| 1 - Fatevi dunque imitatori di Dio, come figli bene amati, | 1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. |
| 2 e vivete amandovi come anche Cristo amò noi, e diede se stesso per noi, oblazione e sacrificio a Dio, profumo di soave odore. | 2 And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. |
| 3 Fornicazione poi e qualsiasi impudicizia o avidità di possedere, non si nominino neppure tra voi, come conviene ai santi, | 3 But fornication and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is fitting among saints. |
| 4 e così non disoneste parole, o buffonerie, o scurrilità che non convengono, ma piuttosto azioni di grazie. | 4 Let there be no filthiness, nor silly talk, nor levity, which are not fitting; but instead let there be thanksgiving. |
| 5 Poichè questo dovete tenere a mente, che ogni adultero o impudico o avaro, che vuol dire idolatra, non ha eredità nel regno di Cristo e di Dio. | 5 Be sure of this, that no fornicator or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. |
| 6 Niuno v'inganni con vuoti discorsi, poichè per tali cose viene l'ira di Dio sui figli ribelli. | 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. |
| 7 Non fatevi dunque consoci di costoro, | 7 Therefore do not associate with them, |
| 8 poichè una volta eravate tenebre ma ora siete luce nel Signore; e come figli della luce dovete vivere, | 8 for once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as children of light |
| 9 giacchè il frutto della luce è in ogni bontà e giustizia e verità, | 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), |
| 10 esaminando quel che è accetto al Signore; | 10 and try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. |
| 11 e non prendete parte alle opere infeconde delle tenebre, ma anzi riprendetele, | 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. |
| 12 perchè quel che si fa in segreto, è turpe anche il dirlo, | 12 For it is a shame even to speak of the things that they do in secret; |
| 13 e le cose condannate son tutte messe in chiaro dalla luce, poichè tutto quello che è manifestato è luce. | 13 but when anything is exposed by the light it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. |
| 14 Onde dice: «Risvegliati, o tu che dormi, e risorgi dai morti» e Cristo ti darà luce. | 14 Therefore it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light." |
| 15 Perciò state bene attenti a come vi portate; non da insipienti, | 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, |
| 16 ma da saggi; valendovi del tempo opportuno, perchè i giorni son cattivi. | 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. |
| 17 Perciò non siate imprudenti, ma cercate di capire qual è la volontà di Dio. | 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. |
| 18 Nè inebriatevi di vino, nel che vi è la dissolutezza, ma siate ripieni dello Spirito Santo, | 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, |
| 19 trattenendovi con salmi, inni, e canti spirituali, cantando e salmodiando di cuore al Signore, | 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, |
| 20 rendendo sempre grazie per tutto, nel nome del Signor nostro Gesù Cristo, a Dio Padre, | 20 always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. |
| 21 sottomettendovi gli uni agli altri nel timore di Cristo. | 21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. |
| 22 Le donne siano soggette ai loro mariti, come al Signore, | 22 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord. |
| 23 perchè l'uomo è capo della donna come anche Cristo è capo della Chiesa, egli il salvatore del corpo di lei; | 23 For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. |
| 24 or come la Chiesa sta soggetta a Cristo, così anche le donne ai mariti, in tutto. | 24 As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands. |
| 25 E voi, o mariti, amate le vostre mogli, così come Cristo amò la Chiesa e diè se stesso per lei | 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, |
| 26 nel fine di santificarla, purificandola col lavacro dell'acqua mediante la parola di vita, | 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, |
| 27 per far comparire egli stesso davanti a sè gloriosa la Chiesa, affinchè sia senza macchia, senza ruga o altra cosa siffatta, ma anzi santa e immacolata. | 27 that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. |
| 28 Così anche i mariti devono amare le loro mogli come i propri corpi; chi ama sua moglie ama se stesso; | 28 Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. |
| 29 giacchè nessuno ha odiato mai la sua carne, ma la nutre e la circonda di cure come Cristo fa alla Chiesa, | 29 For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, |
| 30 giacchè noi siamo membra del corpo di lui; | 30 because we are members of his body. |
| 31 per questo abbandonerà l'uomo suo padre e sua madre e s'unirà strettamente colla moglie sua e saranno due in una carne sola. | 31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." |
| 32 Grande è questo sacramento; - io dico a riguardo di Cristo e della Chiesa. - | 32 This mystery is a profound one, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church; |
| 33 Così dunque ciascun di voi ami la propria moglie così come se stesso, e la donna rispetti l'uomo. | 33 however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband. |
