| 3 erano di sua proprietà settemila pecore, tremila cammelli, cinquecento paia di buoi e cinquecento asine e servitù molto numerosa: era l’uomo più facoltoso di tutti i figli dell’Oriente. | 3 And he owned seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen and fivehundred she-donkeys, and many servants besides. This man was the most prosperous of al the Sons of the East. |
| 4 I suoi figli poi erano soliti recarsi in casa uno dell’altro, a turno; mandavano a chiamare anche le sorelle per mangiare e bere con loro. | 4 It was the custom of his sons to hold banquets in one another's houses in turn, and to invite their threesisters to eat and drink with them. |
| 5 Finito il turno dei giorni di convito, Giobbe li mandò a chiamare e li purificò; levatosi di buon mattino, offrì olocausti, in numero uguale a tutti loro; egli infatti pensava: «Forse i miei figli hanno peccato e hanno benedetto Dio nei loro cuori!» Così Giobbe faceva ogni giorno. | 5 Once each series of banquets was over, Job would send for them to come and be purified, and at dawnon the fol owing day he would make a burnt offering for each of them. 'Perhaps', Job would say, 'my sons havesinned and in their heart blasphemed.' So that was what Job used to do each time. |
| 6 Accadde un giorno che i figli di Dio vennero a presentarsi a Jahvè e tra di loro andò anche Satana. | 6 One day when the sons of God came to attend on Yahweh, among them came Satan. |
| 7 Jahvè disse a Satana: «Donde vieni?», Quegli rispose: «Da un giro sulla terra e da una passeggiata su di essa», | 7 So Yahweh said to Satan, 'Where have you been?' 'Prowling about on earth,' he answered, 'roamingaround there.' |
| 8 Jahvè disse a Satana: «Hai fatto attenzione al mio servitore Giobbe? Non ce n’è uno come lui sulla terra: è un uomo integro e retto, timorato di Dio e lontano dal male». | 8 So Yahweh asked him, 'Did you pay any attention to my servant Job? There is no one like him on theearth: a sound and honest man who fears God and shuns evil.' |
| 9 Satana rispose a Jahvè: «Forse Giobbe teme Dio per niente? | 9 'Yes,' Satan said, 'but Job is not God-fearing for nothing, is he? |
| 10 Non hai tu circondato con una siepe lui, la sua casa, tutti i suoi averi da ogni parte? Hai benedetto l'opera delle sue mani e il suo bestiame abbonda sulla terra. | 10 Have you not put a wal round him and his house and al his domain? You have blessed al heundertakes, and his flocks throng the countryside. |

| 12 Jahvè disse a Satana: «Ecco, tutte le sue cose sono nella tua mano; però non stendere la mano su di lui!» Satana si allontanò da Jahvè. | 12 'Very well,' Yahweh said to Satan, 'al he has is in your power. But keep your hands off his person.' SoSatan left the presence of Yahweh. |

| 19 ed ecco un gran vento arrivò dalla parte del deserto e investì i quattro angoli della casa: questa cadde sui giovani, che sono morti: io solo sono scampato e te ne porto la notizia». | 19 when suddenly from the desert a gale sprang up, and it battered all four corners of the house which fellin on the young people. They are dead: I alone have escaped to tel you.' |
| 20 Giobbe allora si alzò e si stracciò il mantello. Poi si rase il capo, si gettò a terra e adorò. Disse: | 20 Then Job stood up, tore his robe and shaved his head. Then, fal ing to the ground, he prostratedhimself |
| 21 «Nudo sono uscito dal seno di mia madre e nudo ritornerò là! Jahvè ha dato e Jahvè ha tolto: il nome di Jahvè sia benedetto!» | 21 and said: Naked I came from my mother's womb, naked I shal return again. Yahweh gave, Yahwehhas taken back. Blessed be the name of Yahweh! |
| 22 In tutto questo Giobbe non peccò e non pronunciò stoltezza verso Dio. | 22 In al this misfortune Job committed no sin, and he did not reproach God. |
