazio che s'avvicina alla morte?	1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.
2 Il compagno, l'amico si cambiano in nemici.	2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?
3 O presunzione scelleratissima, donde sei uscita a ricoprir la terra di tal malvagità e perfidia?	3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"
4 Un amico gode coll'amico nell'allegria, e sarà contro di lui nel tempo della tribolazione.	4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.
5 Un amico s'affligge coll'amico a causa del suo ventre, e imbraccia lo scudo contro il nemico.	5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.
6 Non t'esca mai dal cuore il tuo amico, e non lo dimenticare in mezzo alle tue ricchezze.	6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.
7 Non prender consiglio da chi t'insidia, nascondi i tuoi disegni a chi t'invidia.	7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;
8 Ogni consigliere dà il suo consiglio, ma v'è chi lo dà a suo tornaconto.	8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?
9 Guardati dal consigliere: prima rifletti se ha bisogno di qualche cosa, perchè anche lui vi penserà dentro di sè;	9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.
10 che forse ti ficcherà un piuolo in terra, e ti dirà:	10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.
11 « La tua strada è buona » e ti starà di faccia a vedere quel che avvenga.	11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.
12 Tratta di santità coll'uomo senza religione, di giustizia coll'iniquo, colla donna tratta della sua emula, col pauroso di guerra, col mercante tratta di trasporti, con chi vuol comprare di vendita, coll'invidioso di ringraziamenti,	12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.
13 coll'empio di pietà, col disonesto di onestà, col lavoratore di campagna di qualunque lavoro,	13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?
14 col mercenario annuale del lavoro dell'annata, col servo pigro di grande lavoro. Non dar retta a costoro, qualunque consiglio diano;	14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.
15 ma frequenta l'uomo pio, chiunque tu avrai conosciuto timorato di Dio,	15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.
16 e che ha un'anima conforme alla tua, e che, se tu vacillassi nelle tenebre, abbia compassione di te. 1	16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.
17 Formati dentro di te un cuore di buon consiglio, perchè non puoi averne un altro migliore di quello.	17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:
18 L'anima d'un uomo santo qualche volta fa conoscere il vero meglio di sette sentinelle che stanno alle vedette in luogo elevato.	18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.
19 Ma in tutte queste cose prega l'Altissimo, affinchè Egli guidi i tuoi passi nella verità.	19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.
20 La parola di verità preceda ogni tua opera, e il consiglio sicuro ogni tua azione.	20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.
21 La parola cattiva altera il cuore, dal quale nascono quattro cose: il bene e il male, la vita e la morte, cose che son sempre in potere della lingua. Vi sono degli uomini abili a istruire molti e buoni a nulla per l'anima propria.	21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;
22 L'uomo prudente istruisce molti e dà consolazione alla sua anima.	22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:
23 Chi affetta sapienza si rende odioso, e in ogni cosa resterà a mani vuote.	23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.
24 Il Signore non gli ha dato la grazia, perchè è privo d'ogni sapienza.	24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;
25 E' sapiente chi è sapiente per l'anima propria, e i frutti della sua prudenza son degni di lode.	25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.
26 L'uomo sapiente istruisce il suo popolo, e i frutti del suo sapere sono duraturi.	26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;
27 L'uomo sapiente sarà ricolmo di benedizioni, e chiunque lo vede gli darà lode.	27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.
28 La vita dell'uomo ha i giorni contati, ma i giorni d'Israele sono senza numero.	28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,
29 Il sapiente acquisterà onore in mezzo al popolo, e il suo nome vivrà in eterno.	29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.
30 Figlio, nel tuo vitto metti a prova te stesso, se una cosa è nociva, non le dar potere su di te,	30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.
31 perchè non tutto giova a tutti, e non a tutte le persone piace ogni cosa.
32 Guardati dall'avidità nei banchetti e non ti gettare sopra tutte le vivande.
33 Perchè dal molto mangiare verranno le malattie, e l'avidità conduce al la colica.
34 Molti son morti per l'intemperanza; chi è sobrio prolungherà la sua vita.
