1 Le vigilie dell'avarizia consuman le carni, e le sue cure levano il sonno.	1 Watching for wealth consumes the flesh, and thinking about it takes away sleep.
2 I pensieri dell'avvenire sturbano la quiete, come la grave malattia fa vegliar l'uomo.	2 Anticipation in thought distracts the mind, and a grievous infirmity makes the soul sober.
3 Faticò il ricco per adunare ricchezze, e nel suo riposo è ricolmo di beni.	3 The rich man has labored in gathering wealth, and in his rest, he will be filled with his goods.
4 Lavora il povero per bisogno di vitto, e se fa fine di lavorare diventa mendico.	4 The poor man has labored in his lowly way, and in the end, he may still be in need.
5 Chi è amante dell'oro, non sarà giusto, e chi va dietro alla corruzione, di essa sarà ripieno.	5 Whoever loves gold will not be justified. And whoever pursues consumption will be consumed by it.
6 Molti sono andati in precipizio a causa dell'oro, e la bellezza di lui fu la loro perdizione.	6 Many have been caused to fall because of gold, and it became their ruin by its beauty.
7 Legno d'inciampo è l'oro per quelli, che a lui fan sagrifizio: guai a quelli, che gli van dietro; ma tutti gli imprudenti periranno per esso.	7 Gold is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice for it. Woe to those who pursue it eagerly, for all the imprudent will perish by it.
8 Beato il ricco, che è trovato senza colpa, ed il quale non va dietro all'oro né sua speranza ripone nel denaro, e nei tesori.	8 Blessed is the rich man who is found to be without blemish. And blessed is he who has not gone after gold, nor placed his hope in money or treasures.
9 Chi è costui, e gli darem lode? perché egli ha fatto cose mirabili nella sua vita.	9 Who is he? For we should praise him. For he has done wonderful things in his life.
10 Egli fu provato per mezzo dell'oro, e trovato perfetto; ed avranne gloria eterna. Egli potea peccare, e non peccò, far del male, e nol fece:	10 He has been tested by it, and has become perfect; he will have eternal glory. He was able to transgress, but he has not transgressed. He was able to do evil, but he has not done evil.
11 Per questo i beni di lui sono stabili nel Signore, e le sue limosine saran celebrate da tutta la congregazione de' santi.	11 Therefore, his good things are established in the Lord, and the entire Church of the saints will proclaim his almsgiving.
12 Se' tu assiso a splendida mensa? non essere tu ivi il primo a spalancare la gola.	12 Are you seated at a great table? You should not open your mouth over it first.
13 Non dire: molta è la roba, che è in tavola.	13 You should not speak in this way: “There are many things that are upon it.”
14 Ricordati, che una mala cosa è l'occhio cattivo.	14 Remember that a wicked eye is evil.
15 Non v'ha di peggio di quest'occhio tralle cose create? per questo egli in veggendo, piange con tutto il suo volto.	15 What has been made more wicked than the eye? Therefore, when it sees, it will shed tears over the entire face.
16 Non essere il primo a stendere la mano, affinchè maltrattato dall'invidioso tu non abbi ad arrossire.	16 You should not extend your hand first, for then, having been corrupted by envy, you would be ashamed.
17 Nel prendere le vivande non urtare cogli altri.	17 You should not press forward at a feast.
18 Giudica del genio del tuo prossimo dal tuo.	18 Understand which things are your neighbor’s and not your own.
19 Serviti da uomo frugale di quelle cose, che li son messe davanti, affinchè non avvenga, che col molto mangiare tu ti renda odioso.	19 Make use of the things that are set before you, just as a frugal man would. Otherwise, if you eat much, you will be hated.
20 Sii il primo a finire per verecondia, e non essere smoderato per non disgustare veruno.	20 Cease eating first, for the sake of discipline. And do not eat to excess, lest you offend.
21 E se siedi in mezzo a molti, non istender la mano prima di quelli, e non essere il primo a chiedere da bere.	21 And if you sit in the midst of many, you should not extend your hand before they do, and you should not be the first to ask for a drink.
22 Quanto poco vino è sufficiente ad un uomo bene educato! e in dormendo non ne sarai inquietato, e non ne sentirai incomodo.	22 How sufficient is a little wine for a well-taught man! For in sleep, you will not labor because of it, and you will not feel pain.
23 Le vigilie, la colica, e i dolori sono per l'uomo intemperante.	23 Worry, and disease, and torment are with an intemperate man.
24 Il sonno salubre è per l'uomo parco: egli dorme sino al mattino, e l'anima di lui sarà lieta con esso.	24 A healthy sleep is with a temperate man. He will sleep until morning, and his soul will be delighted with him.
25 Che se tu se' stato forzato a mangiar molto, vattene dalla conversazione, vomita, e ti troverai sollevato, e non cagionerai malattia al tuo corpo.	25 And if you have been coaxed into eating too much, rise up, go outside, and vomit. And it will refresh you, and you will not bring sickness upon your body.
26 Figliuolo ascoltami, e non disprezzarmi, e da ultimo conoscerai quel, che siano le mie parole.	26 Listen to me, son, for you should not spurn me. And in the very end, you will discover my words.
27 In tutte le operazioni tue sii diligente, e non si accosterà a te nissun malore.	27 In all your works, be prompt, and then no infirmity will befall you.
28 Colui, che è liberale nel dar del pane, è benedetto dalle labbra di molti e la testimonianza, che rendesi alla bontà di lui, è sicura.	28 The lips of many will bless the splendid in bread. For the testimony of his truthfulness is faithful.
29 Contro di chi è spilorcio nel dar del pane mormora tutta la città, e la testimonianza renduta alla spilorceria di lui è verace.	29 The city will murmur against the wicked in bread. For the testimony against his wickedness is true.
30 Non provocare i bravi bevitori: perocché molti sono stati sterminati dal vino.	30 Do not choose to provoke those who love wine. For wine has destroyed many.
31 Il fuoco prova la durezza del ferro; così il vino bevuto fino all'ebbrezza manifesta i cuori de' superbi.	31 Fire tests the hardness of iron; similarly, drinking wine to inebriation will rebuke the hearts of the arrogant.
32 Buona vita per gli uomini è il vino usato con sobrietà: sarai sobrio, se ne berai con moderazione.	32 Drinking wine in sobriety gives a contented life to men. If you drink it in moderation, you will be sober.
33 Qual vita è quella di chi sta senza vino?	33 What is life to him who is diminished by wine?
34 Che è quello, che ci priva della vita? la morte.	34 What can cheat him of his life? Death.
35 Il vino da principio fa creato per giocondità, non per l'ubbriachezza.	35 From the beginning, wine was created for cheerfulness, but not for inebriation.
36 Il vino bevuto moderatamente rallegra l'anima, e il cuore.	36 Wine taken in moderation lifts up the mind and the heart.
37 Il ber temperato è salute dell'anima, e del corpo.	37 Sober drinking is healthful to mind and body.
38 Il troppo vino fa le contese, e l'ira, e molte rovine.	38 Wine taken in excess stirs up conflict and anger, and brings many to ruin.
39 Il vino bevuto in copia è l'amarezza dell'anima.	39 Wine taken in excess is bitter to the soul.
40 L'ubbriacchezza fa ardito lo stolta ad offendere, snerva le forze, ed è cagion di ferite.	40 The effects of inebriation are a stumbling block to the imprudent, diminishing strength and causing wounds.
41 In un convito dove si beve, non riprendere il prossimo, e noi disprezzare nella sua allegria:	41 You should not argue with your neighbor during a banquet of wine. And you should not spurn him in his cheerfulness.
42 Non dirgli parola di ingiuria, e noi pressare col chiedergli il tuo.	42 You should not speak words of reproach to him. And you should not press him with repeated requests.
