| 4 Tu sai bene che da sempre, da quando l’uomo fu messo sulla terra, | 4 Do you not know, that since time began and human beings were set on the earth, |
| 5 il trionfo dei malvagi è breve e la gioia dell’empio dura un momento. | 5 the triumph of the wicked has always been brief, and the sinner's gladness has never lasted long? |
| 6 Anche se la sua boria sale fino al cielo e il suo capo tocca le nubi, | 6 Towering to the sky he may have been, his head touching the clouds; |

| 11 Le sue ossa erano piene di giovinezza e giacciono con lui nella polvere. | 11 His bones used to be ful of youthful vigour: and there it lies, in the dust with him, now! |
| 12 Se il male è dolce alla sua bocca, se lo nasconde sotto la lingua, | 12 Evil was sweet to his mouth, he would shelter it under his tongue; |
| 13 se lo assapora e non lo inghiotte e se lo tiene in mezzo al palato, | 13 cultivating it careful y, he would let it linger on his palate. |

| 15 Rivomita le ricchezze divorate: Dio gliele ricaccia dal ventre. | 15 Now he has to vomit up the wealth that he has swal owed, God makes him disgorge it. |
| 16 Succhiava un veleno d’aspide e lo uccide la lingua della vipera. | 16 He used to suck vipers' venom, and the tongue of the adder kills him. |
| 17 Non vedrà più ruscelli d’olio fresco nè torrenti di miele e di burro; | 17 No more will he know the streams of oil or the torrents of honey and cream. |
| 18 restituisce gli acquisti senza gustarli e non gode del frutto del suo commercio, | 18 When he gives back his winnings, his cheerfulness wil fade, and the satisfied air he had whenbusiness was thriving. |
| 19 poichè egli ha oppresso con violenza i poveri, ha saccheggiato una casa invece di fabbricarla; | 19 Since he once destroyed the huts of the poor, plundering houses instead of building them up, |
| 20 Poichè il suo ventre non ha avuto riposo, al suo appetito non poteva sottrarsi, | 20 since his avarice could never be satisfied, now al his hoarding will not save him; |
| 21 niente sfuggiva alla sua voracità: ecco perchè non dura la sua fortuna. | 21 since nothing could escape his greed, his prosperity wil not last. |
| 22 Nel colmo dell’abbondanza si trova in strettezze, gli sopravviene ogni sorta di sciagura. | 22 When he has everything he needs, want wil seize him, and misery wil light on him with all its force. |
| 23 Mentre sta riempiendosi il ventre, Dio gli manda la fiamma del suo sdegno, gli fa piovere addosso le sue frecce. | 23 On him God looses al his burning wrath, hurling against his flesh a hail of arrows. |
| 24 Se sfugge a un’arma di ferro, lo trafigge un arco di bronzo; | 24 If he escapes the weapons of iron, the bow of bronze wil transfix him. |
| 25 passa la freccia e gli esce dalla schiena, la lucida lama dal fegato: terrori di morte lo assalgono. | 25 Out of his back sticks an arrow, from his gal a shining point. The terrors advance on him, |
| 26 Tutte le tenebre sono riservate a lui, un fuoco non acceso da uomo lo consuma; perirà ciò che resta nella sua tenda. | 26 all the hidden darknesses are waiting to carry him off. A fire unlit by human hand devours him, andconsumes what is left in his tent. |
| 27 il cielo manifesta la sua colpa e la terra insorge contro di lui. | 27 The heavens lay bare his iniquity, and the earth rises up against him. |
| 28 Una fiumana si rovescerà sulla sua casa, acque che scorrono nel giorno dell’ira. | 28 The income of his house pours away, like the torrents, on the day of retribution. |
| 29 Questa è la sorte serbata all’empio da Dio e tale il destino che riceve da Dio! ». | 29 Such is the fate God reserves for the wicked, the inheritance he assigns to the accursed! |
