1 L'uomo, nato di donna, breve di giorni e sazio di inquietudine,	1 Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.
2 come un fiore spunta e avvizzisce, fugge come l'ombra e mai si ferma.	2 He cometh forth like a flower, and is cut down: he fleeth also as a shadow, and continueth not.
3 Tu, sopra un tal essere tieni aperti i tuoi occhi e lo chiami a giudizio presso di te?	3 And dost thou open thine eyes upon such an one, and bringest me into judgment with thee?
4 Chi può trarre il puro dall'immondo? Nessuno.	4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.
5 Se i suoi giorni sono contati, se il numero dei suoi mesi dipende da te, se hai fissato un termine che non può oltrepassare,	5 Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass;
6 distogli lo sguardo da lui e lascialo stare finché abbia compiuto, come un salariato, la sua giornata!	6 Turn from him, that he may rest, till he shall accomplish, as an hireling, his day.
7 Poiché anche per l'albero c'è speranza: se viene tagliato, ancora ributta e i suoi germogli non cessano di crescere;	7 For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again, and that the tender branch thereof will not cease.
8 se sotto terra invecchia la sua radice e al suolo muore il suo tronco,	8 Though the root thereof wax old in the earth, and the stock thereof die in the ground;
9 al sentore dell'acqua rigermoglia e mette rami come nuova pianta.	9 Yet through the scent of water it will bud, and bring forth boughs like a plant.
10 L'uomo invece, se muore, giace inerte, quando il mortale spira, dov'è?	10 But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?
11 Potranno sparire le acque del mare e i fiumi prosciugarsi e disseccarsi,	11 As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
12 ma l'uomo che giace più non s'alzerà, finché durano i cieli non si sveglierà, né più si desterà dal suo sonno.	12 So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.
13 Oh, se tu volessi nascondermi nella tomba, occultarmi, finché sarà passata la tua ira, fissarmi un termine e poi ricordarti di me!	13 O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 Se l'uomo che muore potesse rivivere, aspetterei tutti i giorni della mia milizia finché arrivi per me l'ora del cambio!	14 If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
15 Mi chiameresti e io risponderei, l'opera delle tue mani tu brameresti.	15 Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.
16 Mentre ora tu conti i miei passi non spieresti più il mio peccato:	16 For now thou numberest my steps: dost thou not watch over my sin?
17 in un sacchetto, chiuso, sarebbe il mio misfatto e tu cancelleresti la mia colpa.	17 My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou sewest up mine iniquity.
18 Ohimè! come un monte finisce in una frana e come una rupe si stacca dal suo posto,	18 And surely the mountain falling cometh to nought, and the rock is removed out of his place.
19 e le acque consumano le pietre, le alluvioni portano via il terreno: così tu annienti la speranza dell'uomo.	19 The waters wear the stones: thou washest away the things which grow out of the dust of the earth; and thou destroyest the hope of man.
20 Tu lo abbatti per sempre ed egli se ne va, tu sfiguri il suo volto e lo scacci.	20 Thou prevailest for ever against him, and he passeth: thou changest his countenance, and sendest him away.
21 Siano pure onorati i suoi figli, non lo sa; siano disprezzati, lo ignora!	21 His sons come to honour, and he knoweth it not; and they are brought low, but he perceiveth it not of them.
22 Soltanto i suoi dolori egli sente e piange sopra di sé.	22 But his flesh upon him shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
