1 Viveva nella terra di Us un uomo chiamato Giobbe, integro e retto, timorato di Dio e lontano dal male.	1 There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, and he was a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.
2 Gli erano nati sette figli e tre figlie;	2 And there had been born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3 possedeva settemila pecore e tremila cammelli, cinquecento paia di buoi e cinquecento asine, e una servitù molto numerosa. Quest’uomo era il più grande fra tutti i figli d’oriente.	3 And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, along with five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and also a very large family. And this man was great among all the people of the east.
4 I suoi figli solevano andare a fare banchetti in casa di uno di loro, ciascuno nel suo giorno, e mandavano a invitare le loro tre sorelle per mangiare e bere insieme.	4 And his sons went and made a feast by houses, each one on his day. And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5 Quando avevano compiuto il turno dei giorni del banchetto, Giobbe li mandava a chiamare per purificarli; si alzava di buon mattino e offriva olocausti per ognuno di loro. Giobbe infatti pensava: «Forse i miei figli hanno peccato e hanno maledetto Dio nel loro cuore». Così era solito fare Giobbe ogni volta.	5 And when the days of their feasting had been completed, Job sent to them and sanctified them, and, getting up at dawn, he offered holocausts for each one. For he said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts.” So Job did all the days.
6 Ora, un giorno, i figli di Dio andarono a presentarsi al Signore e anche Satana andò in mezzo a loro.	6 But on a certain day, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, Satan also arrived among them.
7 Il Signore chiese a Satana: «Da dove vieni?». Satana rispose al Signore: «Dalla terra, che ho percorso in lungo e in largo».	7 The Lord said to him, “Where do you come from?” Answering, he said, “I have circled the land, and walked around in it.”
8 Il Signore disse a Satana: «Hai posto attenzione al mio servo Giobbe? Nessuno è come lui sulla terra: uomo integro e retto, timorato di Dio e lontano dal male».	8 And the Lord said to him, “Have you not considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.”
9 Satana rispose al Signore: «Forse che Giobbe teme Dio per nulla?	9 Answering him, Satan said, “Does Job fear God to no purpose?
10 Non sei forse tu che hai messo una siepe intorno a lui e alla sua casa e a tutto quello che è suo? Tu hai benedetto il lavoro delle sue mani e i suoi possedimenti si espandono sulla terra.	10 Have you not fortified him, as well as his house and every one of his belongings around him, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased in the land?
11 Ma stendi un poco la mano e tocca quanto ha, e vedrai come ti maledirà apertamente!».	11 But extend your hand a little, and touch all that he possesses, and see if he still praises you to your face.”
12 Il Signore disse a Satana: «Ecco, quanto possiede è in tuo potere, ma non stendere la mano su di lui». Satana si ritirò dalla presenza del Signore.	12 Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, only do not extend your hand against him.” And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.
13 Un giorno accadde che, mentre i suoi figli e le sue figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo vino in casa del fratello maggiore,	13 So, on a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their first-born brother,
14 un messaggero venne da Giobbe e gli disse: «I buoi stavano arando e le asine pascolando vicino ad essi.	14 a messenger came to Job, who said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys were grazing beside them,
15 I Sabei hanno fatto irruzione, li hanno portati via e hanno passato a fil di spada i guardiani. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».	15 and the Sabeans rushed in and carried away everything, and they struck the servants with the sword; and I alone evaded them to tell you.”
16 Mentre egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «Un fuoco divino è caduto dal cielo: si è appiccato alle pecore e ai guardiani e li ha divorati. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».	16 And while he was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The fire of God fell from heaven, and, having struck the sheep and the servants, it consumed them; and I alone escaped to tell you.”
17 Mentre egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «I Caldei hanno formato tre bande: sono piombati sopra i cammelli e li hanno portati via e hanno passato a fil di spada i guardiani. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».	17 And while he also was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The Chaldeans organized three attacks, and advanced on the camels and took them; and not only that, but they have struck the servants with the sword; and I alone fled to tell you.”
18 Mentre egli ancora parlava, entrò un altro e disse: «I tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano mangiando e bevendo vino in casa del loro fratello maggiore,	18 He was still speaking, and behold, another entered, and he said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,
19 quand’ecco un vento impetuoso si è scatenato da oltre il deserto: ha investito i quattro lati della casa, che è rovinata sui giovani e sono morti. Sono scampato soltanto io per raccontartelo».	19 when suddenly a severe wind rushed forth from a region of the desert and shook the four corners of the house, which collapsed and crushed your children, and they are dead; and I alone escaped to tell you.”
20 Allora Giobbe si alzò e si stracciò il mantello; si rase il capo, cadde a terra, si prostrò	20 Then Job got up and tore his garments, and, having shaved his head, he collapsed on the ground, and worshipped,
21 e disse: «Nudo uscii dal grembo di mia madre, e nudo vi ritornerò. Il Signore ha dato, il Signore ha tolto, sia benedetto il nome del Signore!».	21 and he said, “Naked I departed from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Just as it pleased the Lord, so has it been done. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 In tutto questo Giobbe non peccò e non attribuì a Dio nulla di ingiusto.	22 In all this, Job did not sin by his lips, nor did he speak any foolish thing against God.
