1 Avevo stretto con gli occhi un patto di non fissare neppure una vergine.	1 If I have made an agreement with my eyes and entertained any thoughts against a maiden;
2 Che parte mi assegna Dio di lassù e che porzione mi assegna l'Onnipotente dall'alto?	2 But what is man's lot from God above, his inheritance from the Almighty on high?
3 Non è forse la rovina riservata all'iniquo e la sventura per chi compie il male?	3 Is it not calamity for the unrighteous, and woe for evildoers?
4 Non vede egli la mia condotta e non conta tutti i miei passi?	4 Does he not see my ways, and number all my steps?
5 Se ho agito con falsità e il mio piede si è affrettato verso la frode,	5 If I have walked in falsehood and my foot has hastened to deceit;
6 mi pesi pure sulla bilancia della giustizia e Dio riconoscerà la mia integrità.	6 Let God weigh me in the scales of justice; thus will he know my innocence!
7 Se il mio passo è andato fuori strada e il mio cuore ha seguito i miei occhi, se alla mia mano si è attaccata sozzura,	7 If my steps have turned out of the way, and my heart has followed my eyes, or any stain clings to my hands,
8 io semini e un altro ne mangi il frutto e siano sradicati i miei germogli.	8 Then may I sow, but another eat of it, or may my planting be rooted up!
9 Se il mio cuore fu sedotto da una donna e ho spiato alla porta del mio prossimo,	9 If my heart has been enticed toward a woman, and I have lain in wait at my neighbor's door;
10 mia moglie macini per un altro e altri ne abusino;	10 Then may my wife grind for another, and may others cohabit with her!
11 difatti quello è uno scandalo, un delitto da deferire ai giudici,	11 For that would be heinous, a crime to be condemned;
12 quello è un fuoco che divora fino alla distruzione e avrebbe consumato tutto il mio raccolto.	12 A fire that should burn down to the abyss till it consumed all my possessions to the roots.
13 Se ho negato i diritti del mio schiavo e della schiava in lite con me,	13 Had I refused justice to my manservant or to my maid, when they had a claim against me,
14 che farei, quando Dio si alzerà, e, quando farà l'inchiesta, che risponderei?	14 What then should I do when God rose up; what could I answer when he demanded an account?
15 Chi ha fatto me nel seno materno, non ha fatto anche lui? Non fu lo stesso a formarci nel seno?	15 Did not he who made me in the womb make him? Did not the same One fashion us before our birth?
16 Mai ho rifiutato quanto brama il povero, né ho lasciato languire gli occhi della vedova;	16 If I have denied anything to the poor, or allowed the eyes of the widow to languish
17 mai da solo ho mangiato il mio tozzo di pane, senza che ne mangiasse l'orfano,	17 While I ate my portion alone, with no share in it for the fatherless,
18 poiché Dio, come un padre, mi ha allevato fin dall'infanzia e fin dal ventre di mia madre mi ha guidato.	18 Though like a father God has reared me from my youth, guiding me even from my mother's womb--
19 Se mai ho visto un misero privo di vesti o un povero che non aveva di che coprirsi,	19 If I have seen a wanderer without clothing, or a poor man without covering,
20 se non hanno dovuto benedirmi i suoi fianchi, o con la lana dei miei agnelli non si è riscaldato;	20 Whose limbs have not blessed me when warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
21 se contro un innocente ho alzato la mano, perché vedevo alla porta chi mi spalleggiava,	21 If I have raised my hand against the innocent because I saw that I had supporters at the gate--
22 mi si stacchi la spalla dalla nuca e si rompa al gomito il mio braccio,	22 Then may my arm fall from the shoulder, my forearm be broken at the elbow!
23 perché mi incute timore la mano di Dio e davanti alla sua maestà non posso resistere.	23 For the dread of God will be upon me, and his majesty will overpower me.
24 Se ho riposto la mia speranza nell'oro e all'oro fino ho detto: "Tu sei la mia fiducia";	24 Had I put my trust in gold or called fine gold my security;
25 se godevo perché grandi erano i miei beni e guadagnava molto la mia mano;	25 Or had I rejoiced that my wealth was great, or that my hand had acquired abundance--
26 se vedendo il sole risplendere e la luna chiara avanzare,	26 Had I looked upon the sun as it shone, or the moon in the splendor of its progress,
27 si è lasciato sedurre in segreto il mio cuore e con la mano alla bocca ho mandato un bacio,	27 And had my heart been secretly enticed to waft them a kiss with my hand;
28 anche questo sarebbe stato un delitto da tribunale, perché avrei rinnegato Dio che sta in alto.	28 This too would be a crime for condemnation, for I should have denied God above.
29 Ho gioito forse della disgrazia del mio nemico e ho esultato perché lo colpiva la sventura,	29 Had I rejoiced at the destruction of my enemy or exulted when evil fell upon him,
30 io che non ho permesso alla mia lingua di peccare, augurando la sua morte con imprecazioni?	30 Even though I had not suffered my mouth to sin by uttering a curse against his life--
31 Non diceva forse la gente della mia tenda: "A chi non ha dato delle sue carni per saziarsi?".	31 Had not the men of my tent exclaimed, "Who has not been fed with his meat!"
32 All'aperto non passava la notte lo straniero e al viandante aprivo le mie porte.	32 Because no stranger lodged in the street, but I opened my door to wayfarers--
33 Non ho nascosto, alla maniera degli uomini, la mia colpa, tenendo celato il mio delitto in petto,	33 Had I, out of human weakness, hidden my sins and buried my guilt in my bosom
34 come se temessi molto la folla, e il disprezzo delle tribù mi spaventasse, sì da starmene zitto senza uscire di casa.	34 Because I feared the noisy multitude and the scorn of the tribes terrified me- then I should have remained silent, and not come out of doors!
35 Oh, avessi uno che mi ascoltasse! Ecco qui la mia firma! L'Onnipotente mi risponda! Il documento scritto dal mio avversario	35 Oh, that I had one to hear my case, and that my accuser would write out his indictment!
36 vorrei certo portarlo sulle mie spalle e cingerlo come mio diadema!	36 Surely, I should wear it on my shoulder or put it on me like a diadem;
37 Il numero dei miei passi gli manifesterei e mi presenterei a lui come sovrano.	37 Of all my steps I should give him an account; like a prince I should present myself before him. This is my final plea; let the Almighty answer me! The words of Job are ended.
38 Se contro di me grida la mia terra e i suoi solchi piangono con essa;	38 If my land has cried out against me till its very furrows complained;
39 se ho mangiato il suo frutto senza pagare e ho fatto sospirare dalla fame i suoi coltivatori,	39 If I have eaten its produce without payment and grieved the hearts of its tenants;
40 in luogo di frumento, getti spine, ed erbaccia al posto dell'orzo.	40 Then let the thistles grow instead of wheat and noxious weeds instead of barley!
