1 Chi ama il proprio figlio usa spesso la frusta per lui, per gioire di lui alla fine.	1 He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his joy when he grows up.
2 Chi corregge il proprio figlio ne trarrà vantaggio e se ne potrà vantare con i suoi conoscenti.	2 He who disciplines his son will benefit from him, and boast of him among his intimates.
3 Chi istruisce il proprio figlio rende geloso il nemico e davanti agli amici si rallegra.	3 He who educates his son makes his enemy jealous, and shows his delight in him among his friends.
4 Muore il padre? È come se non morisse, perché dopo di sé lascia uno che gli è simile.	4 At the father's death, he will seem not dead, since he leaves after him one like himself,
5 Durante la vita egli gioisce nel contemplarlo, in punto di morte non prova dolore.	5 Whom he looks upon through life with joy, and even in death, without regret:
6 Per i nemici lascia un vendicatore, per gli amici uno che sa ricompensarli.	6 The avenger he leaves against his foes, and the one to repay his friends with kindness.
7 Chi accarezza un figlio ne fascerà poi le ferite, a ogni grido il suo cuore sarà sconvolto.	7 He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will quake inwardly at every outcry.
8 Un cavallo non domato diventa caparbio, un figlio lasciato a se stesso diventa testardo.	8 A colt untamed turns out stubborn; a son left to himself grows up unruly.
9 Vezzeggia il figlio ed egli ti riserverà delle sorprese, scherza con lui, ti procurerà dispiaceri.	9 Pamper your child and he will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.
10 Non ridere con lui per non doverti rattristare, e non debba alla fine digrignare i denti.	10 Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when finally your teeth are clenched in remorse.
11 Non concedergli libertà in gioventù, non prendere alla leggera i suoi errori.	11 Give him not his own way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies.
12 Piegagli il collo quando è giovane, e battigli i fianchi finché è fanciullo, perché poi intestardito non ti disobbedisca e tu ne abbia un profondo dolore.	12 Bend him to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you disconsolate.
13 Educa tuo figlio e prenditi cura di lui, così non dovrai sopportare la sua insolenza.	13 Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his folly humiliate you.
14 Meglio un povero di aspetto sano e forte che un ricco malato nel suo corpo.	14 Better a poor man strong and robust, than a rich man with wasted frame.
15 Salute e vigore valgono più di tutto l’oro, un corpo robusto più di un’immensa fortuna.	15 More precious than gold is health and well-being, contentment of spirit than coral.
16 Non c’è ricchezza superiore alla salute del corpo e non c’è felicità più grande della gioia del cuore.	16 No treasure greater than a healthy body; no happiness, than a joyful heart!
17 Meglio la morte che una vita amara, il riposo eterno che una malattia cronica.	17 Preferable is death to a bitter life, unending sleep to constant illness.
18 Cose buone versate su una bocca chiusa sono come cibi deposti sopra una tomba.	18 Dainties set before one who cannot eat are like the offerings placed before a tomb.
19 A che serve all’idolo l’offerta di frutti? Esso non mangia né sente il profumo; così è per colui che il Signore perséguita.	19 What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor smell?
20 Egli guarda con gli occhi e geme, come un eunuco che abbraccia una vergine e geme: così è per colui che fa giustizia con violenza.	20 So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the good things his eyes behold!
21 Non darti in balìa della tristezza e non tormentarti con i tuoi pensieri.	21 Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;
22 La gioia del cuore è la vita dell’uomo, l’allegria dell’uomo è lunga vita.	22 Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.
23 Distraiti e consola il tuo cuore, tieni lontana la profonda tristezza, perché la tristezza ha rovinato molti e in essa non c’è alcun vantaggio.	23 Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you; For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.
24 Gelosia e ira accorciano i giorni, le preoccupazioni anticipano la vecchiaia.	24 Envy and anger shorten one's life, worry brings on premature old age.
25 Un cuore limpido e sereno si accontenta dei cibi e gusta tutto quello che mangia.	25 One who is cheerful and gay while at table benefits from his food.
