1 E il Signore parlò a Mosè, e disse:	1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
2 Fa' prima vendetta del malefatto da' Madianiti a' figliuoli d'Israele, e poi te ne andrai altuo popolo.	2 'Exact the ful vengeance for the Israelites on the Midianites. Afterwards you will be gathered to yourpeople.'
3 E Mosè subito disse: Si mettano all'ordine per combattere un numero di vostra gente, chepossano esercitar la vendetta del Signore sopra de' Madianiti:	3 Moses said to the people, 'Some of you are to take up arms for Yahweh's campaign against Midian,to carry out the vengeance of Yahweh on Midian.
4 Si scelgano mille uomini da ogni tribù d'Israele, che si spediscano a questa guerra,	4 You will put a thousand men in the field from each of the tribes of Israel.'
5 E furono eletti mille di ogni tribù, cioè dodici mila uomini armati di tutto punto:	5 In this way Israel's thousands provided twelve thousand men equipped for war, one thousand fromeach tribe:
6 I quali Mosè, spedì con Phinees figliuolo di Eleazaro sommo sacerdote; e diede a lui anche ivasi santi, e le trombe per suonare.	6 Moses put them in the field, one thousand from each tribe, with Phinehas, son of the priest Eleazar,to go with them carrying the sacred objects and the trumpets for the battle cry.
7 E avendo attaccata la mischia co' Madianiti, e avendoli vinti, uccisero tutti i maschi,	7 They made war on Midian, as Yahweh had ordered Moses, and put every male to death.
8 E i loro re, Evi, e Recem, e Sur, e Hur, e Rebe, cinque principi di quella nazione: ucciseroanche Balaam figliuolo di Beor.	8 What is more, they kil ed the kings of Midian, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five Midianite kings;they also put Balaam son of Beor to the sword.
9 E presero le loro donne, e i fanciulli, e tutti i bestiami, e tutte le robe loro: tutto quelche poterono avere fu messo a saccomanno.	9 The Israelites took the Midianite women and their little ones captive and carried off al their cattle, altheir flocks and al their goods as booty.
10 E furono consumate dalle fiamme le città, e i borghi, e i castelli.	10 They set fire to the towns where they lived and to al their encampments.
11 E tolsero la preda, e tutto quello, onde si erano impadroniti, tanto uomini, come bestie,	11 Then, taking al their booty, everything they had captured, human and animal,
12 E li condussero a Mosè, e ad Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, e a tutta la moltitudine de'figliuoli d'Israele: le altre robe poi le portarono agli alloggiamenti nella pianura di Moabvicino al Giordano dirimpetto a Gerico.	12 they brought the captives, spoil and booty to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the whole community ofIsraelites at the camp on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan by Jericho.
13 E Mosè ed Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, e tutti i principi della sinagoga andaron loroall'incontro fuora degli alloggiamenti.	13 Moses, the priest Eleazar and al the leaders of the community went out of the camp to meet them.
14 E Mosè andò in collera contro i capi dell'esercito, i tribuni, e i centurioni, che tornarondalla guerra;	14 Moses was enraged with the officers of the army, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, who had come back from this military expedition.
15 E disse: Perché avete salvate le donne?	15 He said, 'Why have you spared the life of al the women?
16 Non sono elleno quelle che a suggestione di Balaam sedussero i figliuoli d'Israele, e vifecero prevaricare contro il Signore col peccaminoso culto di Phogor, onde il popolo ebbeflagello?	16 They were the very ones who, on Balaam's advice, caused the Israelites to be unfaithful to Yahwehin the affair at Peor: hence the plague which struck Yahweh's community.
17 Or voi uccidete tutti i maschi anche di tenera età: e scannate le donne che han conosciutouomo:	17 So kil al the male children and kil al the women who have ever slept with a man;
18 Ma serbatevi le fanciulline, e tutte le donne vergini:	18 but spare the lives of the young girls who have never slept with a man, and keep them foryourselves.
19 E restate fuora degli alloggiamenti per sette giorni. Chi avrà ucciso un uomo, o toccato unucciso, si purificherà il terzo, e il settimo giorno:	19 As for you, bivouac outside the camp for seven days, everyone who has kil ed anyone or touched acorpse. Purify yourselves and your prisoners on the third and seventh days,
20 E tutta la preda, sieno vesti, sieno vasi, o mobili fatti di pelle, o di pelo di capra,ovvero di legno, si purificherà.	20 and purify al clothing, everything made of skin, everything woven of goat's hair and everythingmade of wood.'
21 Anche il sommo sacerdote Eleazaro parlò così a' soldati, che erano stati alla battaglia:Questo è l'ordine dato dal Signore a Mosè:	21 The priest Eleazar said to the soldiers who had come back from the campaign, 'This is an article ofthe Law which Yahweh prescribed to Moses:
22 L'oro e l'argento, e il rame, e il ferro, e il piombo, e lo stagno,	22 although gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead,
23 E tutto quello che può reggere al fuoco, si purificherà col fuoco: quelle cose poi, che nonpossono soffrir il fuoco, si santificheranno coll'acqua di espiazione:	23 everything that can withstand fire can be cleaned by being passed through fire, it must stil bepurified with water for purification. Whatever cannot resist fire you must pass through water.
24 E il settimo dì laverete le vostre vesti, e purificati entrerete poi negli alloggiamenti.	24 'Wash your clothes on the seventh day and you wil then be clean. You may then re-enter the camp.'
25 Disse anche il Signore a Mosè:	25 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:
26 Fate il conto di tutto quello che è preda dagli uomini fino alle bestie, tu, ed Eleazarosommo sacerdote, e i principi del popolo:	26 'With the priest Eleazar and the heads of families in the community, take a count of the spoils andcaptives, human and animal.
27 E dividerai in parti eguali il bottino tra coloro che hanno pugnato, e son iti alla guerra,e tra tutta l'altra moltitudine:	27 You wil then share out the spoil, half and half, between those who fought the campaign and the restof the community.
28 E della parte di quelli che pugnarono, e andarono alla guerra, ne separerai pel Signore ognicinquecento capi uno tanto degli uomini, come de' buoi, pecore, ed asini,	28 From the share of the combatants who took part in the campaign, you wil set aside one out of everyfive hundred persons, oxen, donkeys and sheep as Yahweh's portion.
29 E la darai ad Eleazaro sommo sacerdote, perché queste son le primizie del Signore.	29 You wil take this from the half share coming to them and give it to the priest Eleazar as the portionset aside for Yahweh.
30 Dell'altra metà ancora, che e de' figliuoli d'Israele, prenderai ogni cinquanta capi, unodegli uomini, de' buoi, degli asini, delle pecore, e di tutti gli animali, e li darai a'Leviti, che vegliano al servigio del tabernacolo del Signore.	30 From the half coming to the Israelites, you will take one out of every fifty persons, oxen, donkeys,sheep, and al other animals, and give them to the Levites who are responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing.'
31 E Mosè ed Eleazaro fecero secondo il comando del Signore.	31 Moses and the priest Eleazar did as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
32 E la preda fatta dall'esercito fu secento settanta cinque mila pecore,	32 The spoils, the remainder of the booty captured by the soldiers, came to six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep and goats,
33 Settanta due mila buoi,	33 seventy-two thousand head of cattle,
34 Sessantun mila asini:	34 sixty-one thousand donkeys,
35 Trenta due mila persone di sesso femminino, che eran vergini.	35 and in persons, women who had never slept with a man, thirty-two thousand in al .
36 E la metà fu data a quelli che erano stati alla battaglia, trecento trenta sette milacinquecento pecore:	36 Half was assigned to those who had taken part in the war, namely three hundred and thirty-seventhousand five hundred sheep and goats,
37 Delle quali si serbarono per la porzione del Signore secento sessanta cinque pecore.	37 of which Yahweh's portion was six hundred and seventy-five,
38 E de' trenta sei mila bovi si serbarono settanta due bovi:	38 thirty-six thousand head of cattle, of which Yahweh's portion was seventy-two,
39 De' trenta mila cinquecento asini, asini sessantuno:	39 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys, of which Yahweh's portion was sixty-one,
40 Delle sedici mila persone furono assegnate per la porzione del Signore trentadue persone.	40 and sixteen thousand persons, of which Yahweh's portion was thirty-two.
41 E Mosè secondo l'ordine ricevuto diede ad Eleazaro sacerdote il suo numero delle primiziedel Signore,	41 Moses gave the priest Eleazar the portion set aside for Yahweh, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
42 Tolte da quella metà, che era stata assegnata a' figliuoli d'Israele, che erano stati allaguerra:	42 As for the half coming to the Israelites which Moses had separated from that of the combatants,
43 E dall'altra metà, che era toccata al restante della moltitudine, vale a dire dalle trecentotrenta sette mila cinquecento pecore,	43 this half, the community's share, came to three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundredsheep and goats,
44 E da' trentasei mila buoi,	44 thirty-six thousand head of cattle,
45 E da' trenta mila cinquecento asini,	45 thirty thousand five hundred donkeys
46 E da' sedici mila uomini,	46 and sixteen thousand persons.
47 Tolse Mosè un capo per ogni cinquanta, e li diede a' Leviti, che vegliavano al servigio deltabernacolo del Signore, come avea ordinato il Signore.	47 From this half, the Israelites' share, Moses took one out of every fifty, human and animal, and gavethem to the Levites who were responsible for Yahweh's Dwel ing, as Yahweh had ordered Moses.
48 E appressatisi a Mosè i capi dell'esercito, e i tribuni, e i centurioni, dissero:	48 The officers of the thousands who had fought the campaign, the commanders of the thousands andcommanders of the hundreds, came to Moses
49 Noi servi tuoi abbiam contato il numero de' combattenti, che avevamo sotto di noi: e non nemanca neppur uno.	49 and said, 'Your servants have numbered the soldiers under their command: none of our men ismissing.
50 Per questa ragione noi offeriam ciascheduno in dono al Signore tutto l'oro, che abbiampotuto trovar nella preda, cintoli, e braccialetti, anelli, e orecchini, e vezzi, affinchétu preghi il Signore per noi.	50 So, as an offering for Yahweh, we have brought what each of us has found in the way of goldornaments, armlets and bracelets, rings, earrings and breastplates, to make expiation for ourselves beforeYahweh.'
51 E Mosè ed EIeazaro sacerdote riceverono tutto l'oro lavorato in diverse guise,	51 Moses and the priest Eleazar accepted this gold from them, al this jewel ery.
52 Offerto da' tribuni, e da' centurioni in peso di sedici mila settecento cinquanta sicli;	52 This portion of gold given to Yahweh by the commanders of the thousands and commanders of thehundreds amounted to sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels.
53 (Perocché quello che ciascuno nel saccomanno avea pigliato, era suo).	53 Each of the soldiers took his own booty.
54 E lo presero, e lo portarono nel tabernacolo del testimonio per istarvi come monumento de'figliuoli d'Israele dinanzi al Signore.	54 But Moses and the priest Eleazar, having accepted the gold from the commanders of the thousandsand commanders of the hundreds, brought it into the Tent of Meeting, to be a reminder of the Israelites beforeYahweh.
