BIBBIA RICCIOTTI	NEW JERUSALEM
1 - Come all'estate la neve, come alla mèsse la pioggia, così allo stolto la gloria non sta bene.	1 Snow no more befits the summer, nor rain the harvest-time, than honours befit a fool.
2 Come uccello che passa via, come passero che se ne va, così la maledizione scagliata senza motivo, sorvolerà su chiunque fu detta.	2 As the sparrow escapes, and the swal ow flies away, so the undeserved curse will never hit its mark.
3 La sferza al cavallo, la cavezza all'asino, e al dosso degli stolti, il bastone.	3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and for the backs of fools, a stick.
4 Non risponder allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, affinchè non diventi par suo anche tu.	4 Do not answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear you grow like him yourself.
5 Rispondi allo stolto secondo la sua stoltezza, affinchè non si creda saggio ai suoi occhi.	5 Answer a fool in the terms of his fol y for fear he imagine himself wise.
6 Resta a piè zoppo e col male in corpochi manda commissioni per mezzo d'uno stolto.	6 He wounds himself, he takes violence for his drink, who sends a message by a fool.
7 Come a uno zoppo non serve aver belli gli stinchi, così non serve il proverbio in bocca agli stolti.	7 Unreliable as the legs of the lame, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
8 Come chi getta sassi alle macerie, così chi dà lode allo stolto.	8 As wel tie the stone to the sling as pay honour to a fool.
9 Come uno spino se in mano a un ubriaco spuntasse, così il proverbio in bocca agli stolti.	9 A thorn branch in a drunkard's hand, such is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 La sentenza tronca le litie chi impone il silenzio allo stolto acqueta gli sdegni.	10 An archer wounding everyone, such is he who hires the passing fool and drunkard.
11 Come il cane che ritorna al vomito, così lo stolto che ricasca nella sua stoltezza.	11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool reverts to his fol y.
12 Hai visto un uomo sapiente ai suoi propri occhi? c'è da aspettarsi più da uno stolto che da costui.	12 You see someone who thinks himself wise? More to be hoped for from a fool than from him!
13 Dice il pigro: «Di fuori c'è il leone, c'è la pantera per istrada».	13 'A wild beast on the road!' says the idler, 'a lion in the streets!'
14 Come la porta si gira sui propri cardinicosì il pigro nel proprio letto.	14 The door turns on its hinges, the idler on his bed.
15 Il pigro mette la mano sotto l'ascella, e a stento la ritira per portarsela alla bocca.	15 Into the dish the idler dips his hand, but is too tired to bring it back to his mouth.
16 Ai suoi occhi lo stolto è più sapientedi sette uomini che dànno responsi assennati.	16 The idler thinks himself wiser than seven people who answer with discretion.
17 Come chi afferra un cane per gli orecchi, così il passante impronto che s'immischia nelle questioni altrui.	17 He takes a stray dog by the ears, who meddles in someone else's quarrel.
18 Come è colpevole chi lancia dardi e giavellotti micidiali,	18 Like a madman hurling firebrands, arrows and death,
19 così chi dolosamente nuoce all'amico, e preso in fallo dice: «Lo feci per celia».	19 so is anyone who lies to a companion and then says, 'Aren't I amusing?'
20 Col finir delle legna il fuoco si spegne, e levato di mezzo il detrattore, si sopiscono le contese.	20 No wood, and the fire goes out; no slanderer, and quarrel ing dies down.
21 Il carbone per la brace, la legna pel fuoco e l'accattabrighe per attizzar le risse.	21 Charcoal for live embers, wood for fire, and the quarrelsome for kindling strife.
22 Le parole del maldicente paiono cose delle più lievi, ma s'insinuano sino al fondo delle viscere.	22 The words of a slanderer are tasty morsels that go right down into the bel y.
23 Come chi vuole inverniciare un vaso di terracotta con argentone, così chi unisce labbra riboccanti d'affetto a tristo cuore.	23 Base silver-plate on top of clay: such are fervent lips and a wicked heart.
24 Dal suo parlare si conosce il nemico, quando in cuor suo ha progettato l'inganno.	24 Whoever hates may hide it in speech, but deep within lies treachery;
25 Quando fa la voce sommessa non credergli, poichè sette scelleratezze sono nel suo cuore.	25 do not trust such a person's pretty speeches, since in the heart lurk seven abominations.
26 Chi nasconde dolosamente il suo odio, vedrà la sua malizia svelata nell'assemblea.	26 Hatred may disguise itself with guile, to reveal its wickedness later in the assembly.
27 Chi scava la fossa ci casca dentro, e la pietra ritorna su chi l'ha rotata.	27 Whoever digs a pit fal s into it, the stone comes back on him that rol s it.
28 La lingua bugiarda non ama la schiettezza e la bocca adulatrice prepara i precipizi.	28 The lying tongue hates its victims, the wheedling mouth causes ruin.
