1 Giacchè molti si sono provati a stendere la narrazione delle cose in mezzo a noi avvenute,	1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us,
2 secondo ce le riferirono quelli che fin da principio ne furono testimoni oculari e ministri della parola;	2 Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word;
3 è parso bene anche a me, dopo di avere con diligenza investigato tutto dall'origine, di scrivertene per ordine, o eccellentissimo Teofilo:	3 It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus,
4 affinchè tu riconosca la certezza di quelle cose che ti sono state insegnate.	4 That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed.
5 C'era al tempo di Erode, re della Giudea, un sacerdote di nome Zaccaria, della classe d'Abia; e sua moglie, delle figlie di Aronne, si chiamava Elisabetta.	5 There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.
6 Erano ambedue giusti dinanzi a Dio, vivendo irreprensibilmente secondo tutti i precetti e gli ordini del Signore;	6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless.
7 ma non avevano figli, perchè Elisabetta era sterile, e tutti e due avanzati in età.	7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.
8 Or avvenne che mentre Zaccaria esercitava le sue funzioni sacerdotali secondo il suo turno al servizio di Dio	8 And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,
9 secondo l'usanza del sacerdozio, gli toccò in sorte di entrar nel santuario del Signore ad offrire l'incenso;	9 According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.
10 e tutta la folla del popolo stava di fuori a pregare nell'ora dell'incenso.	10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.
11 E gli apparve un Angelo del Signore, ritto alla destra dell'altare dell'incenso.	11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.
12 E Zaccaria, vedutolo, si turbò e fu preso da spavento.	12 And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.
13 Ma l'Angelo gli disse: Non temere, o Zaccaria, perchè è stata esaudita la tua preghiera, e tua moglie Elisabetta ti partorirà un figliolo cui porta nome Giovanni:	13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.
14 e ti sarà d'allegrezza e di giubilo, e molti per la sua nascita si rallegreranno;	14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth.
15 perché egli sarà grande nel cospetto del Signore, non berrà vino nè sicera, e sarà ripieno di Spirito Santo fin dal seno della sua madre;	15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb.
16 e convertirà molto dei figli d'Israele al Signore loro Dio;	16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God.
17 e precederà dinanzi a lui collo spirito e la potenza di Elia, per volgere i cuori dei padri verso dei figli e gl'increduli alla prudenza dei giusti, per preparare al Signore un popolo ben disposto.	17 And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.
18 E Zaccaria disse all'Angelo: Come io riconoscerò questo, essendo io vecchio e mia moglie molto in là cogli anni?	18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.
19 E rispondendo l'Angelo disse: Io sono Gabriele che sto davanti a Dio, e sono stato mandato a parlarti e arrecarti questa buona notizia.	19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and am sent to speak unto thee, and to shew thee these glad tidings.
20 Ed ecco diverrai muto e non potrai parlare fino al giorno in cui si avvereranno queste cose, perché non hai creduto alle mie parole, che si adempiranno nel loro tempo.	20 And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season.
21 Il popolo intanto stava aspettando Zaccaria e si maravigliava che indugiasse tanto nel santuario.	21 And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple.
22 Ma egli, uscito fuori, non potè loro parlare; e compresero che aveva avuta una visione nel santuario. Ed egli andava loro facendo dei cenni, e rimase muto.	22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless.
23 Quando poi furono compiti i giorni del suo ministero se ne tornò a casa.	23 And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house.
24 Or dopo quei giorni, Elisabetta sua moglie, rimase incinta, e per cinque mesi si teneva nascosta dicendo:	24 And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,
25 Così mi ha fatto il Signore quando s'è rivolto a me per togliere la mia ignominia tra gli uomini.	25 Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.
26 Sei mesi dopo l'angelo Gabriele fu mandato da Dio in una città della Galilea dotto. Nazaret,	26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 ad una vergine sposata ad un uomo della casa di David, di nome Giuseppe, e la Vergine si chiamava Maria.	27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
28 Ed entrato da lei l'Angelo, disse: Salute, o piena di grazia; il Signore è teco! Benedetta tu fra lo donne!	28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 Ed essa turbata a queste parole pensava che specie di saluto fosse quello.	29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 E l'Angelo le disse: Non temere, Maria, perchè hai trovato grazia presso Dio;	30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 ecco, tu concepirai nel seno e partorirai un figlio, e gli porrai nome Gesù.	31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 Questi sarà grande e sarà chiamato Figlio dell'Altissimo; e il Signore Dio gli darà il trono di David suo padre;	32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 e regnerà in eterno sulla casa, di Giacobbe; e il suo regno non avrà mai fine.	33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Allora Maria disse alì'Angelo: Come avverrà questo, se io non conosco uomo?	34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 E l'Angelo rispose: Lo Spirito Santo scenderà in te e la potenza dell'Altissimo ti adombrerà, per questo il Santo che nascerà da te sarà chiamato Figlio di Dio.	35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
36 Ed ecco, Elisabetta, tua parente, ha concepito anche lei un figlio nella sua vecchiaia, ed è già nel sesto mese, lei che era detta sterile;	36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.
37 chè niente è impossibile davanti a Dio.	37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.
38 E Maria disse: Ecco l'ancella del Signore: si faccia di me secondo la tua parola. E l'Angelo si partì da lei.	38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
39 Or in quei giorni Maria si mise in viaggio per recarsi frettolosamente in una citta di Giudea sulle montagne,	39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda;
40 ed entrò in casa di Zaccaria e salutò Elisabetta.	40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth.
41 Ed avvenne che appena Elisabetta udì il saluto di Maria, il bambino le balzò nel seno; ed Elisabetta fu ripiena di Spirito Santo;	41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:
42 ed esclamò ad alta voce: Benedetta tu fra le donne e benedetto il frutto del tuo seno.	42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.
43 E d'onde mi è dato che venga a me la madre del mio Signore?	43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
44 Ecco, infatti, appena il suono del tuo saluto mi è giunto all'orecchio, il bambino m'è balzato pel giubilo nel seno.	44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy.
45 E te beata che hai creduto, perchè s'adempiranno le cose a te predette dal Signore.	45 And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord.
46 E Maria disse: L'anima mia glorifica il Signore;	46 And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord,
47 ed il mio spirito esulta in Dio, mio Salvatore;	47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
48 e perchè egli ha rivolto lo sguardo alla bassezza della sua serva; ecco, da questo punto tutte le generazioni mi chiameranno beala:	48 For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
49 perchè grandi cose mi ha fatto colui che è potente. Il suo nome è santo;	49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.
50 la sua misericordia si effonde di generazione in generazione sopra coloro che lo temono.	50 And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation.
51 Ha operato prodigi col suo braccio, ha disperso i superbi nei disegni del loro cuore.	51 He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 Ha rovesciati dal trono i potenti ed esaltato gli umili.	52 He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree.
53 Ha riempiti di beni gli affamati, ha rimandati a mani vuote i ricchi.	53 He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away.
54 Ha soccorso Israele suo servo, ricordandosi della sua misericordia;	54 He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy;
55 come parlò ai padri nostri, ad Àbramo ed alla sua discendenza per tutti i secoli.	55 As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever.
56 E Maria si trattenne con Elisabetta circa tre mesi, e se ne ritornò a casa sua.	56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house.
57 Or compiutosi per Elisabetta il tempo di partorire diede alla luce un figlio.	57 Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
58 E i suoi vicini ed i parenti, avendo udito come il Signore aveva manifestato la sua misericordia verso di lei, se ne congratulavan con essa.	58 And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
59 Ed avvenne che l'ottavo giorno vennero a circoncidere il bambino e lo chiamavan Zaccaria, dal nome di suo padre.	59 And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
60 Ma la madre s'opponeva dicendo: No, davvero: deve chiamarsi Giovanni.	60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
61 E le replicarono contro: non v'è alcuno della tua parentela che porti questo nome.	61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
62 Ed accennavano al padre come volesse chiamarlo.	62 And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
63 Ed egli, chiesta una tavoletta, vi scrisse: Il suo nome è Giovanni. E tutti restaron maravigliati.	63 And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
64 Ed in quell'istante la sua bocca s'aprì, e la sua lingua si sciolse, e parlò, benedicendo Dio.	64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
65 Tutti i loro vicini furon presi da timore, e per tutte le montagne di Giudea eran divulgate tutte queste cose,	65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
66 e quanti le udivano le serbavano nel cuore e dicevano: Chi sarà mai questo bambino? E la mano del Signore era infatti con lui.	66 And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 E Zaccaria, suo padre, fu ripieno di Spirito Santo, e profetò, dicendo:	67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
68 Benedetto il Signore, Dio d'Israele, perchè ha visitato e redento il suo popolo,	68 Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
69 suscitandoci un potente Salvatore nella casa di David suo servo.	69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
70 Così promise per bocca dei santi profeti, fin dai tempi antichi:	70 As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
71 di liberarci dai nostri nemici e dalle mani di quanti ci odiano,	71 That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
72 per esercitare la sua misericordia verso i nostri padri e mostrarsi memore della sua santa alleanza.	72 To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
73 Questo è il giuramento che fece ad Abramo nostro padre: Di concederci	73 The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
74 che senza timore, liberi dalle mani dei nostri nemici, noi serviamo a lui,	74 That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
75 con santità e giustizia, nel suo cospetto per tutta la nostra vita.	75 In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
76 É tu, bambino, sarai chiamato profeta dell'Altissimo, perchè andrai davanti al Signore, a preparargli le vie,	76 And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
77 a dar al suo popolo la scienza della salute per la remissione dei loro peccati:	77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
78 in grazia della tenera misericordia del nostro Dio, per la quale l'oriente ci ha visitati dall'alto,	78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
79 per illuminare coloro che giacciono nelle tenebre e nelhombra di morte, per guidare i nostri passi nella via della pace.	79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
80 Il bambino intanto cresceva e si fortificava in spirito e stava nei deserti fino al tempo della sua manifestazione ad Israele.	80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
