1 « L'argento ha una fonte delle sue vene, l'oro ha un luogo dove vien fuso,	1 Silver has its mines, and gold a place for refining.
2 il ferro si cava dalla terra, e la pietra fusa dal calore dà il rame;	2 Iron is extracted from the earth, the smelted rocks yield copper.
3 (l'uomo) fissa il tempo alle tenebre, da sè scruta il fine di tutte le cose, ed anche la pietra (nascosta) nella caligine e nell'ombra di morte.	3 Man makes an end of darkness, to the utmost limit he digs the black rock in shadow dark as death.
4 Un torrente separa dal popolo viaggiatore coloro che il piede dell'uomo povero ha dimenticati e che son fuori della via;	4 Foreigners bore into ravines in unfrequented places, swinging suspended far from human beings.
5 una terra da cui veniva il pane nelle sue viscere è sconvolta dal fuoco;	5 That earth from which bread comes is ravaged underground by fire.
6 nelle sue pietre v'è lo zaffiro, le sue zolle son d'oro.	6 There, the rocks have veins of sapphire and their dust contains gold.
7 L'aquila ne ignorò la via nè la vide l'occhio dell'avvoltoio.	7 That is a path unknown to birds of prey, unseen by the eye of any vulture;
8 I figli dei mercanti non la calcarono e non vi passò mai la leonessa.	8 a path not trodden by the lordly beasts, where no lion ever walked.
9 (L'uomo) stese la mano contro la selce, rovesciò dalle radici le montagne.	9 Man attacks the flint, upturning mountains by their roots.
10 Scavò rivi nelle rocce, e col suo occhio scrutò quanto v'è di prezioso.	10 He cuts canals through the rock, on the watch for anything precious.
11 Scrutò pure le profondità dei fiumi, e ne trasse alla luce ciò che v'era nascosto.	11 He explores the sources of rivers, bringing hidden things to light.
12 Ma dove si trova la sapienza? Dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?	12 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
13 L'uomo non ne conosce il prezzo. Essa non si trova nella terra di coloro che vivono in delizie;	13 No human being knows the way to her, she is not to be found on earth where they live.
14 l'abisso dice: Non è in me; il mare dice: In me non si trova.	14 'She is not in me,' says the Abyss; 'Nor here,' replies the Sea.
15 Non sarà barattata coll'oro più fino; non sarà comprata a peso d'argento;	15 She cannot be bought with solid gold, nor paid for with any weight of silver,
16 non sarà messa a paragone colle colorite stoffe dell'india, nè colla pietra sardonica più pregiata, nè collo zaffiro.	16 nor valued against gold of Ophir, precious agate or sapphire.
17 A lei non sarà paragonato l'oro e il vetro, nè sarà commutata con vasi d'oro.	17 Neither gold nor glass compares with her, for her, a vase of fine gold would be no exchange,
18 Le cose più grandi e pregiate non saran neppur rammentate in paragone di essa, chè la sapienza viene da fonte occulta:	18 let alone coral or crystal: better go fishing for Wisdom than for pearls!
19 non l'arriverà il topazio d'Etiopia, nè saranno paragonati a lei i colori più brillanti.	19 Topaz from Cush is worthless in comparison, and gold, even refined, is valueless.
20 Donde vien dunque la sapienza? E dov'è il luogo dell'intelligenza?	20 But where does Wisdom come from? Where is Intel igence to be found?
21 E' nascosta agli occhi di tutti i viventi, è ignota anche agli uccelli del cielo.	21 She cannot be seen by any living creature, she is hidden from the birds of the sky.
22 La perdizione e la morte han detto: E' giunta ai nostri orecchi la sua fama.	22 Perdition and Death both say, 'We have heard only rumours of her.'
