1 All’uomo appartengono i progetti del cuore, ma dal Signore viene la risposta della lingua.	1 It is for man to prepare the soul, and for the Lord to govern the tongue.
2 Agli occhi dell’uomo tutte le sue opere sembrano pure, ma chi scruta gli spiriti è il Signore.	2 All the ways of a man are open to his eyes; the Lord is the one who weighs spirits.
3 Affida al Signore le tue opere e i tuoi progetti avranno efficacia.	3 Open your works to the Lord, and your intentions will be set in order.
4 Il Signore ha fatto ogni cosa per il suo fine e anche il malvagio per il giorno della sventura.	4 The Lord has wrought all things because of himself. Likewise the impious is for the evil day.
5 Il Signore ha in orrore ogni cuore superbo, certamente non resterà impunito.	5 All the arrogant are an abomination to the Lord. Even if hand will be joined to hand, he is not innocent. The beginning of a good way is to do justice. And this is more acceptable with God than to immolate sacrifices.
6 Con la bontà e la fedeltà si espia la colpa, ma con il timore del Signore si evita il male.	6 By mercy and truth, iniquity is redeemed. And by the fear of the Lord, one turns away from evil.
7 Se il Signore si compiace della condotta di un uomo, lo riconcilia anche con i suoi nemici.	7 When the ways of man will please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.
8 È meglio avere poco con onestà che molte rendite senza giustizia.	8 Better is a little with justice, than many fruits with iniquity.
9 Il cuore dell’uomo elabora progetti, ma è il Signore che rende saldi i suoi passi.	9 The heart of man disposes his way. But it is for Lord to direct his steps.
10 L’oracolo è sulle labbra del re, in giudizio la sua bocca non sbaglia.	10 Foreknowledge is in the lips of the king. His mouth shall not err in judgment.
11 La stadera e le bilance giuste appartengono al Signore, sono opera sua tutti i pesi del sacchetto.	11 Weights and scales are judgments of the Lord. And all the stones in the bag are his work.
12 È un orrore per i re commettere un’azione iniqua, poiché il trono sta saldo con la giustizia.	12 Those who act impiously are abominable to the king. For the throne is made firm by justice.
13 Il re si compiace di chi dice la verità, egli ama chi parla con rettitudine.	13 Just lips are the will of kings. He who speaks honestly shall be loved.
14 L’ira del re è messaggera di morte, ma il saggio la placherà.	14 The indignation of a king is a herald of death. And the wise man will appease it.
15 Se il volto del re è luminoso, c’è la vita: il suo favore è come pioggia di primavera.	15 In the cheerfulness of the king’s countenance, there is life. And his clemency is like belated rain.
16 Possedere la sapienza è molto meglio dell’oro, acquisire l’intelligenza è preferibile all’argento.	16 Possess wisdom, for it is better than gold. And acquire prudence, for it is more precious than silver.
17 La strada degli uomini retti è evitare il male; conserva la vita chi controlla la sua condotta.	17 The path of the just turns away from evils. He who guards his soul preserves his way.
18 Prima della rovina viene l’orgoglio e prima della caduta c’è l’arroganza.	18 Arrogance precedes destruction. And the spirit is exalted before a fall.
19 È meglio essere umili con i poveri che spartire la preda con i superbi.	19 It is better to be humbled with the meek, than to divide spoils with the arrogant.
20 Chi è prudente nel parlare troverà il bene, ma chi confida nel Signore è beato.	20 The learned in word shall find good things. And whoever hopes in the Lord is blessed.
21 Chi è saggio di cuore è ritenuto intelligente; il linguaggio dolce aumenta la dottrina.	21 Whoever is wise in heart shall be called prudent. And whoever is sweet in eloquence shall attain to what is greater.
22 Fonte di vita è il senno per chi lo possiede, ma castigo degli stolti è la stoltezza.	22 Learning is a fountain of life to one who possesses it. The doctrine of the foolish is senseless.
23 Il cuore del saggio rende assennata la sua bocca e sulle sue labbra fa crescere la dottrina.	23 The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth and add grace to his lips.
24 Favo di miele sono le parole gentili, dolce per il palato e medicina per le ossa.	24 Careful words are a honeycomb: sweet to the soul and healthful to the bones.
25 C’è una via che sembra diritta per l’uomo, ma alla fine conduce su sentieri di morte.	25 There is a way which seems right to a man, and its end result leads to death.
26 La brama fa lavorare chi lavora, è la sua bocca che lo sprona.	26 The soul of the laborer labors for himself, because his mouth has driven him to it.
27 L’uomo iniquo ordisce la sciagura, sulle sue labbra c’è come un fuoco ardente.	27 The impious man digs up evil, and in his lips is a burning fire.
28 L’uomo perverso provoca litigi, chi calunnia divide gli amici.	28 A perverse man stirs up lawsuits. And one who is verbose divides leaders.
29 L’uomo violento inganna il prossimo e lo spinge per una via non buona.	29 A man of iniquity entices his friend, and he leads him along a way that is not good.
30 Chi socchiude gli occhi medita inganni, chi stringe le labbra ha già commesso il male.	30 Whoever, with astonished eyes, thinks up depravities, biting his lips, accomplishes evil.
31 Diadema splendido è la canizie, ed essa si trova sulla via della giustizia.	31 Old age is a crown of dignity, when it is found in the ways of justice.
32 È meglio la pazienza che la forza di un eroe, chi domina se stesso vale più di chi conquista una città.	32 A patient man is better than a strong one. And whoever rules his soul is better than one who assaults cities.
33 Nel cavo della veste si getta la sorte, ma la decisione dipende tutta dal Signore.	33 Lots are cast into the lap, but they are tempered by the Lord.
