1 Giacchè molti si sono sforzati di stendere il racconto delle cose avvenute tra noi:	1 Seeing that many others have undertaken to draw up accounts of the events that have reached theirfulfilment among us,
2 Come riferirono a noi quelli, che sin da pincipio le videro, e furono ministri della parola:	2 as these were handed down to us by those who from the outset were eyewitnesses and ministers of theword,
3 E paruto anche a me, dopo aver diligentemente rinvergato dall'origine il tutto, di scriverlo a te a parte a parte, o Teofilo prestantissimo,	3 I in my turn, after careful y going over the whole story from the beginning, have decided to write anordered account for you, Theophilus,
4 Affinchè tu riconosca la verità delle cose, che a te sono state insegnate.	4 so that your Excel ency may learn how wel founded the teaching is that you have received.
5 Bravi al tempo di Erode, re di Giudea, un sacerdote, per nome Zaccaria, della classe di Abia; e la moglie di lui delle figliuole di Aronne, e si chiamava Elisabetta.	5 In the days of King Herod of Judaea there lived a priest cal ed Zechariah who belonged to the Abijahsection of the priesthood, and he had a wife, Elizabeth by name, who was a descendant of Aaron.
6 Ed erano ambedue giusti dinanzi a Dio, camminando irreprensibili in tutti i comandamenti, e nelle leggi del Signore.	6 Both were upright in the sight of God and impeccably carried out al the commandments andobservances of the Lord.
7 E non avevano figliuolo, per essere Elisabetta sterile, e tutti due di età avanzata.	7 But they were childless: Elizabeth was barren and they were both advanced in years.
8 Or avvenne, che, mentre faceva la funzione di sacerdote dinanzi a Dio nell'ordine del suo turno,	8 Now it happened that it was the turn of his section to serve, and he was exercising his priestly officebefore God
9 Secondo la consuetudine del sacerdozio, toccogli in sorte di entrare nel tempio del Signore a offerirvi l'incenso:	9 when it fell to him by lot, as the priestly custom was, to enter the Lord's sanctuary and burn incensethere.
10 E tutta la turba del popolo orava di fuori nell'ora dell'incenso.	10 And at the hour of incense all the people were outside, praying.
11 E apparve a lui l'Angelo del Signore, stante alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso.	11 Then there appeared to him the angel of the Lord, standing on the right of the altar of incense.
12 E Zaccaria al vederlo turbossi, e il timore lo soprapprese.	12 The sight disturbed Zechariah and he was overcome with fear.
13 Ma l'Angelo gli disse: Non temere, o Zaccaria, perché è stata esaudita la tua orazione: e la tua moglie Elisabetta ti partorirà un figliuolo; e gli porrai nome Giovanni:	13 But the angel said to him, 'Zechariah, do not be afraid, for your prayer has been heard. Your wifeElizabeth is to bear you a son and you shal name him John.
14 E sarà a te di allegrezza, e di giubbilo: e molti si rallegreranno per la nascita di lui:	14 He will be your joy and delight and many will rejoice at his birth,
15 Imperocché egli sarà grande nel cospetto del Signore: non berrà né vino, né sicera: e sarà ripieno di Spirito santo sin dall'utero di sua madre:	15 for he wil be great in the sight of the Lord; he must drink no wine, no strong drink; even from hismother's womb he wil be filled with the Holy Spirit,
16 E convertirà molti dei figliuoli d'Israelle al Signore Dio loro.	16 and he wil bring back many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.
17 Ed egli precederà davanti a lui con lo spirito, e con la virtù di Elia: per rivolgere i cuori de' padri verso i loro figliuoli, e gl'increduli alla sapienza dei giusti, per preparare al Signore un popolo perfetto.	17 With the spirit and power of Elijah, he wil go before him to reconcile fathers to their children and thedisobedient to the good sense of the upright, preparing for the Lord a people fit for him.'
18 E Zaccaria disse all'Angelo: Come comprenderò io tal cosa? Imperocché io son vecchio, e la moglie mia è avanzata in età.	18 Zechariah said to the angel, 'How can I know this? I am an old man and my wife is getting on in years.'
19 E l'Angelo gli rispose, e disse: Io sono Gabriele, che sto nel cospetto d'Iddio: e sono stato mandato a parlarti, e recarti questa buona nuova.	19 The angel replied, 'I am Gabriel, who stand in God's presence, and I have been sent to speak to youand bring you this good news.
20 Ed ecco, che sarai mutolo, e non potrai far parola sino al giorno, che questo succeda, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole, le quali si adempiranno a suo tempo.	20 Look! Since you did not believe my words, which wil come true at their appointed time, you will besilenced and have no power of speech until this has happened.'
21 E il popolo stava aspettando Zaccaria: e si maravigliava del tardare, che egli faceva nel tempio.	21 Meanwhile the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he stayed in the sanctuaryso long.
22 Ma essendo egli uscito, non poteva parlare ad essi: e compresero, ch'egli aveva avuta una visione nel tempio. Ed egli andava facendo loro dei cenni, e si restò mutolo.	22 When he came out he could not speak to them, and they realised that he had seen a vision in thesanctuary. But he could only make signs to them and remained dumb.
23 E avvenne, che, finiti i giorni del suo uffizio, se n' andò a casa sua:	23 When his time of service came to an end he returned home.
24 E dopo que' giorni Elisabetta sua moglie rimase incinta, e per cinque mesi si teneva nascosta, dicendo:	24 Some time later his wife Elizabeth conceived and for five months she kept to herself, saying,
25 Cosi ha fatto con me il Signore, quando si è a me rivolto per togliere la mia ignominia tra gli uomini.	25 'The Lord has done this for me, now that it has pleased him to take away the humiliation I suffered inpublic.'
26 Ma il sesto mese fu mandato l'Angelo Gabriele da Dio a una città della Galilea, chiamata Nazaret,	26 In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee cal ed Nazareth,
27 A una vergine sposata ad un uomo della casa di Davidde, nomato Giuseppe, e la Vergine si chiamava Maria.	27 to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the House of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 Ed entrato l'Angelo da lei, disse: Dio ti salvi, piena di grazia: il Signore è teco: Benedetta tu fra le donne.	28 He went in and said to her, 'Rejoice, you who enjoy God's favour! The Lord is with you.'
29 Le quali cose avendo ella udite, si turbò alle sue parole; e andava pensando, che sorta di saluto fosse questo.	29 She was deeply disturbed by these words and asked herself what this greeting could mean,
30 E l'Angelo le disse: Non temere, Maria, imperocché hai trovato grazia dinanzi a Dio.	30 but the angel said to her, 'Mary, do not be afraid; you have won God's favour.
31 Ecco che concepirai, e partorirà un figlio, e gli porrai nome Gesù.	31 Look! You are to conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you must name him Jesus.
32 Questi sarà grande, e sarà chiamato figliuolo dell'Altissimo: e a lui darà il Signore Iddio la sede di Davidde suo padre: e regnerà sopra la casa di Giacobbe in eterno.	32 He will be great and wil be cal ed Son of the Most High. The Lord God wil give him the throne of hisancestor David;
33 E il suo regno non avrà fine.	33 he wil rule over the House of Jacob for ever and his reign wil have no end.'
34 E Maria disse all'Angelo: la qual modo avverrà questo, mentre io non conosco uomo?	34 Mary said to the angel, 'But how can this come about, since I have no knowledge of man?'
35 E l'Angelo le rispose, e disse: Lo Spirito santo scenderà sopra di te, la virtù dell'Altissimo ti adombrerà. E per questo ancora quello, che nasce rà di te Santo, sarà chiamato figliuolo di Dio.	35 The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit wil come upon you, and the power of the Most High wil coveryou with its shadow. And so the child wil be holy and will be cal ed Son of God.
36 Ed ecco che Elisabetta tua parente ha concepito anch' essa un figliuolo nella sua vecchiezza: ed è nel sesto mese quella, che diceasi sterile:	36 And I tel you this too: your cousin Elizabeth also, in her old age, has conceived a son, and she whompeople cal ed barren is now in her sixth month,
37 Imperocché nulla sarà impossibile a Dio.	37 for nothing is impossible to God.'
38 E Maria disse: Ecco l'ancella del Signore, facciasi di me secondo la tua parola. E l'Angelo si parti da lei.	38 Mary said, 'You see before you the Lord's servant, let it happen to me as you have said.' And the angelleft her.
39 E Maria in quegli stessi giorni andò frettolosamente nella montagna a una città di Giuda:	39 Mary set out at that time and went as quickly as she could into the hil country to a town in Judah.
40 Ed entrò, in casa di Zaccaria, e salutò Elisabetta.	40 She went into Zechariah's house and greeted Elizabeth.
41 E avvenne, che appena Elisabetta udì il saluto di Maria, il bambino saltellò nel suo seno: ed Elisabetta fu ripiena di Spirito santo:	41 Now it happened that as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leapt in her womb andElizabeth was fil ed with the Holy Spirit.
42 Ed esclamò ad alta voce, e disse: Benedetta tu tra le donne, e benedetto il frutto del tuo ventre.	42 She gave a loud cry and said, 'Of al women you are the most blessed, and blessed is the fruit of yourwomb.
43 E donde a me questo, che la madre del Signor mio venga da me?	43 Why should I be honoured with a visit from the mother of my Lord?
44 Imperocché ecco che appena il suono del tuo saluto giunse alle mie orecchie, saltellò per giubbilo nel mio seno il bambino.	44 Look, the moment your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leapt for joy.
45 E beata te, che hai creduto, perché si adempiranno le cose dette a te dal Signore.	45 Yes, blessed is she who believed that the promise made her by the Lord would be fulfilled.'
46 E Maria disse: l'anima mia esalta la grandezza del Signore:	46 And Mary said: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
47 Ed esulta il mio spirito in Dio mio salvatore.	47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour;
48 Perché ha rivolto lo sguardo alla bassezza della sua serva: conciossiachè ecco che da questo punto beata mi chiameranno tutte le età.	48 because he has looked upon the humiliation of his servant. Yes, from now onwards all generations willcal me blessed,
49 Perché grandi cose ha fatte a me colui, che è potente, e di cui santo è il nome.	49 for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name,
50 E la misericordia di lui di generazione in generazione sopra coloro, che lo temono.	50 and his faithful love extends age after age to those who fear him.
51 Fece opere di potenza col suo braccio: dissipò i superbi coi pensieri del loro cuore.	51 He has used the power of his arm, he has routed the arrogant of heart.
52 Ha deposto dal trono i potenti, e ha esaltato i piccoli.	52 He has pul ed down princes from their thrones and raised high the lowly.
53 Ha ricolmati di beni i famelici, e voti ha rimandati i ricchi.	53 He has fil ed the starving with good things, sent the rich away empty.
54 Accolse Israele suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia:	54 He has come to the help of Israel his servant, mindful of his faithful love
55 Conforme parlò ai padri nostri, ad Abramo, e ai suoi discendenti per tutti i secoli.	55 -according to the promise he made to our ancestors -- of his mercy to Abraham and to hisdescendants for ever.
56 Maria poi si trattenne con lei circa tre mesi: e se ne tornò a casa sua.	56 Mary stayed with her some three months and then went home.
57 E si compi per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire, e partorì un figliuolo.	57 The time came for Elizabeth to have her child, and she gave birth to a son;
58 E i vicini, e i parenti di lei udirono, come il Signore aveva segnalata la sua misericordia verso di lei, e se ne congratulavano con essa.	58 and when her neighbours and relations heard that the Lord had lavished on her his faithful love, theyshared her joy.
59 E avvenne, che l'ottavo giorno andarono a circoncidere il fanciullo, e lo chiamavano Zaccaria dal nome di suo padre.	59 Now it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; they were going to call himZechariah after his father,
60 E la madre di lui rispose, e disse: Non già; ma avrà nome Giovanni.	60 but his mother spoke up. 'No,' she said, 'he is to be called John.'
61 E le dissero: Non v' ha alcuno della tua parentela, che porti tal nome.	61 They said to her, 'But no one in your family has that name,'
62 E facevano cenno a suo padre, come volesse, che fosse chiamato.	62 and made signs to his father to find out what he wanted him cal ed.
63 Ed egli, chiesta la tavoletta, scrisse cosi: Il suo nome è Giovanni. E tutti restarono maravigliati.	63 The father asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, 'His name is John.' And they were al astonished.
64 E in quel ponto fu aperta la sua bocca, e sciolta la sua lingua, e parlava benedicendo Dio.	64 At that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God.
65 E furono presi da timore tutti i loro vicini: e per tutta la montagna della Giudea si divulgarono tutte queste cose:	65 Al their neighbours were filled with awe and the whole affair was talked about throughout the hilcountry of Judaea.
66 E tutti quelli, che le avevano udite, le ponderavano in cuor loro, dicendo: Che bambino sarà, mai questo? imperocché la mano del Signore era con lui.	66 Al those who heard of it treasured it in their hearts. 'What will this child turn out to be?' they wondered.And indeed the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 E Zaccaria suo padre fu ripieno di Spirito santo: e profetò, dicendo:	67 His father Zechariah was fil ed with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy:
68 Benedetto il Signore Dio d'Israele, perché ha visitato, e redento il suo popolo.	68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited his people, he has set them free,
69 Ed ha innalzato per noi il principe della salute nella casa di Davidde suo servo.	69 and he has established for us a saving power in the House of his servant David,
70 Conforme annunzio per bocca de' santi profeti suoi, che sono stati dal cominciamento de' secoli:	70 just as he proclaimed, by the mouth of his holy prophets from ancient times,
71 La liberazione da' nostri nemici, e dalle mani di tutti coloro, che ci odiano:	71 that he would save us from our enemies and from the hands of al those who hate us,
72 Per fare misericordia co' padri nostri: e mostrarsi memore del testamento suo santo.	72 and show faithful love to our ancestors, and so keep in mind his holy covenant.
73 Conforme al giuramento, col quale ei giurò ad Abramo padre nostro, di concedere a noi:	73 This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham,
74 Che liberi dalle mani de' nostri nemici serviamo a lui scevri di timore.	74 that he would grant us, free from fear, to be delivered from the hands of our enemies,
75 Con santità, e giustizia nel cospetto di lui per tutti i nostri giorni.	75 to serve him in holiness and uprightness in his presence, al our days.
76 E tu, bambinello, sarai detto il profeta dell'Altissimo: perché precederai davanti alla faccia del Signore a preparare le sue vie:	76 And you, little child, you shall be cal ed Prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the Lord toprepare a way for him,
77 Per dare al suo popolo la scienza della salute per la remissione de' loro peccati,	77 to give his people knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 Mediante le viscere della misericordia del nostro Dio: per le quali ci ha visitato il Sol nascente dall'alto:	78 because of the faithful love of our God in which the rising Sun has come from on high to visit us,
79 Per illuminare coloro, che giacciono nelle tenebre, e nell'ombra della morte: per guidare i nostri passi nella via della pace.	79 to give light to those who live in darkness and the shadow dark as death, and to guide our feet into theway of peace.
80 E il bambino cresceva, e si fortificava nello spirito: e abitava pei deserti sino al tempo di darsi a conoscere a Israele.	80 Meanwhile the child grew up and his spirit grew strong. And he lived in the desert until the day heappeared openly to Israel.
