1 Proverbi di Salomone, figlio di Davide, re d’Israele,	1 The parables of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel,
2 per conoscere la sapienza e l’istruzione, per capire i detti intelligenti,	2 in order to know wisdom and discipline,
3 per acquistare una saggia educazione, equità, giustizia e rettitudine,	3 to understand words of prudence, and to accept the instruction of doctrine, justice and judgment, and equity,
4 per rendere accorti gli inesperti e dare ai giovani conoscenza e riflessione.	4 so as to give discernment to little ones, knowledge and understanding to adolescents.
5 Il saggio ascolti e accrescerà il sapere, e chi è avveduto acquisterà destrezza,	5 By listening, the wise shall become wiser and the intelligent shall possess governments.
6 per comprendere proverbi e allegorie, le massime dei saggi e i loro enigmi.	6 He shall turn his soul to a parable and to its interpretation, to the words of the wise and their enigmas.
7 Il timore del Signore è principio della scienza; gli stolti disprezzano la sapienza e l’istruzione.	7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. The foolish despise wisdom as well as doctrine.
8 Ascolta, figlio mio, l’istruzione di tuo padre e non disprezzare l’insegnamento di tua madre,	8 Listen, my son, to the discipline of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother,
9 perché saranno corona graziosa sul tuo capo e monili per il tuo collo.	9 so that grace may be added to your head and a collar to your neck.
10 Figlio mio, se i malvagi ti vogliono sedurre, tu non acconsentire!	10 My son, if sinners should entice you, do not consent to them.
11 Se ti dicono: «Vieni con noi, complottiamo per spargere sangue, insidiamo senza motivo l’innocente,	11 If they should say: “Come with us. We will lie in wait for blood. We will lay traps against the innocent, without cause.
12 inghiottiamoli vivi come fa il regno dei morti, interi, come coloro che scendono nella fossa;	12 Let us swallow him alive, like Hell, and whole, like one descending into the pit.
13 troveremo ogni specie di beni preziosi, riempiremo di bottino le nostre case,	13 We will discover every precious substance. We will fill our houses with spoils.
14 tu tirerai a sorte la tua parte insieme con noi, una sola borsa avremo in comune»,	14 Cast your lot with us. One purse will be for us all.”
15 figlio mio, non andare per la loro strada, tieniti lontano dai loro sentieri!	15 My son, do not walk with them. Preclude your feet from their paths.
16 I loro passi infatti corrono verso il male e si affrettano a spargere sangue.	16 For their feet rush to evil, and they hurry to shed blood.
17 Invano si tende la rete sotto gli occhi di ogni sorta di uccelli.	17 But a net is thrown in vain before the eyes of those who have wings.
18 Ma costoro complottano contro il proprio sangue, pongono agguati contro se stessi.	18 Likewise, they lie in ambush against their own blood, and they undertake deceits against their own souls.
19 Tale è la fine di chi è avido di guadagno; la cupidigia toglie di mezzo colui che ne è dominato.	19 Thus, the ways of all those who are greedy seize the souls of those who possess.
20 La sapienza grida per le strade, nelle piazze fa udire la voce;	20 Wisdom forewarns far and wide; she bestows her voice in the streets.
21 nei clamori della città essa chiama, pronuncia i suoi detti alle porte della città:	21 She cries out at the head of crowds; at the entrance of the gates of the city, she offers her words, saying:
22 «Fino a quando, o inesperti, amerete l’inesperienza e gli spavaldi si compiaceranno delle loro spavalderie e gli stolti avranno in odio la scienza?	22 “Little ones, how long will you choose to be childish, and how long will the foolish desire what is harmful to themselves, and how long will the imprudent hate knowledge?
23 Tornate alle mie esortazioni: ecco, io effonderò il mio spirito su di voi e vi manifesterò le mie parole.	23 Be converted by my correction. Lo, I will offer my spirit to you, and I will reveal my words to you.
24 Perché vi ho chiamati ma avete rifiutato, ho steso la mano e nessuno se ne è accorto.	24 For I called, and you refused. I extended my hand, and there was no one who watched.
25 Avete trascurato ogni mio consiglio e i miei rimproveri non li avete accolti;	25 You have despised all my counsels, and you have neglected my rebukes.
26 anch’io riderò delle vostre sventure, mi farò beffe quando su di voi verrà la paura,	26 Similarly, I will ridicule you at your demise, and I will mock you, when that which you feared shall overcome you.
27 quando come una tempesta vi piomberà addosso il terrore, quando la disgrazia vi raggiungerà come un uragano, quando vi colpiranno angoscia e tribolazione.	27 When sudden calamity rushes upon you, and your demise advances like a tempest, when tribulation and anguish overcome you,
28 Allora mi invocheranno, ma io non risponderò, mi cercheranno, ma non mi troveranno.	28 then they will call to me, and I will not heed, they will arise in the morning, and not find me.
29 Perché hanno odiato la sapienza e non hanno preferito il timore del Signore,	29 For they held hatred for discipline, and they would not accept the fear of the Lord;
30 non hanno accettato il mio consiglio e hanno disprezzato ogni mio rimprovero;	30 they would not consent to my counsel, but they detracted from all of my corrections.
31 mangeranno perciò il frutto della loro condotta e si sazieranno delle loro trame.	31 Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way, and they shall have their fill of their own counsels.
32 Sì, lo smarrimento degli inesperti li ucciderà e la spensieratezza degli sciocchi li farà perire;	32 The loathing of the little ones shall destroy them, and the prosperity of the foolish shall perish them.
33 ma chi ascolta me vivrà in pace e sarà sicuro senza temere alcun male».	33 But whoever will listen to me shall rest without terror, and shall have full enjoyment of abundance, without fear of evils.”
