1 ¡Oh muerte, qué amargo es tu recuerdo para el hombre que vive en paz entre sus bienes, para el varón desocupado a quien en todo le va bien, y todavía con fuerzas para servirse el alimento!	1 O death! how bitter the thought of you for the man at peace amid his possessions, For the man unruffled and always successful, who still can enjoy life's pleasures.
2 ¡Oh muerte, buena es tu sentencia para el hombre necesitado y carente de fuerzas, para el viejo acabado, ahíto de cuidados, que se rebela y ha perdido la paciencia!	2 O death! how welcome your sentence to the weak man of failing strength, Tottering and always rebuffed, with no more sight, with vanished hope.
3 No temas la sentencia de la muerte, recuerda tus comienzos y tu fin.	3 Fear not death's decree for you; remember, it embraces those before you, and those after.
4 Esta sentencia viene del Señor sobre toda carne, ¿por qué desaprobar el agrado del Altísimo? Ya se viva diez, cien, mil años, no se reprocha en el seol la vida.	4 Thus God has ordained for all flesh; why then should you reject the will of the Most High? Whether one has lived a thousand years, a hundred, or ten, in the nether world he has no claim on life.
5 Hijos abominables son los hijos de los pecadores que viven en vecindad de impíos.	5 A reprobate line are the children of sinners, and witless offspring are in the homes of the wicked.
6 La herencia de los hijos de los pecadores va a la ruina, con su linaje se perpetúa el oprobio.	6 Their dominion is lost to sinners' children, and reproach abides with their descendants.
7 Al padre impío le reprochan sus hijos, porque por causa de él viven en oprobio.	7 Children curse their wicked father, for they suffer disgrace through him.
8 ¡Ay de vosotros, impíos, que la ley del Altísimo habéis abandonado!	8 Woe to you, O sinful men, who forsake the law of the Most High.
9 Si nacéis, para la maldición nacéis, si morís, la maldición heredáis.	9 If you have children, calamity will seize them; you will beget them only for groaning. When you stumble, there is lasting joy; at death, you become a curse.
10 Todo cuanto viene de tierra, a tierra volverá, así irán los impíos de la maldición a la ruina.	10 Whatever is of nought returns to nought, so too the godless from void to void.
11 El duelo de los hombres se dirige a sus cuerpos, pero el nombre de los pecadores, que no es bueno, se borrará.	11 Man's body is a fleeting thing, but a virtuous name will never be annihilated.
12 Preocúpate de tu nombre, que eso te queda, más que mil grandes tesoros de oro.	12 Have a care for your name, for it will stand by you better than precious treasures in the thousands;
13 La vida buena tiene un límite de días, pero el buen nombre permanece para siempre.	13 The boon of life is for limited days, but a good name, for days without number.
14 Conservad la instrucción en paz, hijos. Sabiduría escondida y tesoro invisible, ¿qué provecho hay en ambos?	14 My children, heed my instruction about shame; judge of disgrace only according to my rules, For it is not always well to be ashamed, nor is it always the proper thing to blush:
15 Más vale hombre que oculta su necedad, que hombre que oculta su sabiduría.	15 Before father and mother be ashamed of immorality, before master and mistress, of falsehood;
16 Así pues, ruborizaos de lo que os voy a señalar, que no es bueno guardar toda vergüenza, ni todo es apreciato fielmente por todos.	16 Before prince and ruler, of flattery; before the public assembly, of crime;
17 Ante un padre y una madre avergonzaos de la fornicación, de la mentira, ante el jefe y el poderoso;	17 Before friend and companion, of disloyalty, and of breaking an oath or agreement.
18 del extravío, ante juez y el magistrado, de la iniquidad, ante la asamblea y el pueblo;	18 Be ashamed of theft from the people where you settle, and of stretching out your elbow when you dine;
19 de la injusticia, ante el compañero y el amigo, del robo, ante el lugar en que resides;	19 Of refusing to give when asked, of defrauding another of his appointed share,
20 y ante la verdad de Dios y la alianza: de clavar los codos en los panes,	20 Of failing to return a greeting, and of rebuffing a friend;
21 de despreciar la recepción y el don, de callarse ante los que saludan,	21 Of gazing at a married woman, and of entertaining thoughts about another's wife; Of trifling with a servant girl you have, and of violating her couch;
22 de mirar a mujer prostituta, de volver la cara a tu pariente,	22 Of using harsh words with friends, and of following up your gifts with insults;
23 de quitar la parte y el don de otro, de clavar los ojos en mujer casada,	23 Of repeating what you hear, and of betraying secrets--
24 de intimidades con la criada - ¡no te acerques a su lecho! -	24 These are the things you should rightly avoid as shameful if you would be looked upon by everyone with favor.
25 de palabras injuriosas ante los amigos - después de dar no hagas reproches -
26 de repetir la palabra oída, de revelar las palabras secretas.
27 Serás entonces de verdad un hombre ruboroso, y ante todo el mundo hallarás gracia.
